Who better to evaluate DB's than the guy that had to game plan against them?
I am in the minority but Byron Jones would be a critical keep for me. He's the most consistent player on the D and one of the two best. And if a team wants to make their CB's better, get good Safeties.
I keep him, Prescott, Cooper and possibly Quinn. Then shop for a defensive tackle and safety, if we're serious about improving the defense.
We probably need two DTs, but I could live with Woods, Hill and a draft pick (and even Crawford for the right price) competing for time if lined up next to a bona fide starter.
Ends would primarily be Lawrence, Quinn and Gregory.
Our secondary would be Jones, Lewis and Awuzie at corner, a bona fide starting safety and either Woods or Wilson at the other safety spot.
Linebackers would be Smith, LVE and possibly a cheaper FA or draft pick.
If the Joneses do what's been typical in FA the past few years, though, we can expect to likely sign our own and then throw some second- or third-tier guys at DT and S. Hopefully, McCarthy will convince them that they need to do more than that.
