I’m old enough to remember back in 1978 when NFL Films dubbed the Cowboys “America’s Team”. Tom Landry hated it, but Tex Schramm loved it. It was accurate then- the Cowboys were clearly the most popular football team in America.

But 43 years later, IMO, it’s not only a tired moniker, I’m not sure it’s still accurate. But that led me to think about some other tired and overused quotes that are commonly said about the Dallas Cowboy and sports in general that are either used too often or just flat goofy.

Here are a few I came up with in no particular order of importance:
  • “America’s Team”
  • “War Daddy”
  • “Cover corner”
  • “Possession receiver”
  • “Who’s going to step up?” (When an injury happens to an important player)
  • “_____ is in the best shape of his life.” (Said every year about some player- true or not)
  • “_____ is having a great camp.” (Said every year about some spare who will either not make the team or never play much)
  • “Hot Boyz” (yuck)
So what are some other tired old cliches we hear too often? Seems like every offseason is full of old cliches.
What say you?

There are few measurable that show Dallas is "America's Team".

First is road attendance, Dallas always leads and their tickets are the pricest to acquire.

Second is TV ratings. Dallas once again leads in this category. The network executive fight over Dallas games. After they have been distributed they fight over the rest of the schedule.

Third is social media. Dallas is 1st in Twitter and Facebook followers. Combined Dallas dwarfs #2 Pittsburgh.

The numbers that measure audience all say that Dallas "is absolutely, positively America's Team". And number two is not even close.

Just because you and others believe this moniker has past, it is actually as true as it ever has been.

"You have to be able to run and stop the run."

(Actually, in this millennium, you have to be able to pass and stop the pass. But don't let me distract you from that new episode of Family Ties.)

Back in the 70's:

"Cowboy RB" stopped for only a three yard gain!........"Opponent RB" rambles for an impressive three yard gain!

...Tony Romo after a loss, "It is, what it is". I cant even count how many times he used that line after a loss.

Nah. Never has a term been more appropriate than the word retread when it comes to sports. Particularly in the NFL when it comes to coaching and QBs.
