IMO, this is what the FO is planning. They realize the 2018 team cannot contend unless they draft 3 starters that play well quickly. After 2 more drafts, it is 2019 team that they can contend realistically with a loaded team, assuming Dak is for real. That is because 2019 FA $s open up, for resigning key FA and signing class of 2016 draft to 2nd contracts. This is probably 'their way' of growing a sustainable winner. The 2019 projected depth chart is shown below.

2019 FAs - BJones, Bease, Irving, DLaw, Hanna, Swaim, Martin
2019 FA planning: Bease (cheaper), Irving (resign if plays well), DLaw (resign if healthy), Hanna+Swaim (replaced by Jarwin, Rico), BJone (replaced by FA or draft pick), Martin (resign)
Assuming Dlaw and Irving are kept for good passrush, they would need the 2018 and 2019 drafts to bring in: 2 starting LBs, at least 1 starting WR, 1 FS and get a decent 1-tech
Their main timing problem is the 2016 draft class becomes FAs in 2020,
so they are saving their pennies to pay for those players worth keeping out of Dak, Zeke, Jaylon, Rico, Collins.

lol, sorry Waldo, but I got a chuckle out of "free agent planning".

i am just putting down what i would do if i were the FO and i want a sustainable winner without tanking. of course, i would rather go for the kill for a few years, and then tank to reload myself.

It's getting harder and harder to tell the difference between Jerry and his off spring.

one is a wildcatter, the other is a bean counter...

i think jerry's approach brings in hardy, gregory, jaylon and perhaps dlaw
whereas steven brings in the 2017 free agent class of bell, carroll, paea

Great post, this is the world I am living in as well. At least its the only thing that seems logical to me.

that is what i am guessing. i dont agree with it as i prefer to splurge for 4-5 years before having 1-2 down years.

What if:
Draft a #1 WR in 2018.
Draft a starting LB in 2018.
Jalen better than in 2017.
Woods looks great at FS in 2018.
2018 3rd round OG ready by 2019

Keep DLaw, Irving and Martin past 2019.

What do they need in 2019 free agency and draft?

This all assumes that the Jones family doesn't have a wedding or family trip planned this time next year.

But seriously, the new head coach will hopefully have the contractually obligated authority to instill a better free agency approach next year.

Your scenario is probably one of their happy scenarios.
you are still lacking the swing tackle may need to start many games with TSmith
if our LT position is not secured, you can wave 2018 goodbye.
that is why i rather use the #1 or #2 pick on a LT who can double as LG this year.
they can probably made do with the 1tech

Draft a #1 WR in 2018 -> very possible
Draft a starting LB in 2018 - -> very possible
Jalen better than in 2017 -> likely since he sucked in the 1st half
Woods looks great at FS in 2018 -> not so sure
2018 3rd round OG ready by 2019 -> very possible

imo, they want to clear all the dead money before really spending.
it is an approach.
i dont like it, but it is an approach.
by the time you get to next year, the dead money is clear and 2018 was probably sacrificed intentionally just like 2017
i dont think they will ever cede control to a coach again

I'm not asking about 2018. My question is about 2019.

You dont have to wait to sign free agents. You could sign some of these guys on the 1 year deal just to see if they'd work out. That would be smart if what you say is true.

i think this is their draft plan:

2018 high/mid picks: WR (or FS), LB, LT, G
2019 high/mid picks: FS (or WR), LB, 1tech, SS

I'm not asking about 2018. My question is about 2019.

Oh, I bolded the key additions needed in my depth chart.
Given:
Draft a #1 WR in 2018.
Draft a starting LB in 2018.
Jalen better than in 2017.
Woods looks great at FS in 2018.
2018 3rd round OG ready by 2019

Then you need from draft/FA: Another LB (for Lee), LT, 1tech, WR2
but i dont think Woods will be great.

2019 high/mid picks: FS (or WR), LB, 1tech, SS
My question was to assume they drafted in 2018 as I described and players like Woods progressed as I described.

What do they need in 2019 assuming DLaw, Martin and Irving stay?

This team thinks they can contend. They aren't going to concede 2018. They are stubborn. They are going to go about it their way so they can tell all the naysayers they were the smartest guys in the room.

when you spend one year early, there is less money to spend later.
it seems they rather clear the dead money and be reset in the restructuring game first.
i think they made a cold-calculation that the 2018 team is not worth the risk.
now if 3 draft picks are great and starts, then they would have filled up the key weakness and the team can contend.
Of course, it would be nice to have a couple 1 year FA, but I think they are betting against themselves at this point.
if you look at my signature, that explains what i think of Stephen's approach.
