2019 depth chart and FA planning

This team thinks they can contend. They aren't going to concede 2018. They are stubborn. They are going to go about it their way so they can tell all the naysayers they were the smartest guys in the room.

oh they want to win.
but i think they are unwilling to bet on this team.
they are certainly not going to announce that.

My question was to assume they drafted in 2018 as I described and players like Woods progressed as I described.

What do they need in 2019 assuming DLaw, Martin and Irving stay?

see my other answer

You know I can't even argue against that. They sure don't act like a franchise that's trying to bet on their team. They seem to be concerned with salary cap and compensation picks.

yea, if they would not bet on the 2017 team after 13-3, there is no way they are betting on this team.

You know I have no idea what they are doing.

Their moves say a bunch of things.

You didn't add much pieces to last years team....that told me they were arrogant and overly confident in their team.
Then they let their whole secondary go and filled them with a bunch fo rookies and Nollan Carroll. That told me that ok they are just going to sit here and waste Dak and Zeke's prime years and just hope they get better from within.

I use to think they at least thought they knew what they were doing even if it was wrong or misguided. I honestly think they have no idea what they are doing and winging it.

To me:
1. the rookie DBs last year were an investment in the future. they darn well knew rookie DBs are not great for a SB run. they rolled the dice anyways. they got good players but sacrificed 2017 (along with zeke).
2. the DB move, combined with lack of highend FAs after 13-3 tells me they had a long term plan and were trying to be the patriots.
3. the long term plan is to keep the class of 2016 - which put a clock on money savings.
4. i would have prefer to splurge in 2017 and get 3-4 good years out of it before cap hell of 1-2 years. that is my personal preference for going through good and bad cycles like wall street. they were trying to be the patriots instead.
5. they plain signed the wrong FAs last year - steven admitted they screwed up.

What you said says it all. They sacrificed 2017 last year. They can't do it again in 2018. You just can't.

it is really how the bosses in their heart of hearts feel about the team.
they rolled the dice last year, they lost.
rolling the dicing could have come out great, but it did not.

this year, they are rolling the dice again.
are they going to get 3 starters right off?
if not, then the 'value' FAs we will be signing in LB and G better play adequately.

the important holes are: MLB, LB depth, G and swing OT
i think they will draft a LB, G and swing OT.
positions that need improvement are: FS, 1tech, WR
they are not going to be able to improve all these positions in 1 year.
can they get improvement to contend - possible but they are not betting major FA expenditures on it.
that is why i think they are really targeting 2019.

Them thinking we cant contend in 2018 is a bit of a stretch in my opinion. I think they know who their starters are going to be except at LG and Sam Linebacker and they plan on filling both holes in the draft and use FA to add depth and fill out the rest of the roster.

Although Sam linebacker isnt that big of an issue because its not like we play a base 43 much anyway. They are counting on Jaylon Smith to be 100% ready and take over for Hitch on passing downs. Thats why in my opinion our first rd pick will most likely be a WR (So Dez will be let go in 2019) or LG... maybe safety if they want to move up and draft Derwin James.

People underestimate special teams play....our ST players are getting poached.
It's lower on my priorities but still worth recognizing

we have too many needs due to vacancy and health: LT (Smith), WR, MLB, WLB (Lee), 1tech, G
we can get by with 1 tech, but 2 LBs are needed and the MLB does have pass defense responsibilities also.
WR and FS need to be improved.
the LT situation must be fixed or 2018 is toast.

no one knows if the 2018 team can contend or not until the draft happens and the games begin, but i dont see them making financial bets on the team.

How about some nice organic butter
