Update (3/3/08) -- After all of our tenders, re-signing Flozell Adams and trading Jason Ferguson, we're now $3,807,787 under the cap. We'll need about $2.2 million of cap room to sign all of our rookies, but we won't need most of that until mid-July, when we'll start signing our draft picks. We have plenty of options for easily gaining cap room if we need it, including signing Ken Hamlin to a long-term contract, restructuring Tony Romo's contract or giving Terrell Owens an extension.

Contrary to what was reported in the media, Flozell Adams' cap number this season is $3,266,666, not $3.6 million. He got a six-year deal worth $42.375 million, including a $13 million signing bonus. He has base salaries of $1 million (guaranteed) in 2008, $1 million (guaranteed) in 2009, $2.975 million in 2010 and $5.1 million in each of the final three seasons. He also has roster bonuses of $2.5 million in 2010 and $2 million in each of the final three seasons. And he has a workout bonus of $100,000 each season.

Gotta concur here. I don't even pay attention to the drivel on ESPN or NFL Network. I know in the end Adam will have the real numbers as soon as possible.

After seeing these numbers, I am coming in off the ledge. It looks like a two or three year deal to me, which is much more acceptable. Whew! Now you guys can go ahead and chew me out for doubting our fearless leader.

Thanks Adam, always good to get the right numbers. Could I ask a question on dead money this year? How much are we actually accounting for besides Ferguson number?

Thanks again.

Adam, Is there a rule preventing a player from restructuring a contract prior to playing under it for a full year? I heard someone say that one time, but never checked it out. Thanks in advance.

Our dead money total is $7,605,996 right now. Jason Ferguson and Marco Rivera each count $3.25 million, for a combined $6.5 million. The voided contracts of Julius Jones, Marion Barber and Chris Canty count a combined $883,337. The rest is all from small amounts for late-round draft picks, UDFAs and street free agents.

A rookie contract cannot be renegotiated until after two seasons of the contract.

The only limit on veterans' contracts is that it cannot be renegotiated to increase the amount of money to be paid to the player during the original terms of the contract until one year after the player's most recent contract renegotiation -- but the first renegotiation can take place at any time.

So you can give a player a raise the first time whenever you want, as long as it's not within the first two years of his rookie contract, but he would have to wait a year before getting another raise. If all you're doing is restructuring a contract (converting base salary or a roster bonus to a signing bonus, for example), you can do that whenever you want, as often as you want. And you can extend a contract at any time, as long as you don't increase the amount paid during the original length of the contract -- if it's prohibited to do that at the time.

How painful is it to still have Marco Rivera still counting over three million against our cap?? Dead cap money stinks:bang2:

The price of awarding big contracts to players over 30. Fergy's the same way, contributing one effective season out of three years here. Rivera was a complete bust.

Fortunately those two are off the books next season.

Hmmm. Any other players over 30 to whom we've awarded big contracts lately?

Just plain bad luck. Neither Fergie nor Marco had any history of injury problems before they came here.

When you sign a guy of Rivera's age to a long-term contract, you're playing with fire.

Adam, can you explain to me why it says we are 15+ million under the cap, but only have $3.8 million or so? I'm not understanding this.

Exactly right...

Hell the same thing has happened to us with older players time & time again.

Aikman
Woodson
Emmitt
Irvin
Rivera
Allen

Either they get hurt like in the instance of Aikman, Woodson, Irvin and Rivera or they start tailing off-- badly, like in the case of Emmitt and Larry Allen.

Signing players to contracts and extensions after the age of 30 is playing with fire.

I hope we don't get burned on the Flozell Adams contract.

We WERE 15 mil under the cap but that was before:

The franchising of Hamlin
The contract signed by Flozell Adams
The offers tendered to all of our restricted FA's like Canty & Barber.

$15 mill doesn't go far in todays NFL.
