They had no choice but to go with the rookie Steele.
Collins was out for the year with the hip,.. and then converted OG Brandon Knight had to fill in when Tyron and Cam Irving had their bouts with injuries.
Dunno on that.

Knight was a swing tackle type at that point and played reasonably well at LT in 2019. I remember being shocked he didn't get the call over Steele.

Moot by now though sir, and it sounds like we are going young on the back end of the OL. I didn't agree a couple of days ago, now I do.

Cutting one of thes guys will be necessary but painful.

They mentioned how smart Empey is on the draft show. They said he really impressed in the area of intelligence.

I know, my thinking is, it's Steele and Ball plays RT. Wal will be more of the developmental guy this yr.

Seems like that's sort of the intent right now. They pretty much said Ball is going to play the right side and Waletzko the left. If we're focusing Ball on right tackle, it might be because we want to at least have a fallback if Steele fails and also with the idea that if Tyron misses time, we can shift Steele to that side. I agree that we're not likely counting on Waletzko for much this year, and I don't think we would want to have to move Tyler Smith as a rookie to left tackle to cover if Tyron Smith misses games. That's asking a lot of a rookie who had penalty problems.

Tyler doesn't need to be overloaded, have him focus on playing Guard this yr.

Could definitely see one of the UDFA centers making the team as the 10th lineman. It might be tight because of numbers at other positions, but I'm not sure Biadasz is viewed any differently than Williams was as far as the long term goes. He's got two more years and then we might let him walk. No reason not to keep someone who might can replace him if the roster numbers work. Of course, I'm not counting out Farniok, but I think it's still Biadasz's job to lose.

- I could only guess-assume the coaches thought LT was thought too much a bigger responsibility for rookie Steele, who also didn't have an offseason program,
no mini camps, ..and i believe NFL canceled preseason per CoVid issues, so there just wasn't much preparation work for Steele at that time.

- Knight at least had a NFL year under his belt with playing some as a rookie in 2019, including one start at RT vs Jets.

* * Alert: If we go thru another yet season (vast rash injuries aside) with problems and turmoil among the OL unit .. Joe Philibin is outta here !
Maybe just me, but i'm just not sold on this Packer OL zone style philosophy for this kind of player personnel.

.- And further more, i'll be willing to bet the Jones will be vying (insisting?) to return to the Columbo man block mauling style again and pursuing such an new OL coach.
with that kind of emphasis. (ala Mike Munchak ? Columbo) ..and of course no McCarthy either.

- If power and mauling is what rookie Tyler Smith seems best suited for, i'd prefer to have the OL scheme that best suits his skill set... JMHO.

I think 10 is probably the number. Starters (as of now) :
LT Tyron Smith
LG Tyler Smith
C Biadasz */Linderbaum
RG Martin
RT Steele */Ball

Back ups :
Swing T Ball, Waletzko
C/G-Farniok, Linderbaum, McGovern

I think there are going to be 3 major battles on the O-line this year in camp, @ RT, swing T and C. IMO, they have some good players and depth there.
*Biadasz has some real competition this year with Farniok, Linderbaum and Empey on the roster. I could see him losing that job to Linderbaum and becoming the primary C back up or even trade bait if they think Farniok or Empey is good enough.
* I also think Steele is gonna have to fight to keep his job from Ball. I think Waletzko has a good shot to be a player, but needs time to develop. He and the loser at RT will battle for the swing T spot. But I do think they will try to keep all of them on the 53 because they know Tyron probably won't make it all year.

They're thin at OG behind Martin and Smith. God forbid Martin goes down for a few games. If we lose one of those 2 we could be in trouble with McGovern being the primary back up. But I assume that they feel either of the back up centers can fill in if need be. I really hope they're right.

- We’re adding Tyler and putting faith in him in a full time starting OG role, despite inexperience – we’re relying heavily upon incumbents Tyron and Martin to
remain at a high level, even though one future HOF'er will not manage to stay healthy,.. ..but how do the other Tyler (Biadz) and Steele operate and perform ?

- The big key to handling the more competitive 3-4 defensive schemes is controlling the 3-4 NT

- How would we know Ferguson is a better blocker than Schultz, when he hasn’t yet to take a single game snap in the NFL ?

- Actually it seems like the Cowboys have been out-physical “ every year, even with different DC’s ..Marinelli,.. Nolan,.. even Quinn.
So what is gonna change now ? An 5th round rookie 1 tech ?

- And when will we finally have a defense that is dominant vs the run ?
