How dare he think Cleveland will draft so low.
2008 NFL Mock Draft; Not Too Early
by Neil Barduson, 6/11/07
It is never too early to look at next year's draft. For the draft order I placed the teams on how I thought they would finish. I am sorry for you fans out there that I placed your team lower then you think. Remember this is the NFL, this order could be totally reversed for that matter, yet these are my predictions on how the order will look like. As far as the draft goes here are some interesting tid bits about it.
1 Seven Linebackers
2 Five USC Players
3 Only four SEC players
1. Miami Dolphins – Jake Long OT Michigan
John Beck and Ronnie Brown are the future for Miami. Their defense is old and there is no big name O-Lineman. Long and Baker will battle it out for the best tackle in America, my guess is that the 6’ 7’’ monster out of Michigan has the better ability and body. Long will only make life easier for Beck and Brown.
2. Buffalo Bills – Sam Baker OT USC
Back to back offensive tackles is fun to see. If Losman does not show more improvement Brian Brohm will be looked at for Buffalo. Buffalo also could take Glenn Dorsey here as well, but giving Baker to block for Marshawn Lynch would make him the happiest man in Buffalo.
3. Oakland Raiders – Darren McFadden* RB Arkansas
JaMarcus Russell and Darren McFadden will be a staple in the always tough AFC West for years. Oakland gets the best player in America with McFadden. He can be broken in easily with LaMont Jordan’s contract ending. Bush and McFadden would make a great duo.
4. Atlanta Falcons – Brian Brohm QB Louisville
How much patience does the Falcons organization have with Michael Vick? Even though I think the dog fighting case is way over hyped. Michael Vick is not going to lead the Falcons to a Super Bowl. Petrino would get on his knees for Arthur Blank to Brian Brohm. Brohm and Petrino know each other like a 50 year old married couple.
5. Kansas City Chiefs – Calais Campbell* DE Miami
Having bookend ends with Hali and Campbell would pay off huge dividends. Plug in Turk McBride and Tank Tyler from last years draft would create one of the best young D-Line units in the league.
6. Washington Commanders – Glenn Dorsey DT LSU
Kedric Golston and Glenn Dorsey would plug the middle and LaRon Landry and my man Sean Taylor would not allow any receivers across middle. I guess you will have to run around to the outsides.
7. Houston Texans – Kenny Phillips* S Miami
Phillips was the best player on the Hurricanes team last year which produced 1st round talents like Greg Olsen, Jon Beason, and Brandon Meriweather. Phillips has range like Ed Reed and is a sure tackler like Michael Huff. He is a for sure top ten pick.
8. Detroit Lions – Antoine Cason CB Arizona
The best Pac-10 corner sense Chris McAlister another former Arizona Wildcat. Is a four year starter against Pac-10 wide receivers and has managed to hold his own. The Lions will be looking at secondary help in next years draft to replace Dre Bly after trading him away to Denver.
9. Seattle Seahawks – Colt Brennan QB Hawaii
The time to replace Matt Hasselbeck is nearing very soon. All Colt Brennan knows how to do is throw the football, get first downs, touchdowns, and not throw interceptions. Brennan would be a fan favorite as well when you keep him on the west coast. He would have been a first round pick in 07’s draft but decided to battle it out with Brohm next year for the top QB spot.
10. Minnesota Vikings – Derrick Harvey* DE Florida
Harvey brings his best against the best. Three sacks and a fumble recovery was one of the reasons why the Gators dominated the Buckeyes. The Vikings could be looking for a new CB since Antoine Winfield has been grumbling early in the off season. But the Vikings need to set up a pass rush before they get corners. Harvey fits that bill.
11. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Mario Manningham* WR Michigan
Before Mario’s injury, he was the talk of the Big Ten. With a 19.5 yard per average and 9 TDs shows he is a force on every spot on the field. The Buc’s can replace Galloway with a very similar player in Manningham.
12. Dallas Cowboys (from Cleveland) – Sedrick Ellis DT USC
Gets production on a ridiculously talented Trojan defense. 8 tackle for losses which includes 4.5 sacks. I look for his numbers to nearly double as he is gaining more strength and quickness. The Cowboys have nobody in the middle that scares offensive coordinators, Ellis would strike fear into interior lineman.
13. St. Louis Rams – Keith Rivers LB USC
In a loaded year for linebackers in the draft. I think Rivers should be the first one off the board. He is athletic, sheds blocks well, is a side line to side line player, and most importantly he can tackle. One of the Ram’s linebackers is always nagging injuries. Rivers would be an upgrade over any linebacker they have now.
14. New York Giants – Dan Connor LB Penn State
Will finally get his due now Poz has left. He has the best instincts in the country and above average athleticism. Penn State keeps on producing linebackers day in and out. Connor would be an upgrade over Torbor.
15. Pittsburgh Steelers – Limas Sweed WR Texas
Sweed is a load to handle at 6-5’’ 220 pounds with a solid pair of mitts. He minds a lot of Roy Williams at Texas, just not as athletic. With Santonio Holmes progressing, Sweed would make the perfect compliment.
16. Philadelphia Eagles – James Laurinaitis* LB Ohio State
Laurinaitis may climb to the top of the linebacker charts if he repeats what he did in his Bronco Nagurski Trophy year. The Eagles may have the weakest linebacking crew in the league even with the addition of Spikes. Age is a concern in that area. Laurinaitis would upgrade and bring youth.
17. Tennessee Titans – Barry Richardson OT Clemson
James Davis and C.J. Spiller ran wild for a reason, which was because of the massive Barry Richardson. Reminds me of a Marcus McNeil with his nastiness. Michael Roos is showing promise and adding a bookend tackle with Richardson would give Vince Young all the time the world to throw and run. Scary.
18. Green Bay Packers – DeSean Jackson* WR Cal
A player defensive coordinators will spend countless hours to devising plans and praying for him not to have the ball in his hands. Cat quick and finds open space. Just needs to show better hands. This year Ted Ginn Jr. If the Green Bay’s offense popped Pee Wee Herman in the mouth, he would giggle. That’s how little pop the Packers offense has. Jackson would bring Brett Farve a dangerous weapon.
19. Jacksonville Jaguars – Lawrence Jackson DE USC
Very long arms and decent size will bring him sacks. Needs to live up to his potential though. It will be tough because of all the first round talent there is on USC’s defense. Jacksonville boasts one of the top defensive tackles duos this decade, but could use some help on the outsides. Spicer and Hayward are not getting any younger.
20. Arizona Cardinals – Ryan Clady* OT Boise State
Showed he was the real deal against Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl, and he was a sophomore! Secretly Clady is Ian Johnson’s best friend. The Cardinals grabbing Levi Brown this year and adding Clady would make Leinert and his gang of dangerous receivers will have them grinning from ear to ear.
21. New England Patriots (from San Francisco) – Vince Hall LB Virginia Tech
The Pats did not get their heir apparent of middle linebacker in this years draft as many thought they would. Vince Hall is stout at 6’ 240 pounds. What makes him special is his work ethic and tackling ability. Vince Hall I swear can take down grizzly bears. The Patriots will take Hall and make him into the leading tackler of the NFL.
22. Cincinnati Bengals – Rey Maualuga* LB USC
It should be interesting on how man USC players will be taken in round one. Maualuga has the physical tools to make it plus he plays with a Ray Lewis mean streak. He has to show more potential on reads and coverage and Rey will become a great punishing linebacker. Maualuga though has had some character issues for fighting and Cincinatti should stay away from those players, his potential to too good to pass up though at this spot.
23. Dallas Cowboys – James Hardy WR Indiana
A bit of a suprise for Hardy to go before talents such as Greg Carr (Florida State), Mario Urrutia (Louisville), Marcus Monk (Arkansas), and Adarius Bowman (Oklahoma State). What all of these guys have in common is 6' 4'' plus size. Hardy measures the tallest at 6' 7''. His first two seasons at Indiana, Hardy has had to play with a shaky quarterback with a shaky line and shaky running game, yet still managed to grab 10 TDs per season. That is why he gets the nod over the other guys, he can produce by himself. Dallas is looking alright on offense, but they are lacking a playmaker on offense. Owens only has two or three seasons left and will regress each one. Hardy will give the Cowboys a chain mover and an unstoppable fade route.
24. Carolina Panthers – Frank Okam DT Texas
Okam has been on the Texas line ever since I can remember. A taller tackle, hides his 330 pounds with his 6' 6'' frame. He was the best lineman on the Longhorn's line last year that produced fourth round Bryan Robinson and second rounder Tim Crowder. The Panthers have a very solid team and filled a QB need with the signing of David Carr. They can spoil themselves in next years draft on taking the best player available everytime. Okam would be in this choice and sort of fills a 'kinda' need of interior d-lineman
25. New York Jets – Tyson Jackson DE LSU
There is something in the water down in Baton Rouge, because they keep on producing NFL talent year in and out, ecspecially defensive lineman. Tyson is a hard worker and plays the run and rushes well. The Jets have a great underrated player in Shaun Ellis but he is 30 and there is age on the other sides of the ends.
26. Chicago Bears – Chad Henne QB Michigan
All the Bears need is a quarterback that can handle the ball and move the chains, Rex Grossman is not that. He is to erractice and injury prone. Chad Henne has a solid arm and is a competitor. He will not be shaken from the rough weather in Chicago due to his time playing at Ann Arbor. I really do think though Grossman will not be playing after this season.
27. New Orleans Saints – Dwight Lowery CB San Jose State
I could not believe the Saints did not address their secondary issues. Fred Thomas could be the nicest guy in the world, but he could not cover a ttwo legged dog covered in molasses. Dwight Lowery has a heart of a champion and will always work hard. I can see him tailing off though because of his weak competition he faces.
28. Denver Broncos – Harry Douglas WR Louisville
I wonder if Brian Brohm makes Harry Douglas look good, it could be the other way around. Though only six feet in stature, his release is the best in his class. Reminds me of Jerry Rice cept faster. The Broncos are solid at almost every position on the field. With Rod Smith on the wrong side of 30 and some unproven rookies, nabbing Douglas would not be a bad choice.
29. Baltimore Ravens – Jasper Brinkley LB South Carolina
Ray Lewis will go down as one of the greatest linebackers of all time and could play effectively till he is 40 years old. However, the NFL is punishing and Ray being 32, it is time for the Ravens to look for an understudy. Jasper Brinkley would make a very smart choice. Jasper had a 107 tackles patrolling the middle for the Gamecocks. He also possesses exceptional quickness for his larger size of 6’ 2’’ 262 pounds. Jasper won’t get pushed around.
30. San Diego Chargers – Chris Long DE Virginia
Long to the Chargers would be a match made in heaven. Long plays double teams in a 3-4 defense at Virginia and still made 12 tackle for losses. San Diego has a solid pair of run stuffers in Luis Castillo and Igor Olshansky, yet they would gain a pass rusher on the end with Long. Merriman and Long would at least get 25 sacks a year between them.
31. San Francisco (from Indianapolis) – Brandon Flowers CB Virginia Tech
Sure the 49ers spent $80 million on Nate Clements, but Walt Harris is in his thirties. Playing in the NFC West it is not a bad idea to have three or four good cover guys. On every great defense there is a solid shutdown corner. Virginia Tech may have the best defense in the nation, and Flowers comes tough as nails.
32. New England Patriots – Malcolm Jenkins* CB Ohio State
Asante Samuels is going to be on his way out of New England after saying he is holding out till week ten. Malcolm Jenkins has the potential to carry on the Ohio State d-back tradition; he just needs to make some more plays.
