2024 "Tunnel Of Darkness" Season Over (Cowboyswire)

Sounds much like Aaron Rodgers Darkness retreat Lol. That was our season.

Whoever is sitting on their couch eating Fritos on August 20th ought to be enough to save the day at DT.

Jerry and kid have got this.

Sounds like I wrote this article. Based on the offseason, and a quick review of the roster, it was obvious the Cowboys were going to struggle in 2024. But the question I continue to ask is why? After the beating at the hands of the Packers I thought the plan for Dallas to step up was clear. They needed to get a running game and stop the run. Free agency had several top DTs available and a bunch of good running backs, none of whom got that much money really. So why did Jerry, after saying "all in", sit out the offseason basically signing only Kendricks while allowing a bunch of his own free agents to walk? I find it hard to believe he really believed the Cowboys were a better team after losing so many players.

Was is just to sandbag McCarthy in contract talks? I am certain it had nothing to do with the CAP. He could have re-signed CeeDee at any time and saved a bunch of CAP space. Why did he let CeeDee's contract wait until after training camp? Why did he wait to extend Dak? It's not like he made out better for waiting. He gave both players top dollar, and Dak more than he could ever earn with his play on the field.

I think the 2023 Cowboys were as close to getting to the NFCC game as they have been in a while. The areas of improvement were clear. Had Jerry made a commitment to fixing those two areas the Cowboys would have had a chance to get back this year - if not for the unpredictable injuries.

Now the Cowboys are at least 2 years away from becoming a contender again.

You think that was bad, another "all-in" off season from the FO and next season will be more miserable and a year from now we will be sitting on a top 5 pick in the draft.
Which will be promptly traded for a WR3

When you’re trying to figure out what was actually running through their heads, with Jerry being as vindictive as he is, there very well could be something to that theory. The kid seems to want to save a buck way more than he wants to actually win so paying two coaches was never something he would push for.

Agree that given their strategy, they are two really good drafts away from getting back to where they were two years ago, but then where is Prescott physically at that point?

Jerry had his last chance in 21-23 and he blew it by listening to his cheap kid who didn’t want to sign a guy like Wagner so they didn’t have cap problems around now….yet all they do is moan about the cap.

interesting that you mention Drafts. the cowboys strategy of being Pseudo competitive is based on drafting enough good players to keep them in the game.
two bad drafts in a row and the strategy falls apart.

great insights....Jerry the ever marketing and saleman, milked the attention for CD and Dak's contracts. that was the point. most companies, businesses have to do two things, increase sales and control costs. the NFL has a built in cost control. to Jerry and company, who don't care about championships, they don't care who gets the money. irrelevant, given they have to meet a minimum cap floor and stay below the cap ceiling. we were 28th in cap, meaning we had the 6th highest cap space. that puts us closer to cap floor than cap ceiling. we were 27th in dead cap space, meaning that we keep players to the end of contracts so that we don't have to deal with dead cap space and pay twice for a position. we were 16th in cash spending, up from 29th after CD and Dak contracts.

this had been the trend for several years. in 23, we were 17th in cap spend, 10th in available cap space, 26th in dead cap.

jerry is the salesman, so his "all in comment" was in the moment, without actual intention to do anything. they took a lot of risks, inserting two rookies into the OL, not adding DTs, safties and going with Zeke (never understood that one, but I have a theory). and they would do damage control. I don't think jerry expected it to be as bad in the middle of the season, he was feeling the heat and getting defensive and was jumping up and down with the little run against teams worse than us at the end of the season, to make them pseudo competitive and give him ammunition to move forward as he always did.

I don't think he was sanbagging MM. it just happened that MM was the coach, at the time. similar thing happened with Garrett.

I think the Cowboys need to detach from Dak. His contract is not justified by his play on the field. He's good, but not $60 million good. Now that contract is an Albatross. I like what the Eagles are doing, although they overpaid Hurts. Still they structured his deal so he is never more than 15% of their CAP spend - until his contract expires. Then they have a problem but they have created a 6 year window of opportunity to win 1 or more SBs.

The Cowboys already ruined Dak. At this point, they should accept their mistake, take the CAP consequences and get him off their books by 2027.

Astoundingly accurate echo for many fans! Maybe because it's obvious?

"The mess of a year couldn't have been a surprise to those paying attention. It began with a disaster of an offseason where the front office decided it was better to wait and sign their best players to extensions until training camp. That mistake was compounded by the team deciding to not participate in free agency while allowing many of their own free agents to walk out the door."

"It was a disappointing offseason that was made worse by Jerry Jones' "all-in" comments. Savvy fans knew better than to believe the Cowboys were going to spend money and be aggressive in acquiring talent since it would've signaled a major change in organizational philosophy, but it was something that followed the team around for months leading up to the regular season."

Sound familiar?

The season is over, sure. But not the tunnel of darkness.

And there is no bright light to be seen at the end of it.

exactly whats the difference? Jerry's all in comments ? this is a cowboy fans reality with Jerry. I love the AI Jerry presser on Mccarthy and and his AI presser on Steven being the only one dumber than him. They may be AI but they are spot on
do you have a link to AI pressers?
