My favorite two are U2, the band I grew up with, and Led Zep (still follow Plant avidly), followed by Springsteen and the E St band, Blue Oyster Cult, and the Clash. Also liked the Who a lot.

But if it's the best I go with Juke's top three. Tho I don't like the "British Invasion" mopping up the top 3...we might all be listening to doo-wop if they Brits hadn't whitewashed Chuck Berry.

1. Beatles (Like Mike Irvin they belong in the HOF if just for historical significance)

2. Stones (with that longeveity and soul influence, they have a justifiable claim to "greatest rock band" ever)

3. Led Zep (those eastern influences, not just the musicians.)

4. Springsteen and E St. (bringing it all back home to be born again in the USA= Little Stephen Jersey Guys Rule!)

5. U2 ( for the message as well as the music, the seminal musical influence in my life)

6. Nirvana (yeah, they were that good, and some of their clones are as well. Grunge was too major an influence to overlook)

7. The Ramones (can't overlook what they, or the Sex Pistols, did for rock)

8. Bowie, in any manifestation from the thin white duke to glitter king..

9.The WHO - some of their their rock anthems are immortael, Baba P'Reilly, folks?

10. Linkin Park..mark my words...they'll go down as the best rock-rap fusion ever.

I want to get Clapton and Beck in there, but nothing from the Yardbirds thru Cream to the solos had as much the band influence..just individual musician..they will have to top another list)

Honorable mention: The Doors.

The grateful dead (maybe they dont belong here as not really a "rock" band - more folk, blues or bluegrass) but they had so many good jams and almost never get any radio play.

Oh yeah, you can make a very very song case the Dead belong in any Top Ten.

I'd have to add Metallica to the list of great bands, they've been around for awhile now and have put out a lot of good stuff IMO.

Led Zeppelin is the #1 Rock and Roll Band of All Time.

You'd sell me with that long post, on any jury. Technically, musically, innovatively, Led Zep had it all over the Beatles and the Stones (everyone's tunes sound alike to some extent, but pay the 100 bucks for a Stones concert ticket, and be amazed at how each song is the same as the other), but the cultural impact of the Beatles, and the inter-generational iconic nature of the Stones give then the edge.

Did you get Plant's new solo CD?

Nobody likes KISS???

1 Black Sabbath
2 AC/DC
3 Metallica
4 KISS
5 Zepp
6 Ozzy
7 Korn
8 Pantera
9 Jimi Hendrix Experience
10 Alice Cooper( the old Cooper not the newer garbage. )

The Ramones (can't overlook what they, or the Sex Pistols, did for rock)
true, but they were punk bands.

That's what I say regarding Bruce.

I'm not a big fan...but yeah, I'll give ya Bruce.

I figured Bruce was really a solo act...but that's not accurate.

He is certainly no more of a solo than Fogerty was with Creedence. In fact, Creedence was John Fogerty. Bruce's work was really aided by the guys in the band.

So I'll move my dark horse Rascals out of my top ten and move Bruce in their place.

OK, how 'bout a list from a guy whose musical tastes ran more to folk than rock growing up, then kinda morphed over to the blues somehow??

1) The Eagles... ain't nobody else even close... I say that the Eagles are what happens to rock when it grows up...

2) The Beatles... never was their biggest fan, though I loved "Let It Be" (I mean the album here)... but I have to recognize the sheer body of their work...

3) The Rolling Stones-- again, not a particularly big fan, but I like some of the stuff they did, and they've stood the test of time...

4) The Grateful Dead... happiness to me is listening to one of their acoustic albums, like "Reckoning"...

5) Creedence Clearwater Revival... nobody else sounds quite like them...

6) Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band... unlike some others, I think that the band deserves their billing, and he shouldn't be considered a singles act... I mean, his latest acoustic album was just pitiful, a complete waste of my 15 bucks...

7) Cream-- the first real rock band I ever got into... I've found some of the other posters' comments about Clapton's work with them to be quite similar to my own opinions...

8) The Doors-- yeah, the music was moody and introspective and kinda dark, but it was also different and quite intriguing to me... Jim Morrison was great, there's just nothing else that can be said...

9) Little Feat-- I'm kinda surprised that nobody else mentioned them, but I'll be happy to throw them out there... Lowell George was the baddest slide guitar player of his day...

10) Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band... I'm a Parrothead, and make no apologies for listing them here... any band that regularly employs steel drums merits special consideration, IMO...

Almost making the list were Fleetwood Mac, Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band, and my dark horse-- the Grass Roots... anybody remember them??

Silver Bear, i like little feet too. Their music just kinda puts you in a certain groove, (real happy, amped up and raedy to go party with good friends).

Also since your a dead fan, got any ***** picks albums ? (live cuts that were released after Jerry left us)... i've got 4 or 5, love the way they'll do the same songs but totally different tempo or beat on the different albums, and the improvised jam sessions are great !!

My money is on the Eagles because, as you state, you are a Folk fan...yet, while these guys can sing some mellow stuff...and sing it REALLY well...they can also play their backsides off...Felder (since gone) was a great guitar player...Walsh is not exactly a slouch either...I've seen them live a half dozen times (a few months ago was the last time) and those vocals are ON THE NOSE live as well.

Creedence was the ultimate American rock and roll band. They had balls....I've seen Fogerty live a bunch of times as well...and it's amazing when you hear song after song that are simply great. For me, rock and roll never got better than the song Born On The Bayou...and later, Fortunate Son. The ballsiest anti-war song ever written.

I started to mention the yardbirds....just for the fact they can boast to having Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page as guitarist during their time.

The only reason I had Cheap Trick over Boston is because they did what they did for a long time. Boston had the one flash in the pan album and then it was over.

Tell ya what, how 'bout we switch Boston for Foreigner?

One - never was a Cheap Trick fan.

Two - I have seen this criticism of Boston, though I find it grossly unwarranted. They had one album (Boston, 1976), that was much bigger than any other. But they had many other hits. See the following:

Boston, 1976 Hits - More than a Feeling, Peace of Mind, Foreplay/Long Time, Rock and Roll Band, Smokin', Hitch a Ride, Let me take you Home Tonight.

That's a heck of an album. That many songs on one record. I excluded one, that's right, ONE song.

Don't Look Back, 1978 - Don't Look Back, A Man I'll Never Be, Feelin' Satisfied, Party

Not nearly as large as the first album, but still a few good hits.

Third Stage, 1986 - Amanda, Cool the Engines

8 years later. The band with (rightly so) the reputation of not caring that much gets another album out after 8 years. This will be their last real success. With only two notable songs, calling it a real success is a stretch, but Amanda was a great rock ballad.

They had one extremely successful album, but 2 and 10 years later, they still put out hits. Bah to cheap trick.

That's 15 hits over 10 years. Does Foreigner have that many hits?

(BTW - of course I am biased. Huge Boston fan, saw them in concert for my 20th birthday. Note that I only turn 22 this year, so it isn't like I was around when they were still making hits.

That being said - I love their new[is] album, Corporate America. Only a real fan loves the albums from bands from the 70s/80s that they put out current era.)

Oh, Tio, you can laugh...it was that transparent a homerism ..getting my CURRENT favorite rock band onto a top ten list viaa "predicton".

Absolutely Norish.

But really, it's been a long time since I've been into a rock band as much as this one..unless of course, Evanescence comes out with a strong follow-up...let's not forget the 'Goth' bands

OH my...yes you are a fan. And it's pretty cool that you are a fan of a band that predated you.

First off...obviously I must think pretty highly of them to have them in my top ten...

It's not as if I am saying they stunk.

I was there for that first album and I thought they were going to be the next super band. I was floored at how good that first album was. In fact, I was in a band at the time that played their stuff. (We had a drummer who's vocal range was almost that high)

Fact of the matter is, say what anyone will about the Beatles, what made them phenomenal was that they changed sounds from album to album. They had a commercial forumla that worked and could have said, "Hey if it ain't broken, don't fix it"...

Boston on the other hand (and I will admit, I stopped listening after Third Stage) had essentially the same sound on those first three albums.

With regard to "hits"...sorry but I don't agree. And neither did the Billboard charts. My nickel says that of all the songs you listed from albums two and three that none of them made the charts...except maybe Don't Look Back.

Amanda was, in fact, a great song. But it wasn't a hit. It might have broken the top 100 when it was realized but not much more.

In fact, as far as "hits" none of the songs you listed, with the exception of "More Than A Feeling" was a "hit"

Again, that's not to say they weren't great songs.

With regard to hit songs, I'm pretty sure that all of these by Foreigner made the charts...

Feels Like the First Time; Headgames; Double Vision; Cold as Ice; Waiting for a Girl Like you; Urgent.

So that said...Boston's first album had a great impact on me....and all these years later, I can still listen to it and marvel at how talented they were.

So, hats off to ya...good choice for a favorite band.

They aren't my favorite, just up there. But - wow. I guess I should have consulted the Billboards from those days. I thought all those songs were up there, mostly because I still hear them all often on the classic rock stations. ifeelsmall.

(For the record, favorite band, as far as rock goes, is Styx. Funny - 3 of my favorites are all corporate rock bands - Styx, Journey and Boston. But the other band that received the corporate rock label, Foreignor, I can't stand. Odd, eh?)

2. Nirvana. Bah to all the 40 plus who dotn get their twisted greatness:)

5. Fleetwood Mac-- Hey I love Stevie Nicks raspy voice.
6. Black Sabbath. Ozzy for the win!
7. Areosmith. longevity and hits.
8. ACDC. Long lasting anthems. stadium rock for true.
