You know, I was kind of happy with his work.
I mean, this was his 1st game ever in the NFL.
I noticed his burst through the line to almost steal the handoff at the goal line.
I lauded him when it happened in the Game Thread.
I lauded him when he was getting stonewalled, but he never gave up and worked his tail off.

I'm hoping that by Year 3 he's looking like a really nice investment.
He seems to have the want-to on the field.
Good write up, He does have promise, but will take some time to develop.

2 things.... I think his natural position will be the 1tech and be a 2 down run stuffer. And I'm good w/ that. 2nd...I like that he hustles to the football. Seemed like he was in hot pursuit quite a bit Sunday.

yeah i dont think so,he is drafted to play 3 tech here after Collins leaves.

Was Hill's performance great? No. Was it horrible? No. It was a solid performance by a rookie who displays rare traits for a big DT. Once he gets stronger and learns to play in the NFL, he's gonna be really good.

Did you notice the Defensive Ends?

That's a type of option play where they want to roll the QB out and have at least 1 player kick out into a route.

They ran the play earlier and the H-Back slammed into the side of Hill and actually did box him out.

This time Hill was attempting to get to the QB before the H-Back could move over to block him.

Hill stayed low to limit the H-Backs ability to hit him from the side.

If Hill had managed to get a few inches over he would have blown up the play right at the hand-off which could cause an turnover.
I've never liked Marinelli's risky schemes. More often than not, they get beat. Once again, had Thompson not beat his blocker's attempt to block him, Thompson would have never been able to make that tackle and prevent TD run up the middle from the 3 yard line.

I did a quick review of all snaps played by Trysten Hill against the Dolphins.

He played 47% of the snaps which was 5th in snaps played by a DLineman.

He has a very high "motor" as we saw in the preseason. He is constantly moving.

The 1st thing I noticed is that he played significant snaps at 1-tech; whereas, he only played 3-tech DT in the preseason. Generally he played 3-tech when the other DT was Covington and played 1-tech when the other DT was not Covington (Starting 1-tech Woods was out).

It is good that they are developing a 3-tech DT that they play at 1-tech DT as opposed to all of DEs they played at 3-tech like Crawford that are really too small at DT.

Hill flashed a few times getting into the backfield and showed his athleticism looping around the outside to crunch the QB on that one play where the QB had moved outside to his right and threw the ball just as Hill ran over him.

He did get blown up by double-teams a couple of times but they didn't draft him to play 1-tech and take on double teams. There was one double team late where he did look silly but he at least occupied the 2 blockers which does help somebody else.

There were a few plays where Hill was double teamed but the other DT was single blocked. That's a good sign.

Hill got his hand on the QB before the hand-off on that play in the redzone where they had an H-Back block him (The play where FS Thompson blew up the RB). They had run the same play earlier and the H-Back was able to get a good block on him the 1st time. On the one in the redzone, he was very close to blowing that up right at the hand-off but was off just a few inches to the side.

Summary: Hill is still very raw but is better right now than last year's 4th DT Daniel Ross, IMO.

Hill has a high motor. That is one of the reasons Im not as worried about his play like I was with Taco.

Much of it's about recognizing what NFL offenses are going to do.

He saw that same play twice in the Miami game where they side-block him with an H-Back and he was better on the 2nd one.

One thing that college DL don't expect before they get to the NFL is how much holding NFL OLinemen get by with every game.

Hill has to learn to get combat those sneaky holds using a variety of techniques; however, right not he just needs to get comfortable with the basics.

Hill simply doenst have the upper body strength to be good right now. Most guys, like you, look for one play to try to justify your hope for the kid.

Anyone can have a good play here and there. Heath is the poster child for that. Most of the plays, Hill got stone walled and looked like a child out there. He does have some nice speed and a high motor. This is why he has potential as compared to the horrid Taco.

If people want to evaluate Hill at 1tech, they should remember that he was neither drafted nor trained to play 1T.

Many are way too negative on Hill. Bottom of the 2nd pick for next year when Collins leaves. Much like Williams, he'll be a different animal next year and the year after.

they had covington start as 1t. after that, there was no other choice at 1t besides hill unless they put collins on 1t.

I watched the same film you did and Hill looked fine for a Rookie starting his first game in NFL. He looked powerful at times, fast, athletic and a motor you can't teach. I would said he is going to be very very good down the road..

The more he plays, the better.

I don't know why, but I really want him to succeed. Maybe it's because I still like Rod. Probably shouldn't have admitted to that around here.

Ummm watch the play again, there was literally an olinemen dedicated to strictly Hill and he embarrassed the guy.

Nope..

It was a trap play.. He shot the gap and was completely unblocked.. Terrible play in that situation by the Dolphins knowing our d line shoots gaps and doesn’t read.

You really really don't pay attention if you think I look at just 1 or 2 plays and form an opinion.

I thought Hill was OK and showed some promise.

As of the moment equating him to Taco is premature.
I think that the Hill-Taco comparrisonis pretty ridiculous. Not only do they play different postions, but the knock against Taco was that he lacked the desire to be a great player (and he suled when he didn't play). Hill has shown none of that. If anything, he has a high motor. Hill is just really green, but I wouldn't say he lacked desire.

Well, this is definitely a feather in the cap moment for our talent evaluators.

He's better than a UDFA we picked up off the waiver wire who started in Canada, played for two teams there and then failed to make a team three successive times with NFL teams until he stuck with Dallas.

I mean, he is better right now.

I should hope he would have been the minute he was drafted.

He is basically a one trick pony at this stage. Explosive enough to benefit out of guessing right at a snap count, which he did in his one hallmark play.

Other than that, he really was not impressive.

But hey, it is good to know he is better than Daniel Ross.

Actually I see a ton of people looking at his one flash play and extracting that to mean he is just going to be incredible once he learns stuff.
