A caller in to the Hardline on 1310 the Ticket claims he has run the numbers on this season, and the defense has yielded a first down on 3rd & 10+ 24 times.

Can anyone confirm this?

Keep in mind that this does not include last year's totals when the team routinely caved on 3rd & 10+ as well.

If true it is a disgusting statistic.

More than disgusting it is baffling that the GREAT Defensive Mr Fix it hasnt remedied that problem.

Just baffling, confusing.... and, yeah, uh.... disgusting..

Mr. Fix it can't cover or rush the passer or tackle the WR before they pass the 1st down market.

He can quit calling vanilla coverages on 3rd and long though.

We are not pressuring the QB, not tackling well, and not stopping opponents on 3rd & long. IMO that is why we are losing games, our defense fades when we need it most.

I really dont get this "not pressuring the quarterback" nonsense. It's like you guys are watching a completely different game than me. No, we arent getting as many sacks as last year, or other pressure defenses in the league, but we have consistent pressure.

Yesterday, we got pressure the entire game, causing Rivers to have to step up. The problem was we didn't adjust and leave someone at home in the middle of the field. Once again, that falls on Wade.

The funniest part about our 3rd down defense is that as the distance increases, the likelihood of converting for our opponents increases. Now I do not have the specifics but just from watching that is at least what it seems like.

When this defense is given a situation like 3rd down and 7 or less, we tend to play very aggressive and it typically works in our favor. Once that 3rd down distance increases to 8 or 9+ we decide to play incredibly passive, rush 4, and drop in a zone and give up an easy first down.

This happened AGAIN in yesterdays game. Right after Ware went down, it was 3rd and 7, then the chargers commit a the false start and everyone probably got all excited bc the situation now became a 3rd and long (12), only to see our defense give up a 35+ yard pass play...

This is the absolute most frustrating thing about being a dallas cowboy fan if you ask me....:bang2: :banghead: :bang2: :banghead: :bang2: :banghead:

I know just from watching our defensive formation, pre snap, whether or not we will stop the offense from converting the 1st down...at least most of the time

I believe this. I keep asking myself each week how our opponents can pick up these huge 3rd down penalties!!

BINGO!!!

Why the hell can't we do something like the Browns did to the Steelers on third and long last Thursday night?

but if we do blitz, we never get to the qb this year it seems.

Close.

Our defense fades because we continually extends opponents drives. Instead of 3rd and a stoppage forcing a punt we allow a 1st down and defense plays an extra 3 plays or more.

2 per game. Sounds too low.

Not shocking when you play 12 yard cushions though.

Realistically, that number could be a lot higher. There are a few plays where Dallas just barely stopped the runner before he got the 1st down.

This sounds about right and that is bad because how many times does a team get into a 3rd and 10 situation during a game. Not many because you have to expect that a team will get some yards on 1st and 2nd down unless there is a penalty. I would like to see the stats when it is 3rd and 5 or more. It is probably around 50-60 times I bet. This drives me nuts and it is why our offense always starts out in poor field position. I can't count how many times this year where a team has had 3rd and 5 or more on their own 25-30 yard line and we give up a 1st and they either score or we give up 20 more yards and they cross midfield and then they punt to us. Then we start out at either the 20 yard line or less. It doesn't help the offense at all.
