I'm ecstatic that Jerry did the right thing and provided a change in the head coaching department that was long overdue. Having said that, what are things going to look like once Mike McCarthy steps on board?
Let's be honest with ourselves as fans for a second and acknowledge that there is not one singular coaching candidate that we would all be on board with. Sure some would of loved BB or Peyton, but there is always going to be differing opinions on what is best for this group of players.
I think instead of us over analyzing the situation we need to break things down like this. First and foremost we needed a new direction, and secondly we needed a coach with experience as a proven commodity. While McMcarty may have some warts, there is no doubt the guy was been a high percentage winning coach, who I remembered fearing because he always seemed to keep his cool and have his team ready to play. Sure we can debate whether or not it was all Aaron Rogers, but you can also point to McCarthy being around and coaching guys like Farve, Montana as evidence to understanding what greatness looks like.
On the surface this looks like a pretty good choice for where we sit right now in this point in time. We desperately need a new offense that can take advantage of what Dak can do and I believe McCarthy is a good coach to move the needle in the right direction. Game management just improved ten fold, and we now have someone whom actually game plans and will use analytics to try and gain advantages.
The last thing I want to say on this topic is that we also need to remember this isn't one of Jerry's adopted sons so there is no doubt results will need to come fast or he won't be here very long. I think at this point it's important that as fans that we all take a deep breath and be happy that we're moving on from an unproven experiment to a guy whom really is qualified to lead a team. I don't think it's a great idea to over analyze because we don't know how much McCarthy has grown as a coach since being let go, and if he has figured out way to improve upon his past work it may be just enough to get things going and get us over the hump.
