Back in the day when rounds 1-3 were on Saturday and 4-7 were on Subday...

First Round (#5 overall)

CB Terrance Newman

I never, ever would have expected the then 25 year old Terrance "Toast" Newman to still be playing in 2018! I suppose he's not as underwhelming as we thought he was while in Dallas. Ultimately, a solid first pick, #5 overall.

Second Round

C Al Johnson. One of the many collosal 2nd round failures of the 2000s.

Third Round

TE Jason Witten. HOFer. No addendum needed.

Fourth Round

LB Bradie James. Nice pick for the 4th round. More than serviceable, especially after Dallas went to a 3-4 D. Registered 202 tackles in 2008.

Not to shabby overall in rounds 1-4, outside of the Al Johnson pick, especially with a HOFer as part of that class.

Great draft, hard to believe Newman is still playing, he just needed a change

Terrance Newman didn't get "toasted". The biggest complaint about him here was that he didn't create turnovers and dropped a lot of interceptions. At some point the team decided his production wasn't worth his salary. I bet most Cowboys fans would like a do-over on that one now that they know how hard its been to get decent corners around here. Newman was always solid. He was a better corner than Orlando Scandrick.

I thought the fans at Dallas were wrong on Terrance Newman. I thought he was really good at CB and some fans expected him to be as good as Primetime. He wasn't.

What he was though, was an above average CB with potential. All CBs allow receptions and when a Dallas corner does, the fans lose their minds. He has proved his grittiness. The FO often will overpay a player and then fans expect the field performance to match inflated salary. We saw it with Carr, Crawford and Dez. If Dallas could have worked out a better team friendly Deal with Newman it would have been a good fit.

Witten and Newman were heck of a selection and have proved their abilities year after year. Hats off to them for their longevity.

'Toast' wasn't my nickname for him. That moniker came from several fellow Cowboys fans on the various message boards back in the day.

During that era Jacques Reeves was the corner that got frequently toasted, which was strange since he ran a 40 in the 4.28 range.

Those were some good times. I remember sitting with the boys down at the bar ALL DAY Saturday drinking adult beverages, eating food, and BSing about the draft.

I used to love Terrance Newman and never knew why everyone hated him towards his later years. He was our most consistent CB. He wasn't a INT machine like Champ Bailey, Ty Lawson, etc in that era but he was still our best corner.. And look, he's still playing. It's crazy.

Newman was fighting through injuries the year before we released him. It appeared that he was on the downside of his career because of it.

Curious if that microfracture surgery Johnson had on his knee his rookie year affected his play throughout his career. Not saying he would of been lights out better, but still not everyone who has the surgery in any sport returns to pre form.
But Gurode finally took over the center spot anyways and became a legit probowl center even with his inconsistency with shotgun snaps.

That being said, I hated we passed on Witten in the second for Johnson. Thought for sure Witten would be gone by then.

This.
Terrance was always very good. We certainly haven't had a better corner in the past 15 years.

Newmans problem is that he never got his head around to look for the ball, too many plays where he was in perfect position but didn't see the ball. I think fans just got tired of him, Great career though.

I didn't know he was a two sport star, lol

Newman was a very good player with us for many years. I don’t know who really thought the pick was underwhelming.

Last week I heard TNew is 39 and the oldest defensive player in the league now. He did cheat the system some coming in with the Cowboys at 25 years old.

Newman was just another player thrown to the curb by this FO and fan base.

There's a trend on this site and many others I assume of picking a player to pick on and blaming said player for problems that are much bigger than a single individual.

The list of names is troubling with Dez Bryant being the latest.

Wasn't Newman drafted at the age of 24 or something? I remember he was a little older for a drafted player. And he's still in the league. Amazing.
