Do y’all remember that scenario after there was a defensive holding call. We got an 8 yard play and I thought we would still accept the penalty to stay at first down but MM chose to decline it to make it 2nd and 2.

Was I the only one that would rather have the extra down rather than the two yards?

I didn’t like mm’s decision on that one even though it didn’t really matter in the long run.

Disagree with you guys.

I'm with Coach McCarthy on this one.

2nd & 2 at that moment with less than 30 seconds to play and only 1 timeout left was better than 1st & 5 and 5 more yards to go with such little time and only 1 timeout left to get Maher into a makeable FG spot to try to win the game.

Yeah, my spidey senses at the time said to take the 1st and 5....gives you an extra down to work with. Just hoped it didn't come back to bite us in the butt by getting a penalty on the next play and facing a 2nd and long. Good thing it didn't matter. Oh well, back to .....:oldcouple:

Mike was 2nd guessed because he got bailed out on the wrong call.

1st and 5 was the right call.

Obviously, time and distance were a factor in his decision not to accept the penalty, but thank goodness it worked out.. Just imagine the scrutiny and second guessing he'd be dealing with if Maher missed:facepalm:

Big Mike can definitely make some curious decisions in just about every game.

But I do like the way he keeps the team together, going back to his first year when everything was a mess. He keeps this team together and they seem to play hard for him. Results don't always reflect that, but I think the team genuinely like Mike. I do too.

My guess is it was due to that specific situation. Normally you always take the 1st and 5. But that was late in the game and they needed every yard they could get. Plus it made it a bit easier to get a first on the next play.

Maher's game winning field goal barely made it through. If you take away those two yards he could have missed. So it wasn't about getting more downs it was about field position. McCarthy made the right decision on that one.

Situational football, situational decisions.

This is a great thread

there is absolutely no doubt that the idiot head coach got this wrong. The extra down is far more important than the 3 yards. Not to mention that same idiot screwed up the game clock management a few moments later burning his last time out w 18 seconds left, lololll. He’s totally clueless.

It was about the yards at that time and being closer to the FG.

Thank you two for truly understanding football. I am just amused how people is calling him an idiot, when in reality they’re clueless about strategic football. When it happened and the ref was talking to him, I said no doubt he takes the extra yards. Those extra three yards had us in field goal ranch and it was actually under 20 seconds with one time out. They wouldn’t ever had been able to use the EXTRA down. They where only able to run TWO plays after that call!

But y’all may continue!
