I was lukewarm on Brockers but pretty high on Wagner at the time. Claiborne I liked as a prospect, but absolutely hated the trade. It's just fun to look back on what might have been and these guys probably would have been the picks if you believe the team. Oh well. It will be just as sweet when we win this next SB without them.

The 2012 draft has already been offset with the Cowboys nailing their #1's in 2013 and 2014 leading to the best team they've have had in years in 2014. The concern now is how to offset the losses of Murray and Scandrick. Losing McClain is a setback because he made up for the loss of Lee last season. If Lee goes down again this season the Cowboys defense could have some real issues. As for Seattle it was the 2010, 2011 and 2012 draft that made them a championship caliber team. They came up with one of the top safeties in the league in Earl Thomas in 2010 and one of the top corners in the league Richard Sherman in 2011 in the 5th round. Their franchise QB Wilson was snagged in the 3rd round in 2012. They came up with several impact players in those drafts.

Assume your competitors also nail their picks in the same years. Losing Murray and Scandrick aren't huge deals. 1) because Murray was a free agent and 2) Scandrick wasn't highly paid.

When it comes to free agency, the only thing that is important is best allocating your spending. If you compare our free agent and resigned players to other teams are we better or worse than them including players lost to injury.

I'd say we are, which means that losing Murray was not a negative at all. It's as if he wasn't even here. The window for his draft class is gone, and anyone who remains is also a free agent.

It's a simple equation

Rookies + 2nd years + 3rd years + 4th years + Free Agents = quality of your team.

If you draft the best for 4 years straight, stay healthy, and make the best of your salary cap, you will field the best team, and I think Dallas has done that here for the most part with the worst being the 2012 4th year class.

I said they weren't huge deals, and I'd say most of the board agrees with me.

Scandrick wasn't overly expensive, and thus his injury doesn't hurt the cap. We also had a great deal of depth at corner.

A good percentage of the board didn't want to re-sign Murray for more than 4 million a year.

The "IFFY" 2012 draft (which I don't think is really bad) is sandwiched between excellent to outstanding drafts of 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014 & 2015. That being said, Claiborne, Crawford, Wilber, and Hanna have been very productive as a group. The 2012 draft in my opinion, did not stink.

The draft in 2009 on the other hand, was lousy to say the least.

Jason Garrett had to do a complete overhaul of players and coaches to get the right personnel in place to not just compete for a Super Bowl this year, but in the years to come as well.

I am also under the belief that Bill Parcells taught the Jones' and the scouting department what to look for in acquiring players. Since Parcells arrived in 2003, only the 2009 and 2004 drafts have really been downright stinkers. The draft in 2009 stunk moreso than 2004.

My truly excellent to outstanding drafts since Parcells arrived are:
2003: Newman, Witten, and James
2005: Ware, Spears, Burnett, Canty, Barber, and Ratliff
2008: Jones, Jenkins, Bennett and Scandrick (and Eric Walden has thrived with other teams)
2010: Bryant and Lee
2011: Smith, Carter, Murray, and Harris
2013: Frederick, Escobar, Williams, Wilcox, and Randall
2014: Martin, Lawrence, Hitchens, Street, Gardner, and Bishop
2015: HOPEFULLY all of them

When you string excellent drafts like this form 2010-Present, Super Bowls usually are the result.

Heres my follow up since we both agree 2012 wasnt that bad. Can a draft ruin your chances for a SB if the SB is easily attainable since the league has dropped in standards and talent? Yesterdays 0-16 teams can chance to 9-7 and still make the playoffs. Can we say with the new era, the draft is slightly less needed because your road is easier?
