2006 cap numbers in millions

Ramsey 2.882

Brunell 5.433

Portis 5.476

Moss 4.260

Cornelius Griffin 4.883

Phillip Daniels 2.6

Renaldo Wynn 3.453

Marcus Washington 5.167

Arrington 12.141

Springs 5.558

Hall 1.42

Samuels 6.182

Barrow 3.417

Bowen 2.4

Walt Harris 2.250

Jansen 5.603

McCants 2.167

Noble 2.150

Taylor 3.120

Randy Thomas 4.912

Thrash 1.125

Raymer 1.119

Rabach 1.045

Patten 2.447

Total for 24 players 91.21 Million or approximately 5.7 million over this years cap number.

Now last season the cap increased by about 5 million Dollars which has been about the average increase in the
cap every year since 1998.

The largest increase ever has been 10.9 mill increase from the 1997 to 1998 cap. So averaging 10.9 and
5 mill is 7.95 mill

So we will say next years cap increases 7.95 million then the NFL will have a cap of 93.45 and the above 24 players accounting for 91.21 million of that leaving 2.24 Million in cap room for the other 29 players on their roster.

This does not take into considerations cuts/trades or this years rookie contracts

The Commanders have been in "cap hell" next year for as long as I can remember at this point, I'm not buying it yet

Daniel Snyder wants to build a good team but really does not know what he is doing. You have a 53 man roster and he is over the cap with 24 players?
That is bad managment and will hurt them in the long run. Curly

The skins have found a different way of handling their cap, and the crazy thing is their fans think they discovered a new loop hole and called pap smurf a genius. Why do you think EVERY off season they have to let go of players THEY want to keep? They have had a very high roster changes because of their over spending and they haven't had any continuity that's one main reason they've struggle. Their whole franchise is inconsistence but they expect consistency huh? Does that make sense.

Should get interesting when they try to talk Arrington into giving up some money.

Brunell's contract will get reworked to vet min, about $800k. That plus his signing bonus will add up to $2M, saving them about $3.2M in cap space. They should just cut him, but that would accelerate over $6M in signing bonus.

from that list, it looks like Barrow and Bowen will both be cut after 2005. Noble looks pretty shaky as well, they may actually draft some d-line for once next draft. Hall may also go or get re-structured. Daniels looks shaky as well, and Brunell may be a June 1st 2006 cut.

If the Skins were even a remote threat, this would be great news.

They paid for it THIS year.
They lost a lot of good players.

The cap numbers aren't really the issue. The issue is that they have a bad team. Snyder will do what he does every year, he'll cut several of those big number players, sign some new ones, draft poorly, and they'll be one step forward, two steps back again. Same old 'Skins.

Fred Smoot who everyone here and in the media believed was not a #1 CB and once Bailey left he would be exposed as such ? Replaced, younger and cheaper.

Antonio Pierce a back-up LB in his first season starting asking for a Pro-Bowl LBs wage ? Replaced younger and cheaper.

Toeverneous Coles ? A #1 WR with the worst YAC yards imaginable because of this bum toe that he refused to have corrected, not to mention he was traded for a speedier, healthier WR ? Replaced younger and cheaper.

Who else did the Commanders lose of importance ? Chad Morton..haha. Not needed to begin with. I always hated his signing.

I kinda thought it was foolish to draft 2 OT's in the 2004 draft, especially with very little picks after Taylor. However, there were no other linemen picked up this offseason, 2 guys for depth last year was a good payoff as now they have depth on the line. Picked up 2 LB's and 2 FB's this year, again for depth, as some guys have ending contracts after 2005 or were just getting older.

We lost Pierce and Smoot, and yes I think they were pro-bowl snubs, but I hold no grudge against them. I wish we still had Smoot, Pierce not so much. We got a couple of people to stand up for the MLB spot. Smoot will be hard to replace, and I cant argue with ya on him.

Especially when he seems to genuinely believe that they reneged on a 6.5 million dollar bonus in his last deal... I rather doubt he'll be inclined to help them out in the future...

Mind you, I'm passing no judgement on whether or not the Skins really did initially offer that bonus, but Lavar sure seems certain they did...

I dunno, seems to me that being forced to cut a slew of players season in and season out is one sign of cap hell... having to trade Champ Bailey (though they got an excellent return for him) was indicative of cap hell... losing Antonio Pierce and Fred Smoot when they clearly didn't want to lose them is also indicative of cap hell...

Just for purposes of contrast, the only cuts the Cowboys made this year were players that they didn't think fit into their plans any more... none of those moves was cap motivated...

Younger and cheaper perhaps, but as good??

In addition, you conveniently ignore that the Skins didn't WANT to lose any of the 3... only Coles' trade was not cap-related, that one was because Laveraneus wanted out, real bad...

Didn't surprise me a bit... in fact, the only surprise has been that Gibbs hasn't attacked his subpar offensive line more aggressively... when he returned to the Skins, I would have bet anything that his first priority would be to build the second coming of the Hogs... that's what made Gibbs' teams good to great, one of the best OLs in the game...

However, there were no other linemen picked up this offseason, 2 guys for depth last year was a good payoff as now they have depth on the line.

No, they don't... if the Skins suffer an injury or two on the OL, the quality of play will suffer badly... Rabach is a SLIGHT improvement over Raymer, but is hardly a top player at his position... after all, the offensive line he started for last year was ranked next to last in the league in total offense, in spite of having a former 2000 yard back... the return of Jansen will upgrade right tackle significantly, but other than that, it was status quo...

And Chris Samuels' play last year ranged from decent to pretty awful, while Derrick Dockery was a disappointment to me as a Horns fan, and Randy Thomas wasn't all that either... but if the Skins can keep that starting line intact for most of the season, they'll have a mediocre line, nothing more... certainly not a top 10 line...

And if they get bit by the injury bug, they're in deep doo-doo... at center, the replacement would be Raymer, and I'm sure you know how awful he was last year... at tackle, it would likely be one of the rookies, both of whom are unproven late rounders... at guard, it would be 90 year old Ray Brown...

Picked up 2 LB's and 2 FB's this year, again for depth, as some guys have ending contracts after 2005 or were just getting older.

At least one of those linebackers (McCune) will probably be a solid addition, but neither of the FBs made any sense at all... oh, I know that they figure Manuel will make the move to H-back, but there's no certainty that he'll be able to make the switch comfortably... and I have to think those picks would have been better spent on upgrading that offensive line...

Hey, that's honest enough... even logical...

Pierce was your best backer last year, Smoot your best CB, Coles your best WR. None of those guys were replaced with anywhere near as good of a player.

Carlos Rogers has a chance to be good at some point. But he's a rookie at a tough position and he is hurt to boot. Chances of him being as good as Smoot this year are between zero and nil.

Honestly the Skins lost about the best young talent they had at those positions. Pierce was the best cost versus performance guy on the team.

Chad Morton was a "big signing" from the Jets which cost a 5th round pick if I recall correctly because of his special teams impact.

Santana Moss is maddeningly inconsistently. I know I had him as a 6th Wr in fantasy football. Coles was catching 5 passes a week even with his injuries.

The coach was calling these guys core Commanders just a month before they bolted.

They are big losses and the first ones the Skins have had to deal with. Individually probably not a big deal but collectively they give the Skins the worst offseason of any team in the NFL.

No, they didn't.

They reloaded with "Joe Gibbs" guys. They got rid of bad, untalented team cancers and replaced them with superior players.

Or so I read at "Extremeskins".
