Why do you think no decision has been announced yet?

I thought it would be fun to let everyone guess at why they think no decision has been made yet.

My theory is that *IF* the Cowboys are indeed not re-signing Garrett, the guy they want is on the staff of a playoff team, likely a highly seeded team with a bye week, so they know they can let Garrett finish out his contract and avoid actually "firing" him while still going after the guy they want once that happens.

What is your guess?

That's probably the best theory if he's on his way out. The bad thing about this scenario is leaving current assistants in limbo. Maybe they have contingency positions waiting for them if things go that way.

I can see there not being any urgency other than assembling a staff.

A reasonable assumption. Plus it allows Jerry to avoid actually releasing or firing Jason. Just let his contact run out.

Now if the prospects team loses this weekend or next then we might see an announcement before Jan 14th.

I think it's a few things.
One: Lack of respect for the fanbase.
Two: He likes Jason, is comfortable with him, and doesn't want to move on so he isn't going to be quick about it
Three: He wanted to "save" this in some measurable way. Consulting role, Front Office, Coach... but can't
Four: He knows that he needs to hire a "real" HC and doesn't want to... goes back to number two a bit.

That's a few of the reasons I think.

I think Jerry is waiting for you to lift the new thread ban.

My guess is that they already have an agreement in principle with Urban Meyer. And that they offered Jason Garrett another role within the organization and gave him a few days to think over that offer. I think Garrett has decided that he still wants to coach, so I think he will ultimately be leaving the organization. At that point, the Cowboys will likely conduct a few 'just for show' interviews to fulfill requirements and make things look good, and then Meyer will be announced as the next head coach.

I think the delay is about time frame.

Do you hire a wiz bang coach to get the most out of Dak and Zeke while they are still here? 5 years max

Or do you hire a more stable coach suitable for long term next generation players as well? 5-15 max

My guess is Booger is all tied up with what he wants to do and what is best for his team. He is discovering, first hand, why owners don't get too involved in their organizations and hire others to take care of business. But, it is a family run business so why would we expect anything different than this?

They keep Garrett around in case they don't get the guy(s) they want - he's their backup. I prefer beheading instead of firing. That way, only his ghost could come back.

But if he will be so coveted by other teams why not just mutually agree to part ways and let him look for employment elsewhere. While being thoughtful and kind to him, are you not hurting him at same time?

Yes. This is the part that doesn't add up in that theory. The league works on one calendar and Jerry Jones on another. Teams are interviewing and signing head coaches NOW, not when the Cowboys decide they feel like doing something.

It’s clear-cut what’s been happening, there’s been a lot of homosexual activity occurring at these meetings.

What information? He claps and likes to show highlight reels to motivate the players because he lacks the skills to do it on his own. What on earth could anyone learn from the turd?
Get a grip. Exit interviews, gathering pros and cons of other coaches etc.....

I think Jerry is just waiting until the end of his contract on Jan 13th so that he can say he didn't fire him. He just didn't renew his contract. I believe it's out of respect for Garrett.

That fools nobody. Unless someone wants to be fooled.

People keep saying this, but it totally misses the point... they aren't getting together to talk about what they got for Christmas... there is some purpose that has driven the decision to meet.
I think jerry wants to keep him in some capacity within the organization
I don’t think they will get that worked out and on the 14th he will be gone, if not sooner
I think timing depends on if jerry has a guy on the hook or not and when he becomes available

I'm saying they don't want to "fire" him because he's like family to them. By letting him finish out his contract, they can always say they never "fired" him. I'm not saying they are holding on to him in case they don't get someone else.
I agree with this but the question is...why not just announce that Garrett will not be extended - THAT is the maddening part about it all.
