3) DALLAS COWBOYS: Help LG Connor Williams early and often.

Kellen Moore and Dak Prescott are the toast of the newly minted NFL season, and rightfully so. But if Moore and Prescott are looking at their dynamic offense truthfully right now, the pair realizes there is an area that needs addressing, because everyone knows a team is only as strong as its weakest link. Second-year left guard Connor Williams does a lot of really good things and has steadily improved over two seasons, but in the NFC, he could face the likes of Aaron Donald, DeForest Buckner, Fletcher Cox and Akiem Hicks in playoff matchups. And let's face it: The Cowboys' goal is the Super Bowl, and the better the competition gets, the more mistakes get magnified.

Last week, Williams was flagged for a hold and a false start. I saw poor pass sets lead to a sack by Daron Payne, and Williams was beaten on the play where Prescott threw his only INT of the season. Williams is young and talented, so I don't think a position change is imminent. But he must improve -- and Moore must keep the left guard in mind when it comes to his formations and play calls. I saw Moore give Williams some help vs. the Commanders in Week 2, when Jason Witten hovered around the guard before running his pass route, and when the Cowboys used play-action to slow down the pass rush, and when Ezekiel Elliott hesitated at the line before he checked out into his pattern.

These were all positive signs, but getting Williams help earlier is the key. Moore can't wait until the Cowboys give up the lead or commit a turnover.

CW had 3 bad plays in that game.

I've actually dialed in on him the first two games and he's struggling. A good chunk of the plays in pass protection in which he doesn't have a Frederick help/chip he's either getting straight up bull-rushed or beat immediately off the line.

Depending on the weekly DT match-up I wouldn't be surprised to see more help from Frederick

Normally I would be more patient but reality is they have spent both a 2nd and 3rd round on LG.

There's no excuse to spend 2 quality draft picks and still get subpar play
Wrong.

He had about 3 bad plays total in the Skins game.

Aaron Donald had zero sacks or QB Hits in the playoff game and he lined up against Connor Williams on most snaps.

I don't just "dial in" on players like Connor Williams. I have reviewed all of his snaps in both games using the coaches film.

With sooner they move Williams to tackle the better he can work Behind Tyson for a year until he retires.

I know I'm going to get grief for this but it's time to replace Colombo. a good OL coach can build a unit . I see flaws in technique, and I'm just not seeing it out of Mark
If Callahan was coaching this group they would be the number one force in the league

Should of seen this coming, the Jones only black eye in the OL, IMHO should of brought in a veteran to take over, it has already cost us and it will later. Bringing in help to cover his butt is not a solution but a bandaid and a loss of a "man down" mentality will not fix this either if he does not improve by this year I say replace him, reminds me of late early 2000 OL's who just didn't make the cut and brings back lots of memories of false starts and holdings that cost us lots of games during the Romo years.....I need a beer now.

Both of the Cowboys 2nd and 3rd round Conners will get a chance to be the LG of the future. Should be a good battle once McGovern gets healthy. But no one should be surprised that it takes young players time to develop.

After reviewing a good chunk of the Commanders game again, I am convinced he has the potential to become the new forum whipping boy.

He did not have a good game.

He is literally asking "WHAT IS IT" in terms of the count at the end of the 3rd Q.

I will be watching.

Good. We need a new whipping boy with Taco gone. Though we do still have Heath and Byron

He's full of crap!! He just has to find something. Look around the league, this kid would start on most teams. Stop drinking the hate juice.
Admittedly I haven’t spent much time specifically focusing on Williams, but I can’t help wondering if he has really been that bad, or if the rest of the line has been so good and so dominant that he may just look weaker in comparison. Playing in the midst of Smith, Frederick and Martin of course he may look like a lesser player, but that may not mean he has been a bad player.

If he was as bad as some are saying, you would have noticed it. The fact that you haven't paid much attention to him means he's probably doing a pretty good job.

That’s exactly what I keep thinking. Of course he still needs to improve, but there have been no glaring holes in the OLine

His body type and talents are more typical of a tackle , but there is not a backup guard in the roster that is better than him.

I believe Looney is a better guard than him...

Williams is talented and has upside. But if he doesn’t show more improvement by mid-season, I would consider bringing in Xavier Sua’filo to see if he’s an upgrade. Connor Williams probably wouldn’t have a leash this long if he wasn’t a second round pick.

I’m not at all suggesting he’s a bust or that he should be cut. But I am saying that if he doesn’t improve he shouldn’t be starting.

If isnt starter material then how isnt he a bust?

We need to invest in the Offline as 4 no 1 picks is simply not enough if we want Superbowl baby!
We should trade LVE and Byron for a Stud G ASAP!!!!

The fact I see that he's been inconsistent, up and down. And among a line of stud players playing at a very high level, Williams is clearly the weakest link in that chain. It doesn't mean "he sucks", it means he's the point of attack for opponents.

And Baldy is entirely right that Williams was the one cause of the offense's biggest issues, stumbles, and mistakes. That's not "hate", that's fact. Payne gave Williams a really hard time early in that game before they adjusted protections and gave him more help.

LOL @ this thread... Well at least y'all have moved on from Collins can't play RT nonsense. Our LG got beat a couple of times by a 13th overall draft pick and now he needs to be replaced ASAP. I remember when Tyron was only a RT too, good times. Connor is doing fine and will continue to improve at his current position much like Collins and Smith.

AMEN! If Conner Williams is your weak link on the offensive line, then there is no weak link. Go rewatch the Commanders game. He kicked Payne's butt!
Williams is not nearly as bad as some posters are making him out to be. He is well on his way to being an above average starter with great blocking ability on the move and at the second level and beyond. Sure his body type fits the OT position more, but that doesn’t mean that he can’t develop into a great guard.
