They did, however, use the incentive loophole to push forward cap room from 2007. That will increase their cap room by either $5,602,500 or $11.025 million, depending on the mechanics of the odd way they did it.

This seems like a pretty intelligent thing to do. Why don't we see the Cowboys working the cap like this instead of letting previous year's cap room go to waste?

We do it every year we have leftover cap room. This year, we did it with Tony Curtis ($3.5 million). Last year, we did it with Abram Elam ($3.1 million). In 2004, we did it with Tony Romo ($5 million).

His cap number is 6.37 million, because the Option Bonus is prorated, I know that. I'm just saying that they can save 11 million dollars in "actual" money, as that is the total amount they would have to pay him to keep him next year. In all fairness, my point stands, they can save a ton of money by cutting (5.5 million freed up by doing this),or reworking his deal.

In any case, my point is simply that the patriots are far from being "in trouble" cap-wise as the poster had pointed out.

Your premise is correct, but some of your numbers are off.

Exclusive Rights Free Agents -- guys who have been in the league for only one or two years. If we tender them an offer (at least their minimum salary), they can't even talk to other teams. They either have to sign our offer or sit out.

It's my understanding that cap numbers don't count for free agents...free agents are players that aren't under contract, hence the term free. Now I'm not sure about the restricted guys, I believe they will not count against the cap until they workout a new deal or they are offered a 1 yr tender by the summer deadline.

I also have a cap question, does anyone know how much cap room we would gain losing guys like Ellis, Glenn, Carpenter and Spears?

AdamJT,

If, as expected, we trade a few players to Miami, say Jason Ferguson for example, we only would be responsible for the pro rata signing bonus which in his case is $1.2 million and since his cap number for 2008 is $4.0 million, we would actually be plus $2.8 million, I believe.

If I am close to right on this, then if, again as some expect, we do lose several players in trades to Miami or Detroit, it should effect the cap hopefully in a positive way unless the amount of bonuses due exceed the salary for 2008. Is that correct?

Also, on draft picks, isn't there a set amount alloted based on the picks that we have and/or acquire or give up that makes it a bit more friendly than just the full amount of the contracts?

Based on some of these assumptions, what do you expect us to do in free agency, stay with second tier guys or do you believe we will be able to afford to go after a first tier guy like a Trufant or Samuels?

In watching the DC broadcast on Fox, they (announcers and beat writers for the Cowboys) stated that Anthony Henry would be a safety next year but would not elaborate. That says to me that if we resign Hamlin, Roy will be traded, so what would be the cap ramifications on Roy? Thanks.

Sandy, I would take that as a rumor with a grain of salt as well. Henry had a great year at CB, and I think Dallas will give Roy one more year to turn it around, it wasn't that long ago that he was hitting people and making game changing INTS. There's no guarantee that Hamlin would be a pro bowl strong safety, so I think they'll leave him at FS where he's been the missing defensive qb we were looking for since Woodson retired.

I do expect them to sign Drayton Florence though.

EXCELLENT information my good man. Excellent.

I, for one, don't see us Franchise Tagging Flo. He's been a great player, and likely has 2-3 good years left in him, but I don't see us using the Franchise tag on him. That's a boat load of money you're going to have to pay him if you do.

Maybe he'd be worth it, I don't know, but I don't see us doing that.

Thank you Adam.

I like the stability of this team. We don't have to do anything drastic finanicially and can afford a top Free Agent when we need one.

It's about to change as we try and retain our deep core of young players and balance that with high-priced critical veterans like Flozell and TO.

15+ million is nice, but the Cowboys will have some hard decisions to make.

Very hard decisions to make.

Yeah 16 mill sounds like a lot but once you start hacking away at it with $7 to $8 mil in cap space going to Canty, Barber and the draft picks... $9 mill in cap space isn't going to get us very far. Plus Newman's contract extension is on the horizon.

Stephen Jones does a great job ensuring will do not get into a bad cap situation.

Great job, interesting how this team has avoided cap hell recently...

It's easy when you're losing more than you're winning. It'll be much more difficult for the next few years.

I'd be interested from Adam's perspective to know just how hard this is -- people paint Stephen as some sort of genius but I would think that anyone in a position like this who took the time to understand the cap rules and applied a consistent philosophy to the form and structure of contracts would be able to pull this off.
