Not for nothing. He got a contract year in exchanged for him standing on the sidelines during the national anthem.

This wasn’t a clear cut trade as ppl think. A lot of talking and prediscussion went in prior to this trade being pulled iff

I can't help but to think that was a factor as well.

I don't think his 8 million was guaranteed for next year. We could have cut him next year anytime before the season started and we wouldn't have been on the hook for anything.

It’s so we can get a comp pick and essentially rent him this year for nothing. Also, do right by the player in case he can make more money elsewhere.

Does anyone know why we gave Michael Bennett a new contract making him a free agent next year when we could have had control of him for all of next year? Don't we want this guy on our team next year?

It is his DOB. Bennett is just too old.

There is my Thought.... Both He and Quinn will be playing for new contracts and Dallas knows they are dumping Crawford this off season, so they are battling it out to see is the better player... And the winner is the one who we pay come Free Agency

Of course it was. He was booted out of NE because of his attitude.

I’m sure Jerry said be a good boy showing up to meetings and standing on the sideline and I’ll make you a FA. This is most likely just a stop over for Bennett. Unless there aren’t any takers next year.

They certainly have to do something with the defensive line. They have virtually nobody signed for 2020, save for 'Mr Inactive' and 'Mr Injured Reserve', who it should be a no-brainer to cut, but clearly they've shown no brains in paying him and keeping him around for as long as they have.

But it's clear that the entire defensive line will be rebuilt in 2020, hopefully in the image of a new defensive line coach, not this one.

Here's the thing on that however, the Cowboys have immediately given up any leverage they had. Bennett is now a free agent next year and can now do whatever he wants.

Which illustrates its all about bolstering the team this year.

Jerry probably hoping this option for Bennett will increase his incentive to light it up for the Cowboys while keeping his attitude in check.

Yep. And it's a strategy that I don't necessarily disagree with. Give him real incentive to perform this year and cross next year when you come to it.

It’s possible we might look at resigning Quinn. But yea, DL will still be a priority in off season. And probably DT if we do sign Quinn. Which would mean we wouldn’t need to start completely over.

But DE, DT and S looks like top priorities. And that’s assuming we sign Cooper and Dak.

because “we have a great FO” that prioritizes player happiness over team wins

nothing new here
Like when they didn't give Romo his job back in 2016, and when they released DeMarcus Ware, Dan Bailey and Dez Bryant, and when they low balled DeMarco Murray after he led the NFL in rushing, and …..? Or are you referring to how they didn't come up to Amari Cooper's asking price, or how they didn't re-sign Beasley?

Has Michael Bennett ever been a FA? If not, then I understand completely why he'd want to be a FA to have some modicum of control over what might be his final team and contract.

And if he's not in the team's long term plans, meaning something in the 3-4 year range, why not let him head to FA?

Ware was let go instead of being traded for the exact reason that the team wanted him to be able to go somewhere else so it was done for his benefit and not the benefit of the team

Dez was babied and coddled and paid a huge contract for being a loud mouth cry baby and played well for 1 year after he got paid when most of us were against paying him and predicted what was coming

Lawrence got paid a kings ransom for holding the team hostage since they had no plan and he has been invisible until the last 2 games and is about to pull his usual vanishing act in December and January

Amari has been hurt all year but will get paid 16-18 mill/year and will under perform his contract and you will be happy

the examples you gave just tell us how ignorant you are of the history of this team

pay attention

It wouldn't surprise me much if the Dallas FO offered Bennet a nice extension!

No reason not to, especially if he keeps making big plays and behaves himself.

Likely a series of one year deals at best given his age, as he's still deemed as a role player and we just don't commit long term to 30+ year old vets on the DL.

well, its a win win..... we pay less this year and some of the cap savings is realized next year as well...plus if he leaves as a FA, then we get a draft pick, probably a 4th, but based on his contract or performance could be a 3rd....and/or we can resign him again for another couple of years, with similar options and spread the cap hit into the future....
