People like us have seen pro football evolve from a real sport built on the concept of the best man wins to a Hollywood Extravaganza and everyone gets a trophy mentality and with one primary theme in mind, make more money

Truth is coach it's not you, it is just not as fun as it used to be thanks to way too many rules, all the rules that are in place now most of them the refs can't even figure out anymore, some are very good and needed rules "protect against concussions" but others are not, also and most importantly the NFL has given referees too much power over the game with very little transparency. There needs to be some changes and there will be but it will never be the organization it once was. there will be many that will be fine with the new NFL.
It is more than disenchantment with the Jones stewadrship of the Cowboys, "this is not my NFL".

Between rule changes to emphasize scoring and offense, officiating, politization, commercials, etc, etc. this no longer the NFL I grew up watching and loving.

Evolution is I expected, but the NFL is now the NBA... which I no longer watch.

I think he knows how much he alienated a lot of the fans...but he doesn't care. Why? Because of the casual fans that attend anyway...and the corporations that buy seats and hand them out to employees. And the former fans who keep their season tickets and sell their seats to opposing team fans. Jerry's making his money, why should he care if he alienates fans?
He has sent the message repeatedly, this is mine.

I'm very much a casual watcher now. A lot of outside stuff has found it's way into football, gossip BS taking center stage, etc. There's also just so much other forms of competing entertainment at my fingertips now that the NFL has fallen to the wayside. I forgot the draft was even nearing until I saw the countdown a couple days ago. The major start to me turning away from the NFL was the neutering of defenses to have QBs shine more. Just not my thing. I prefer the more physical football and ground and pound, which doesn't seem to be coming back. 1999-2006 seemed to be the real sweet spot in balancing ground and pound football and passing. After 2007, it rapidly began to go towards passing.

I agree with that, it does not resemble the game I grew up with and takes a hell of a lot longer to watch. I can remember when the games would end at 2:45 and they'd have to fill.

The problem with that is that there is still only the 60 minutes of action in the games. The rest is either commercials or waiting for reviews.

Ever since FA started the game has evolved and the last 10 years has probably been the worst from the pro bowl being a complete joke to the SB is nothing more than. A circus riddled with advertisement. The rules have changed bigtime to protect offense. I don't like seeing players injured but big hits used to be part of the game. Taunting used to be fun to see. We never used to hear about salaries or contracts. Too much INFO fans don't need to know.

Another well written response.

And that's what makes it so frustrating when some fans dog on you for simply wanting to assess and evaluate the team.
Thanks for the kind words.
It just makes me sad what this team has become.
It seems to be more geared to entertainment than building a winning football team.

I can't leave the NFL, don't know if it's possible. Definitely don't like many of the things they have done.

I have left the NBA. It has definitely become completely unwatchable. However, for the first time in years I tuned in to watch Milwaukee win it a few times. They are more of an old school team, and it was actually enjoyable.

You get no sympathy from millennial Cowboys fans like myself, I'll tell you that much.

At least you've experienced this franchise when it was once great. All I know is pain. The Cowboys haven't won squat since I was literally in kindergarten, and nothing this franchise is doing/has done gives me any hope that we are trending in the right direction.

I just wish the madness would end.

Remember back in the 80's when there were always events somewhere in D/FW where a player would make an appearance at some random place to sign autographs for several hours? Does that even happen anymore?

Things like that secured a lot of young fan loyalty.
In the early 70s, I once saw and met the great Jethro Pugh at my little brother’s Pee Wee football banquet. He spoke for about 10 min on the importance of being a good teammate and listening to your coaches. Then patiently met dozens of kids and posed for photos.

In 1989, I met Tom Landry and he signed a copy of his autobiography at a book signing. The line to get his signature stretched about a city block. He was a true hero.

When we watched the Cowboys in those days those guys were heroes. I know times have changed and there are still many really good people who play and work for the Cowboys. But when the face of the team acts more like the Joker than Batman, it’s hard to care as much.

The Cowboys, and the NFL as a whole, are a part of my life due to habit more than anything, at this point.

It's just reality TV intended to draw an audience to which products can be sold, and money taken from. Claiming a team as mine is no different than claiming a contestant on Survivor/AGT/ American Idol, as mine.

I'm surprised pro sports has remained as popular as ever. I feel dirtier and dirtier every passing year, for paying attention.

Before you go saying adios, seeya wouldn't want to beya or something else along those lines, hear me out.

I have been wondering if my loss of passion for the Cowboys is just the aging process or is there something else causing that and I think I am on to it. I do not have that proprietary attachment to the Cowboys I once had.

When I became a fan, they were my team. Really MY team, I felt more than just a fan, they were mine. I had a special relationship with them and almost felt I knew them.

No owner sends the message louder or clearer that this is his team than this one. He even went so far to tell the fans if you don't like it, plop down 140M of your own money. And since then, it's only gotten worse.

Not only do he and his son spend their time telling us that this is their team but they insult my fantelligence by trying to sell their way is the way. No other owner in sports history has spent more time trying to sell lemonade and eventually it becomes an insult. Do they really think I am that stupid? Just because I am a fan?

The bragging and boastfulness of the Joneses negates any "this is my team" thinking. It's all about them.

Tex Schramm was a master marketer and he had this knack for making the Cowboy accomplishments inclusive for the fans. I can still recall the pc when he established the largest radio network in NFL history and was responsible for establishing the Dallas Cowboys as Mexico's team, as well as New Mexico and Arizona. He made it about us, the fans. He said we were the reason that happened. It was look what we did.

This detached feeling I have when I watch this team play has become the norm so it doesn't bother me as much but when I watch them play, I know I am watching someone else's team play, not mine.

I realize there is no logic or rationale attached to being a fan but that's what has happened to me, I am now a fan because I've been a fan for so long. If not for the history, I would not choose this team today.

The problem is that I do not think I will ever get that feeling back again. That this is MY team feeling. And that makes me sad because one should never outgrow their passion.

This is not a complaint thread or a bash the owner one as I do not think he did this intentionally, it just happened because he let his ego take over. And a lot of what he's been doing is trying to chase the Jimmy Johnson ghost away but along the way he took my pride of ownership of my team away from me.

it is still my favorite NFL team but it is not MY team.
Football isn’t the same anymore. And my love for the game has changed. My love for the team is the same. I want my team to win. But I always wait to cheer when we score. Been that way since the Dez catch no catch. As I age there is more important things than football. But when I sit down I want to see my team win. I do a lot more yelling at the tv now a days during games..

I miss the days of the AFL for the more wide open games and the NFL for the ground and pound 13-10 scores.

The video game crowd, fantasy and immediate payoff people much prefer this game today because of the required action.

Younger fans really don't have anything to compare today's game to but if they'd ever sat there glued to the screen because if you looked away you missed it, they might feel different. No replays and every play seemed to matter more because this could be the one. I'd hold my water until a break because I was afraid of missing something.

Now, I watch and don't time bathroom trips or drink exchanges with the game. I won't miss anything.

Instead of fans being witnesses to the game, it was changed to accommodate us and our time management. In their efforts to get more people to like the game, they passed over those of us who loved it. Watching a game back then was more like an event at home.

u said it better then i ever could!

the really thing that frustrate me is that there is no solution. if it is a crappy gm or coach or qb then u can just wait for them to be replaced and then have new hope!

not jerry and stephen though. and honistly it is looking like stephen will be worse then jerry!

Yep, maybe it was just good marketing, so much less information available back then or simply being a child but I felt like the players wanted to win for the fans. For the fans to be proud of them.

This is exactly correct. The problems you list exist in every team to some degree but still there are other teams that seem to be trying to pursue excellence and have a real disdain for failure. I don't see that here. I can't blame other fan bases for making fun of this organization.

That “this is my team” mentality from JJ is nauseating. The best owners of any pro team realize that while they own it and can benefit monetarily from it, a team also belongs to the community and fans who support it. The owner is NOT the sole beneficiary.

The best owners don’t make it all about themselves. They make it all about everyone who is and has been a part of its success and history. Great owners never become the face and centerpiece of the franchise because that is fundamentally a misunderstanding of their role and responsibility.

It's simply hard not to laugh. Look at Ratliff. We begged and begged Jerry to get a NT and put him at 3-4DE where he fit. And then, the BALT game. Ratliff gets washed out in two consecutive drives culminating in two 70 or so yard runs. That simply does not happen w/ a real NT in the game. We traded a couple of sacks from the NT position for having a weak middle of the D. And so obvious.

You would think so. But he is so egotistical that he can win it all his way despite 25 years of failure.
Well, that's just sad.
Because he ain't winning squat his way.
It is obvious, even to the casual fan that this front office structure is flawed, and he does not have the knowledge or skillset to be a successful GM.
There's 27 years of proof.
