Business contract with defined penalties for failure to perform. Word and honor have nothing to do with it.

The Cowboys, and fans, have been open about wanting to chew Zeke up and spit him out. Throw his broken body on the ash heap of history after we've squeezed all the production we can out of it, and glibly move on, whistling a merry tune. That's our attitude toward RBs. They're consumables.

We use RBs. It should come as no surprise that RBs show more interest toward their own self interest than good faith performance to the interest of the contract's counterparty planning to chew them up and spit them out. Good faith performance goes both ways, or not at all.

Zeke has a point with his union of RBs. The NFL's relationship with its RBs is toxic. The CBA is typical union stuff, benefiting existing hires over new hires. You "pay your dues" on a rookie contract before you become a vested vet eligible for free agent money, able to feed off the value of the next generation of new hires.

But in the case of RBs, the deal is broken. "Chew em up on their rookie contracts, leaving little for free agency" is the open and explicit strategy with RBs now. All other players are just entering their prime play years after their rookie contracts, but RBs are largely spent. The CBA is a bad deal for RBs.

And it's the Cowboys who made the RB as consumable strategy open with Murray. They didn't hide it. They proudly came out and said it, patting themselves on the back for how clever they are. *We* don't hide it as Cowboy fans. Chew him up, spit him out. We're so clever!

RBs and their agents see this, and are fighting back. Action. Reaction. Bell. Gurley. Now Zeke.

They are the sticks that stir the drink, but the CBA is designed to screw them relative to other players. It's rather entitled of fans and the league to expect them to be loyal soldiers to *our* interests as we throw them out on the minefields to clear the way for profit and fun for everyone else.
Outside of Adrain Peterson, there weren't too many running backs sustaining a high level of play, for an extended period of time, in the NFL. And that's when their value really dropped. Here recently that has been changing and now we're starting to see running back getting paid handsomely. So hopefully things continue to change for the better for those guys.

Well written post and I agree with you whole heartedly.

The Cowboys hold all the cards when it comes to Zeke. He can hold out but it means he does not get paid, the Cowboys own his rights, his seniority is frozen, meaning the Cowboys still have two years to hold his rights even if he sits out the entire year. Plus, if Zeke does hold out, the longer he is out the less he is worth to a team when he comes back.

No team should allow one player to hold them up. The Cowboys are looking at the long term salary cap impact and that is the only thing they can do. Zeke is the one player they can wait on. He is a great RB, but not so great they should destroy their cap to retain him, especially since they don't have to. The Cowboys should try to trade him to a team that can't hurt them for the next few years if he doesn't come in and honor the deal he already has.

I do not want the Cowboys to cave. I would like for the agreement to be amicable.
So would we all. The problem is not the front office. The problem is not Zeke. The problem is Zeke's agent. The sooner people get a hold of this truth, the sooner we can all move on to bigger and better things to talk about.

Yes, it is true that Zeke gains more by staying with Dallas as opposed to seeking greener pastures elsewhere as a result of the loyalty checks he can cash here in Dallas following his career, however, his agent get's no part of that which is why you are seeing no movement in negotiations. The agent wants to reset the market and the Cowboys refuse to do so. Impasse...happens to the best of us.

You will not find one post of mine making that statement. What are you talking? Terribly aimed shot!
Moderator Edit: The OP contains information without an accompanying link to an article, etc.

It was reported that Zeke stated in January, that he would not play without a new contract. Why didn't management get in front of this nonsense at that time? This has nothing to do with Dak, Cooper, or any other player. The lines of communication should have been opened at that time.

Here's a story with the reference to the January edict:

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/27332566/source-zeke-play-dallas-deal

Representatives for running back Ezekiel Elliott have told the Dallas Cowboys that he will not play during the 2019 season without a new contract, a source close to the situation told ESPN's Josina Anderson on Tuesday.

The source added that at this time, it is not likely that Elliott's holdout continues into the regular season, based on the belief that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones wants to get a new deal done before Week 1.

Elliott informed the Cowboys in January that he would not play without a new contract, the source said.

Anyone paying attention even a little bit knew that Zeke wouldn't play 2019 without a new contract the second Gurley signed his deal after Year 3.

There’s been murmurings for months on this forum and around the web...

You are incorrect.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/arch...-a-deal/52904fb0-6f45-4fd4-9640-67c506f55393/

Smith -- the 15th pick of the 1990 draft out of the University of Florida -- was finishing a three-year, $2.175 million contract. His $465,000 salary last season made him one of the NFL's best bargains when he won a second straight rushing championship with 1,713 yards. The previous NFL back to win consecutive rushing championships was Eric Dickerson in 1983-84.

"I was underpaid the first three years," Smith said recently. "Now it's time for me to be paid what I'm worth."In only three seasons, he has rushed for 4,213 yards, last season becoming the first rushing champion to play on a Super Bowl winner.

Who would you rather be at this stage of the young season, Jimmy Johnson or Marv Levy?

Johnson is coaching the defending Super Bowl champion Dallas Cowboys, with their youth and speed, but he's playing shorthanded. Emmitt Smith, the Cowboys' two-time NFL rushing champ, is unsigned and watching the games at home in Pensacola, Fla., while the guy who handles the Dallas payroll, owner Jerry Jones, talks about the financial stability of his club. And Johnson is burning.

"What's the situation with Emmitt?" someone asked Johnson after Sunday's 13-10 loss to Levy's Buffalo Bills, the Cowboys' second defeat in as many games this season.

Other NFL clubs could have offered Smith a contract prior to the start of training camp, although the Cowboys had the right to match any offer. But no other teams made an offer to Smith.

it was a 4yr deal..90,91,92,93..he held out stop trying to find info to counter it..4yr deal he played 3..

I don't even remember this. The Cowboys should have been prepared then.

You are incorrect. He was a restricted free agent. Clearly you didn't read the links that I posted.

And how do you know that “the lines of communication” wasn’t opened at that time? Let me answer that for you, YOU DON’T!

What if everything was finalized but small detail and then Zeke pushes the security guard. We just really don’t know anything!

like the rest of the internet I can find 50 that say it was 4yr deal and he held out..never heard of a 3yr deal anyway and the fact that he held out for more money twice makes it the same...period Gurley got paid after 3 or he would have held out..its anew trend and RBs wont take the bs anymore..

Bottom line Zeke deserves a new deal now and should get paid..period..done with you mightier then tough attitudes like this is the first time in sports player wants new deal and EE has outperformed it..end of story..give the man 14.7 and lets move on to Dak and Amari bloated way overpaid contracts..NEXT
