I think he made that decision after Gregory asked him to take out the clause when Denver matched the money Dallas was willing to throw at him. Jones is good at telling the story in whatever way casts him in the best light.
That is not how the Cowboys have EVER worked under Jerry.
He tells players/Agents in free agency to go get the best deal and give him a chance to match. Denver knows this as well and thus bid up the price to a point they were confident Dallas wouldn't match.
I don't know if ever agreed to match every cent of the deal or said it earlier in negotiations.
But one of two things happened:
1. Dallas got lucky that Randy and his agent were so concerned with the same clause he had in his prior two deals they refused a dollar-for-dollar deal.
2. Dallas declined to match even after saying we'll match the best deal you get. --which is likely what really made Randy so mad and is what Jerry seems to be saying.
Either way it is all dead air and white noise now as Dallas absolutely should be grateful they did not sign that deal.
Fowler, Sam Williams have been great, cheap additions and Dorance Armstrong has been a very solid DE at 5 years younger and much cheaper.
