It changed drastically . Texas would literally get out recruited by Alabama, Georgia and Oklahoma on a consistant basis.
They had plenty; just did not have the coaching
the number of Texas players drafted have not changed greatly for years
ups and downs but not a lot of change
it all comes down to the School being committed to winning and getting the top coaches. That is the formula everywhere
texas could not for one reason or another get the coach they needed

Rivals has Oregon with the top 2025 class (and Georgia with the top one in 2024)
Texas is number 2...splitting hair though.
Same with ESPN recruiting rankings

Really, the top 3 classes are often interchangeable
The teams are usually Georgia, Texas, Alabama, Ohio State and now Oregon

247 has Texas with the top for 2025 an I bet that class gets even better.

Texas has re-entered the era where they will be Top 5 in recruiting almost every year.

In the Mack Brown era (1998-2013) they were routinely in this zone.

In those16 years they were incredibly and consistently strong:
  • 13 times, finished ranked in the top 25
  • 11 times finished ranked in the top 15
  • 7 times in the top 6
  • 2 national Title games
  • 1 National Title
Sark's Texas will match this if he sticks around a while.

its all about coaching. One thing very different in the modern age; at least since the 90's I believe is that now when a HC is recruiting for his staff their being able to recruit is a primary requirement. Before then the HC was the primary recruiter. Not anymore. He could often be the 'closer' but the footwork and preparation are now done by the assistant coaches and coordinators. and more and more I see that the talent will often flow to them when they move on; especially DC's and OC's. And now with the portal, that is even more critical.

AND the top coaches at Texas got talent elsewhere. The SEC has changed nothing about the talent level of Texas
Think again. They announced their SEC move in summer of 2021. So, the first impact was on the 2022 recruiting class. You can clearly see the boost in their recruiting coincided with their SEC announcement.

Texas recruiting rankings since 2020

2020 14th
2021 16th
2022 5th
2023. 3rd
2024 3rd

as usual the SEC homers act like defense lawyers with a guilty client.
Go over the last ten years or so and then correlate with the HC and you will find your vaunted SEC claims dust in the wind.
It amuses me that you think what conference a team plays in matters all that much to the top level players.
ITs all about the coaching and staff and facilities and so on.

It makes no sense to be the least aware person in the thread about your own team.
UT classes: (247)
2015: 10
2016: 6
2017: 26 --hired Herman so partial class.
2018: 3
2019: 3
2020: 9
2021: 15 --hired Sark so partial class.
2022: 5
2023: 3
2024: 5
2025: 1

2 classes outside the top 10 since 2014.
UT produced monster recruiting throughout most of the 2000s.
Aside from blips for coaching changes they were top 10 classes.
And they haven't had a single 4 year stretch where they stayed outside the top 3.
OU HAS NOT recruited that well since Switzer.

Georgia elite run is more like 7 years(Smart's full classes) and Bama was outstanding under Saban so bested everyone; but UT was simply mediocre in the Big 12 with BY FAR the best recruiting in that conference.
UT was already richer and making more money than any SEC school before they ever agreed to join.
Yet they won Big 12 titles in 2023 on the way out and not before that until you go all the way back to 2009. Insane underachievement.

Hiring Charlie Strong as a Florida guy to come into Austin was nuts then Herman was a snake oil guy that recruited but didn't know any schematic football. Guy can't even win at Florida Atlantic.

For over a decade UT was the running example you could recruit well and be mediocre. Sark has been able to change that largely by hiring the best possible assistants.
UT is famous for telling future NFL QBs they wanted them to play Safety or Linebacker. Andrew Luck, RG3, Manziel among the legends.

more complete nonsense and the stupidest proof of all time trying to argue one year, 2021 with a new coach and entire recruiting staff as the low bar and blame that on being in the big 12 lol.
good lord you are goofy.
Texas was landing top 5 classes routinely as a Big 12 member for 25 years even with some complete duds as coaches.

You are better at name calling than debate...... and insults is about all you got. The FACT is that Texas was irrelevant until Sarkiasian and the SEC arrived. Not one CFP appearance until 2023. They were a fading brand and a punchline. lol

https://athlonsports.com/college-football/fans-are-roasting-sec-following-oklahomas-loss-navy

But the loss was also taken as a reality check for the mighty SEC, as many pundits have lamented the fact that more teams from the conference were not placed in the College Football Playoff. One such team was Alabama, whose sad-sack, 24-3 loss to Oklahoma was the main reason the Tide did not have a CFP spot.

The SEC is now 2-2 in bowl games, with wins by Florida and Texas and Oklahoma joining Tennessee (which was routed, 42-17, in the CFP) as bowl losers.

We arent debating. You are saying complete nonsense.
If you had a single valid point, I'd be glad to grant it and discuss.

But Bama lost to a team 24-3 that just got beat by Navy!!!
You do not have a single point, and the Bama bias is driving you to goofy town.

No one has said there is a better football conference than the SEC. No one.
But that does NOT mean it will be the best every year or was THIS year.
It does not mean it will be the best when this NIL and revenue sharing shakes out and it does not mean there are anywhere NEAR 16 good SEC teams.
All those points are legitimately debatable.

I agree. This isn't a debate. I literally posted class rankings by Rivals.com to show the ascension of Texas recruiting and you get defensive and start insulting me. You have no facts or counterpoints to disprove what I'm saying.

Your hatred of Alabama is laughable. Nobody cares. They were ranked 11th in the final CFP and deserved a spot.

Sorry. I just got back to this thread.

Is there really someone arguing that Alabama who was 9-3 and had really BAD losses to both Vanderbilt and Oklahoma DESERVED a playoff spot?

Hahahahahahahhahahaha

They finished 11th in the final CFP poll and beat UGA....... something Texas couldn't do ....... but that's not what we are arguing about. Go back to sleep.
