Let's not get carried away. He is an okay player who will make a play occasionally, but I don't think he starts. I am pretty sure he will be a backup to someone and get limited snaps this season. But if the choice is between Hill and Watkins, I would take Hill.

However, barring injury I think the Cowboys are going to have to cut a decent DT or 2 before the season starts.

This year, we've finally gotten guys with, at the very least, potential to play, so now we have to let go of guys who are still developing their potential, and release players we would not usually let go.

It's a nice problem to have.

He can only play well if he can play and has the opportunity to play.

With Hill, he's done fairly well with the reps he's gotten. He just hasn't been healthy a lot of the time.

He hasn’t done crap in three seasons. He’s been referred to in the same breath as Taco. This summer he’s had a good camp we’ll see how it goes from here. He obviously knows this is his last shot with the team. A good camp and a nice preseason game isn’t going to change my opinion of him until he shows up in the regular season.

Hill had a huge play and other than that played ok in last nights preseason game against backups. Hopefully he has turned a corner and will be a good player for us this year if he makes the 53 (and I now think he will). But let’s not pretend he all of a sudden has become a great player or something. He has a half sack to his resume in his entire career. Hopefully he keeps improving and can play well enough to help us as a rotation player this year

Same here.

It's like the OP said.

Signs.

I hate to be the guy to point out master of the obvious type stuff, but that's what we need in the preseason: signs that a player can actually contribute to the team for the reasons you drafted him if coaching, conditioning can address X,Y,Z.

Sometimes, you get a Micah Parsons, and they're ready to rock and roll day 1. Sometimes, players have to go through development and injuries before they hit the ground running.

So far, I'd say the jury is still out on Trysten Hill. But I think he makes the team based on the signs he's shown.
DLaw was a question if he’d be on the team after suspensions and injuries before 2017

As we discussed after the draft, it is going to be difficult cutting down the DL this season. Believe Hill will be on the final roster, but Basham/Watkins/Ridgeway all could be on the chopping block. Wonder if they can find a trade partner to land a swing tackle.

we need pass rushers ... we need interior pass rushers ... we need nickel interior pass rushers ... at this point, i'm not overly concerned about Hill fulfilling a second round pick.
we need his ability to get to the passer, ..per nickel, per rotation, per role.
And he just may be the best DT pass rusher we have.

Circumstances have stalled his ability to impact the field. Even going into his 4th year, he's still a developing player, some were Rod Marinelli,
some have been Trysten's own immaturity and discipline issues, and a big one has been major injury, per ACL in 2020, to which he wasn't a present until mid season 2021.
Now he's showing every sign that he's recovered from that ACL.

He's been a stand out at camp and preseason, showing high motor, great agility and lateral movement, and he's not an undersized 3 tech at 310 pounds.

Good luck on finding a player for player trade for a quality backup OT, something we should've addressed immediately in FA off season,
One experienced quality vet backup (ala Cameron Irvin) and one young project. (Josh Ball) .
Now it's looking every so much we'll be trading late round conditional picks for a lower tier vet tackle.

Sometimes they grow up, Hill is 24 now, so no longer can play the card of super green, its time to man up and maybe if we are lucky Cowboy fans we get to
watch that transition take place, not just with Hill, but Hill being a Cog in the Wheel, part of the upward movement of a young DL.
I remember Jimmy using that term, "Cog in the Wheel" when speaking of Russel Maryland back in the day.
Understand that meaning of the term and it works when other young pups like Bohanna and Gallimore start falling into the program.
Buying in is the better word to use, this defense has a leader now in Parsons, and Q has secured his ring leader, and when you have that type of
total alpha athlete that can dominate like Parsons it makes everyone step up their game, special players that elevate everyone around them.

Definitely showing more motor than we've seen from him.

Actually motor is the one thing we've always seen in him. It was the knowledge of how to play with leverage and turned his physical gifts into plays on the field that were missing. Along with the ability to control his emotions and not let some dipweed throw him off his game with talk or a couple of cheap shots.

Right there with you. Since his second year Hill has always flashed when given time and not injured. But people get into those preconceived notions when they hear something they don't like (or just like to whine and rage about) and then become unmovable objects even with evidence to the contrary. Happens around here a time or two.
I think I'm guilty of this. I didn't like what I heard about Hill coming out of college. He seemed to show a lot of signs that all of those things were true. It's hard to break away from that bias once it sets in.

But I've been encouraged by his play.

What about using Trysten Hill as a trade chip for a swing Tackle on offense? He’s improved enough to draw interest and he’s in the last year of his contract. I think it’s worth exploring.

Nope. I'm not interested.

1) i don't think we have a good history of trading player for player.
2) good interior pass rushers are too difficult to find and we need the depth per injury preparation
3) Hill may actually be our best pass rushing DT
3) we may be in better position to get a comp pick for him if another decides to overpay for him when he's a FA.
4) if anything, we're trading a late round conditional pick for an average swing guy, or an incentive laden 1 year deal with a high durability risk,
aging vet (Eric Fisher, Bulaga? ) that's willing to be a backup swing.

I don’t think there’s much chance of this FO making a player for player trade. I honestly believe they are somewhat paranoid about doing them because of their trade history and their seeming lack of value placed on lineman on either side of the ball. The only kind of trades they seem to be interested in are:
  1. Trading a first round pick (or several) for a WR.
  2. Trading a late round pick for a DL.
Without looking it up, I can’t remember the last trade the Cowboys FO made that didn’t involve a WR or a DL. Their trades only seem to involve a position they highly value (WR) or don’t value much at all (OL and DL).

Its put up or shut up time and he knows it. He will make the team b/c we have no depth on the DL. If he plays poorly, this will likely be his final season in the NFL. He's been a bust so far.

Stock Up: Trysten Hill
There have certainly been questions about Trysten Hill and whether or not he would make it to his fourth season with the Cowboys. The interior of the defensive line is a crowded room but Trysten has managed to stick around this long which is notable.

Turnovers and splash plays matter in the preseason and Hill not only had one but he hit the trifecta!

On bubble, Cowboys DT Trysten Hill pulls of strip sack, fumble recovery with pure effort

Just curious, who said his roster spot was ever in jeopardy other than some media guys? Look at how Jerry/Stephen has handled the top three draft picks that didn't do so well in the past. They play out their rookie deal w/o an extension/offer but are rarely released or cut. My point, Trysten was playing well last season before his injury. This is a contract year for him, so I'm not sure he was ever on the bubble.

I'm seeing Dan Quinn developing a monster of a defensive front 7. If the light comes on for Hill and he lives up to his potential, this pass rush is going to be a force to be reckoned with. I'm excited to see what these guys can do this season!
