Pretty much the title, after watching some wildcard games this weekend i noticed how many small-intermediate catches went for big chunks. So i went and checked and our top rated offense is near the bottom in that.
https://scores.nbcsports.com/fb/tmleaders.asp?type=Receiving&range=NFL&rank=231

Is this the Receivers fault, routes, scheme, qb? Ive been noticing almost every game Dak has to make tight window throws or has to checkdown (and then the guy gets immediately blasted) while i constantly see the opposing team have a wide open receiver. Whats interesting is that Pollard seems to be our YAC guy and yet i barely see him get played as a receiver.

Thoughts?

This team. For years has stopped what works to try new things. Its a big reason why they keep failing. They lined up Pollard and had him run a route deep once this year. It went for a 60 yard TD. Havent done it since. Its like they put things on tape for the other team to think about, but never do it again. Its odd

QB . . . He is terrible at timing based throws like crossing routes and slants and prefers routes that have the WR come back to him. The WRs are getting blasted because He stares down his WRs which is why Safeties are intercepting all His Passes

Wrs each run a certain route and many times WRs are open but either Dak does not see them or refuse to even attempt this throws

This is the weakness in Daks game but sadly it is huge because this limitation allows the defense to contain him and His Wrs

We don’t have those type of weapon besides Ceedee and Pollard. Zeke ain’t making anybody miss and neither does Schultz. Brown isn’t that type of wr. And the corners are quickest than Gallup. Maybe next year when we get OBJ things will be different because we losing Pollard

I put most of it on Dak and I like him.

Even the simplest dump off to the RB - the RB many times has to turn back for the ball and contort his body to make a catch. THEN get set - that allows the D to be on him like flys on a turd. Crossing routes turn into sliding catches. But also all the damn 3 yard outs to Schutlz and curl routes don't do us any favors.

If this idiocy is true....how is Ceedee top 10 in yac?

Combination of a lot of things to be honest, tough to pinpoint just one area. Noah Brown was our #2 receiver for a heavy chunk of the season, not exactly a YAC monster. Our TEs are a heavy piece of our passing attack and while I like our guys at the position we dont exactly have a Kelce caliber player on the roster. We have a QB who I believe throws a very catchable ball and has the completion % year after year to prove that, but doesn't have the pinpoint accuracy of a top QB. We see many of Daks passes be just a little high, behind, etc. the majority of which are in the zone to be caught, but wont allow a receiver to catch in stride. Even his deep balls seem to high air time lob passes. I still dont understand how Dak is so good at throwing the deep ball, because it typically isnt a very pretty ball, but it allows our guys to come down with it at a really good rate, just not with consistent yards after catch.

Then scheme wise this offense really takes a pretty conservative approach...mostly. Everything is based on the run game, even though the Cowboys dont always stick with it. The passing game seems to be based on more a vertical route approach, which is what can get isolation on the inside guys opening up the underneath stuff for your TEs and slot receiver.

Sighhhh……and people wonder why I have wanted this offense gone since Romo. It has nothing to do with Moore the person….it’s the offense. Can’t have YAC when you are coming back to the football all the time. Anyone gander at NY’s crossing routes yesterday? How about Barclay in the flat? Wide open folks…..

All of this points to one Culprit

I think it’s pretty common knowledge our WR corp is awful.

Near the bottom of the league in deep ration per target and YAC.

If you watch every one of our games you will see we have zero speed on offense. We have witten 2.0 in schultz who just falls down. Thats y when ppl crap on Dak i laugh because dak isnt throwing screens or slants and guys are takin it to the house.

Volume mostly. Lamb is up there is total YAC yardage, but break it down by YAC/reception and it really isn't that pretty. On 13 catches of 20 yards or more Lamb has just 38 YAC yards, so he isn't catching them short and breaking them for long gains, nor are long passes being caught in stride, but typically contested catches. Where Lamb is at his best is in the slot, but he is getting 4.4 YAC per catch there. Not awful, but not great either, he is in the same company as Amon-Ra St Brown and Christian Kirk, neither a bad slot receiver. Even Tyreek Hill has similar in the slot to be fair, but has better numbers overall.

Is that a Dak issue? A Kellen issue? A Lamb issue? Or is even using the word issue wrong altogether? It may just be a matter of YAC is going to be limited on how this team as a whole plays football?

I read something a few weeks ago indicating Tolbert was the first WR we drafted in like 20 years with a sub 4.5 combine 40.

Why…

https://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2021/passing_advanced.htm

Last year Prescott had 2024 yards go for after the catch, good for 8th in the league. Mahomes was just under 2700 at first fwiw.

Kansas City lost Hill, but still was able to be #1 in the league with 2,797 yards after the catch this year.
Dallas lost Cooper and Wilson and dropped to ~1639 yards and 24th in the league.

I think it's a mix of talent and play calling.
Losing Cooper hurt, and not having an truly experienced/innovative OC leads to this.
