Since McClay was given even more influence in the draft process following the team's subpar (and controversial) 2017 draft, the Cowboys have been among the best drafters in the NFL. During that time, they have landed players like Leighton Vander Esch, Connor Williams, Michael Gallup, Dorance Armstrong, Dalton Schultz, and Cedrick Wilson (2018), Connor McGovern and Tony Pollard (2019), CeeDee Lamb, Trevon Diggs, Neville Gallimore, and Tyler Biadasz (2020), Micah Parsons, Osa Odighizuwa, Quinton Bohanna, and Israel Mukuamu (2021), and Tyler Smith, Sam Williams, Jake Ferguson, DaRon Bland, and Damone Clark (2022). That's half of the team's expected starters in 2023, as well as five more players who were previously starters but moved onto other teams.

All of which is to say there's a reason why, when McClay speaks in the draft room, what he says carries a lot of sway. So it should not be surprising that when the team was on the clock with the No. 26 overall pick, McClay was able to bring Cowboys brass along to the selection of Michigan defensive tackle Mazi Smith, whom the team was considering alongside an offensive guard (rumored to be Syracuse's Matthew Bergeron, who was eventually drafted at No. 38 by the Atlanta Falcons).

lol, yeah McClay can draft. There's no real doubt there. Crazy how people are still questioning this.

We lack in FA/Trades

HOMERLAND at its finest.............with the exception of Diggs and Parsons and CD who is not an elite WR but a lot of average so far.
Have no worries we got some dog teams coming up so our GM and his YES MEN (Will is one of many) will shine once again!!!

Mazi played better in his last game than he has played all year. I looks like he is started to catch up a bit. I didn't expect much from him in 2023 so he is about where I expected him to be.

Schoonmaker missed most of training camp so he got behind and honestly, he never had a shot at replacing Ferguson as TE1. But go back and look at Schultz's first 2 years and you see he did nothing either. I never liked this pick, he reminds of a David LaFluer, but I think he needs more time before was can assess the pick.

Overshown got hurt or I think he might have made an impact this year.

Fehoko is moving to DT from DE. I am surprised he hasn't had any playing time but if someone on the DL gets hurt I expect we will see more of him. He is a project. I didn't like this pick either, but let's see how he develops.

Asim Richards was drafted for depth. He was never going to play if the top 5 OL were healthy as they are now.

I will never understand why the Cowboys traded up to pick Eric Scott and why they keep him on the roster sacrificing Jabril Cox and Devin Harper in the process. In the preseason games he looked slow, and lacking of makeup quickness. Perhaps he will prove me wrong next year.

Deuce Vaughn was a nice story pick, but he looks too slow for the NFL. He cannot be a typical RB, he is a gimmick player. But can they afford to keep him active every week? If Pollard or Dowdle get hurt, Vaughn is not going to replace them effectively.

There was no expectation that Jalen Brooks would contribute this year as a 7th round pick. In fact if you get anything out of your day 3 picks it is a bonus

In the meantime we got some production out of TJ Bass, Hunter Luepke and Tyrus Wheat. Isaiah Land is another guy they could have kept but chose Eric Scott and Deuce Vaughn instead.

You have to remember, the roster was pretty good before we drafted any of these guys so there was never a chance that any of them were make an impact right away.

McClay has killed it over the years, the disrespect....just wow.
You get the respect when you actually get results on the field. For all this great drafting what has it done for us? We haven't even been to a conference title game this century.

this team is not deep in talent. there are 12 UDFAs. not saying they are bad but you are not going to find top talent in UDFA. you find good, some contribution, etc. but stars are far and few in between, but that's 22% of the team. then there is 8 2023 draftees who are not contributing. that's 20 out of 53. so 38% now who really isn't that good.
Yet in the last 3 years they’re 28-12. This blows your half hearted troll attempt out of the water. They have the talent. The culture is the #1 issue and that starts at the top as we all know.

when you are drafting at the bottom of each round the expecation is that you get players that are likely about a round of talent below where they are (in the early rounds - start to normalize later)

We had a very good roster to begin with so a lot of the guys we picked up will just take some time to develop, cant write them off 6 games into a season...
Kudos’ for the voice of reason.

so what? they have a 1-2 record in the playoffs. none of the 12 are all pros or made probowl. 8 draftees this year are MIA. that's 20. that's 37% of the team.

so yeah, 28-12 is meaningless. this team is not deep in talent. seemingly not that good in draft as much as everyone wants to claim.

How is that MClays fault? That’s a product of poor coaching
