Clock would have stopped when Austin went down anyway.
All the more reason to point to Garrett being a liar.
Clock would have stopped when Austin went down anyway.
Maybe Garrett didn't make the call, maybe it was the special teams coach, but SOMEone did, because he called for the fair catch way too soon.
But it's just another coaching mistake in a LONG LINE of them for Garrett or his staff. To be expected.
I think JJ's getting tired, he's too old, and he's not able to see the light at the end of the Superbowl tunnel. I expect a change to be made in the offseason.
Garrett is full of it. There's no way Austin, who is dying to make a play, ices himself by faircatching with no defender within 20 yards. Garrett should be ashamed to insinuate such a thing. Great leader he is...
There were only 24 seconds left when the ball was snapped for the punt, and by the time Austin caught it probably about 18-19 seconds, so running another 5-8 seconds off would have been bad if he didn't make a big play. Accordingly, if the Cowboys told him to fair catch unless he feels like he has a lot of running room, that would have been the right call. If they told him to fair catch no matter what, that would have been wrong. In fairness, we don't know what he was told.Clock would have stopped when Austin went down anyway.
There's a tweet saying Austin was "doing what he was told" and then Garrett said this:
Garrett should not have put hesitation in Austin’s head! He should have looked him in the eye and said, “go out and make a play”. This fair catch is definitely on Garrett!!!Garrett is full of it. He has always been this way too!!Everything Garrett says comes with built in caveats that give him plausible deniability for every negative thing this team does. He's not just a lame duck head coach, he's a spineless finger wager who refuses to take any blame.

This tweet reveals the sort of confusion that exists due to JGs less than effective instructions. He put the onus of decision-making in the hands of a seldom-used player. Once the confusion manifested itself, Garrett blamed the player for the unclear instructions that he, himself gave. It ended as an unfortunate setup for failure. He should have taken half the blame for infusing the situation with more confusion than necessary. Arrogant people like JG routinely have big trouble admitting to their failings.
Yeah and I'm tired of it. At the end of the day they had the ball in their hands last and failed. We can what if it to death but the outcome will be the same this week and the weeks to comeif they don't start playing and coaching better.just another "what if" with this team in a losing effort.

They don't tell players not to make a big play … they may well have told Austin to fair catch unless he was confident of a big play. At that point Austin has to make a choice. That's a cop out. In crucial situations you make sure what you want your players to do. Looking at that picture, there is a 70% chance Austin runs it back all the way for a TD. I can't believe how much room they can Austin outside. Even if he gets it to the 20 they are much better off.
But I'll stick with my previous comments. They lost this game when they had 1st and 10 from the Vikings 15 with plenty of time on the clock. There was no way they could have known that the Vikings would do such a poor job of covering that punt. My guess is the Cowboys expected the Vikings would emphasize punt coverage. Instead the focused on protecting against the block. Buty if the players on unprepared to make the right decision then its the coaches fault for not preparing them.
I'm still not sure he did that. If asked a question by the media, is he supposed to lie and say there were no options - no ability to call an audible, no decisions for anyone to make on the sidelines or on the field?Imagine throwing your QB, OC, and ST/WR under the bus in one day. Does this man have no shame?
