2014 Winter Olympics thread

I guess if we are going to throw out accomplishments, here is one: He became the second-youngest captain in the history of the NHL to win the Cup, behind Sidney Crosby who led the Pittsburgh Penguins to the championship the previous season. He scored seven goals and 29 points in the playoffs, and won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. By winning the Stanley Cup, he also became the youngest player, at 22 years old, to become a member of the Triple Gold Club (Olympic gold, Stanley Cup, World Championship).

I never said Toews wasn't a great player, all I've argued is that Sid is a deserving captain.

15 days to go till the flame lights up. let your friends and family know, we all must watch.

Blah hockey. In Canada they'd leadoff their sports news shows with highlights from an exhibition or juniour hockey game even if the Super Bowl happened that day. Then they go on and on obsessively about the composition of Canada's Olympic hockey team. Then their "top plays of the night" segment includes ever so awesome hockey "highlight material" like when a goalie lifts his glove 1 inch to make a save.

Yes, hockey is so entertaining with all those 1-0 or 2-1 games. Hockey is like bad sex - a lot of movement for very little payoff.

now now, we will revoke your citizenship if you keep that up

I would criticize the way Russia has dealt with threats towards the Olympics but I really don't want to be found dead tomorrow morning

Not a fan of hockey myself but I've seen this argument used so often about soccer and it really annoys me. Personally I would turn the argument on it's head and say that the reason I like soccer so much, and presumably hockey fans think likewise, is that every goal means something whereas in basketball it's not uncommon to score over 100 points and lose. Why then is a basket worth getting excited about?

the first sunday night of the games will be a tough one. NBC primetime telecast(also known as the tape delay games) will go head to head with the Walking dead. we must not let some boring zombie show get in the way of our olympic viewing habits.

People don't appreciate small details of the game just like in soccer; they don't know what is exciting and what is not. I know Kristen is a big Rangers fan also (so am I), so I don't really understand her argument about low scoring and boring haha.

Early round talent spotted. She has a tomboyish quality with a model physique who snowboards!

I guess the Opening Ceremonies are about to start here in a bit. Saw a funny tweet that the Russians intend to flush 12 toilets simultaneously during the ceremonies just to prove it can be done.

The opening ceremony was good but of course had nothing on our one 2 years ago ;)
