Free Agency is a good way for a club to strengthen itself without the cost of draft picks. The problem is what type of players should you be looking at in Free Agency. While adding a starting quality player in free agency opens up your draft, spending too much on them can adversely effect your long term finances and many ill advised signings can put a team in deep hole salary cap wise. With Free Agents, Ive always found it best too look at that middle tier. Guys who may not be stars, but will fortify your team, not break the bank, and may even have potential to outplay their contract. With that said here are a few guys I veiw as potentially sensible signings. Feel free to add your own players in the discussion.
-Mark Ingram, HB New Orleans
Ingram has had a poor start to his career in New Orleans, but this year has started to look the former Heisman Trophy winner. However given the limited amount of success and dwindling value of HBs he is unlikley to cash in on the market. I see him landing a 2 year 6 million dollar deal.
Jabal Sheard, DE, Cleveland.
I have Sheard listed as a DE even though he plays OLB in Cleveland. Which ks unfortunate for him because Sheard showed great promise as a strong side DE in Cleveland before they converted back to a 4-3, registering 15.5 sacks his first two years. After moving to a 3-4 he has only managed 7.5 sacks the past two years. Sheard is a one to two year contract guy who you give an opportunity to go out and earn a real payday. A move back to a 4-3 could really get his career back on track.
Kyle Wilson, CB, Jets
Odds are are will be moving on from Brandon Carr this offseason. Good news is there is a decent class of mjd tier FA CBs. Kyle Wilson is my pick out of that group right now because I think he can thrive in a Cover 2 defense, can cover slot has a wealth of talent, and wont break the bank. I think Wilson can be had on a 2 year 6 million dollar deal and offer us a bridge starter and quality subpackage player while we bring along Patmon and anyone we may draft
