1st rd Tackles who have the flex to start inside

Clearly the Cowboys have a huge hole to fill at Left Guard, but they also have to start to think about a future replacement for Tyron Smith at Left Tackle. Not only have the Cowboys drafting Tackles and kicked them inside (Collins, Martin, they also have started Tackles inside and kicked them to Tackle (Adams, Collins).

The 1st rd positional value is very small at the Guard position, but not the case for a future starter at Left Tackle. Which legitimate 1st rd prospects have this ability that could be available at pick #24?

-Penning-many believe he will be long gone, but he would be the best fit.

-Raimann-the former TE prospect like Nate Soldier was. Needs to add strength.

-Tyler Smith-yes, needs a complete overhaul with his technique, but cannot teach his athletic ability.

I know Green has played Tackle on the college level, but some think he is a Guard only on the next level. Love the prospect, but not sure if he could replace Tyron down the line.

Tyler Smith is a complete boom or bust pick. Have we demonstrated the ability to coach OL out of penalties?

Looking at his combine performance nothing really jumps off the page to me. What am I missing? The fact he ran 5.03 at 335?

I agree, he is more of an upside player who needs to overhaul his technique. See him more as a day 2 player.

Yep, especially if we get to trade down. Agree with those that fear this as a risky proposal, however, we aren't picking first half of the round and it appears that the value is in the 2nd/3rd Rd depth that maintains its gradings.
I wonder if we take that route if our O-Line gradings are pretty close and covers enough players in the 1st/2nd 'tweener range.

Kinnard is one of my top targets in the 2nd...big nasty mauler that will be solid against the run.

Tyler Smith's physical ability is terrific. Maybe as good as anybody physically.
- Lack of technique could mean that he is not already maxed out or it could mean that it will always be problem.

I don't see Raimann at OG. He is tall like Penning but lacks Penning's lower body power.
- He has short arms to play LT (32-5/8").
- All Pro Joe Thomas has short arms but it's rare to see top LTs with short arms.
- Penning 34-1/4" and Smith 34" have decent arm length but still on the lower end for NFL LTs on average.

Penning would be an ideal selection, as you could start him inside, then kick him to either Tackle spot later.

Tyler Smith is more of a ball of clay, developmental player, especially at Tackle. Many think he could see the field earlier as a Guard.

I agree, outside of Penning falling, there won't be much value at the position. Guards like Green/Zion make more sense then reaching on Smith or Rainmann.

Guard-only types are almost always going to be BPA if position value is not considered.

There are often 5 OTs draft before the 1st OG-only type player despite the top OG being a better OG than the 5th OT is at OT.
- That imbalance continues though the mid/late rounds.

If you want an OT outside of the top 10, then you'll almost always have to pass on a higher rated OG.
