I would've declined it, but it ended up being 2nd and goal from the 11 so the guy paid to make the decision was vindicated in that instance.

Lots of complaining about nothing going on here today: "Is Swaim an every down TE?" No, none of them are, but that's the roster. Now we're second guessing a decision that did not backfire.

..well, I suppose the logic will be, the more distant the better. I too would have take the 4 yd loss. They say football is a game of inches.

Depends on the O you face, the play of your defense, the score at the time, the time on the clock, and home or away. Most tems you decline. Buffalo, Cleveland, NYG, Seattle, and a few others you accept.

What's the consensus here on what happened in the game? 1st and goal at the 3, we tackle Barkley for a 6 yard loss, but there is a holding call.

In my mind I immediately thought "decline". To me 4 yards was not worth an extra down when you're that close to the goal. I was not the least bit shocked the Garrett accepted it, because well its Garrett..but maybe I'm wrong.

What's the consensus here?

(apologies if there is another thread on this - couldn't find it)

Giving them 4 yards and another down was just plain stupid. The Garrett horror show roles on.

It was obvious, even Al Michaels said we should decline. Just another Garrettism..

.

My friend and I were laughing during that part of the game. Garrett has no business coaching in the NFL.

Another thing I thought about watching this take place.....

Barkley sat the 1st and 13 down out for a break. If you see him go off the field I'd take 2nd and 9 with no Barkley anyday. That gives them just one more shot with him in on 3rd down. Instead he got a breather and was back in there for 2 downs from the 11.

It's small decisions like that that Garrett will have to clean up. Decision making is not based purely on intellect. But one bad decision could cost you a play off appearance, or a Super Bowl title.

the sad thing is that the right decision was obvious to most of us immediately.
and we r shocked that garrett made the wrong decision as it happens.
it is like omg what is garrett doing, then it becomes i cannot believe cowboys cannot even get this simple decision right.

Frequent brain dead, you don't expect him to change. He will make wrong decisions all the time in those kind of situations.

I remember we had a sack in this game for like a loss of 6.....there was also a penalty for holding on NYG on the play.

The refs had to walk over to Garrett who had to think about that one too before ultimately declining.

Very concerning when the head coach can't make optimal decisions to help put the team in position to win. But this shouldn't surprise anyone. It's Garrett.

Concensus, JG needs another assistant to do his job for him because he is incompetent.
Could probably hire a teenager that plays a lot of Madden to help with game management consultation.

Depends on your defense. In this case i imagine the numbers aren't heavily skewed either way.

You are correct. Declining the penalty would have been better -- but not by much. First-and-goal from the 13 has an Expected Points of 4.53, while it's only 4.38 on second-and-goal from the 9. That's not much of a difference (0.15 points). A second-and-goal from the 8 is 4.57 Expected Points, so taking the penalty would have been better if Barkley had been tackled for only a 5-yard loss. But again, the difference would have been very small.

Borderline call either way. Not worth of a thread. Also the giants weren't averaging 4 yards per play at midfield. What makes people think they'd get 4 on a condensed field?

Of all the things to complain about...
