Might be 50/50 for other teams, but since Jimmy, it stinks.

In another post, I mentioned the hit rate on 2nd round picks is about 50%. So, let's see how the Cowboys have done in the 2nd round during the Jones era:

Sounds like we need to trade all our draft picks for two 1st rounders ")

The Cowboys standard offensive lineup for most of the Garrett era includes 2 starting wide receivers and 2 starting tight ends. The fullback is NOT a starter in most games. Cowboys FB Keith Smith only started 4 games in the last 2 seasons. WR Cole Beasley started 10 games. The other 18 games were started by the TE2. I think you are confusing "starting" with meaning he starts instead of Witten, instead of being the starting TE2.

And the "generosity" only really comes into play for Escobar when Hanna was hurt in 2016. If Hanna was healthy in 2016, Beasley and Escobar would not have as many "starts." Hanna is the Cowboys 2nd starting TE, and has been for years - ever since Martellus Bennett and John Phillips left.

The reason Escobar couldn't break into a regular starting role was his inability to block. That is the same thing that will keep Rico Gathers on the bench unless he learns how to block well. It is also a reason that even though he ranked about 8th in catches last year, Witten still received a Pro Bowl nod. Blocking as a TE matters. And having a 2nd starting TE who blocks is key to the Cowboys run offense.

I know what starting means and you're overthinking my comment.

Great list.

Kevin Burnett was a significant player. Starts is very misleading.
Significant for a 2nd round pick is questionable.

In the same notion Id argue Lee has been worth the risk thus far even if he hasn't met Jumbos 100 game measurement. This is all subjective anyway but Id agree in theory with Jumbos overall assessment. I thought Carter could have had more starts for us. He was turning into a decent starter but a Cap casualty which adds in another factor this era like Hitchens this year which skews this overall theory if they must start 100 games for us.

The issue I take with 2nd round in recent years is its become this injury or problem player risk on a player who otherwise would have been a 1st round. It's too high of risk for a team desperately needing sound picks to rebuild. 2nd round risk like we've been taking should be for teams with sound teams wanting to take a shot at hitting on an elite talent that fell. And if he misses doesn't set back or hinder the team.

His knee scared them off from re-signing him. He actually had a pretty good career when he left here.

He is expected to go top 10-12.
I would LOVE them to be wrong about that.

I think he is going to fall due to his size. I don't doubt that he is a good player. But if you guys think Sean Lee gets injured a lot, wait for Roquan to play behind a small line. They will break him into pieces.

Aside from Jimmy and Bill you can't really credit or blame the coaches for who was drafted that would be on the Jones boys

It certainly appears like the Cowboys finally figured out how to spend their 2nd round picks a lot better.

Lesson 1. Don't draft a TE in the 2nd round. Unless it's a generational talent. We do better in 3rd and later.
Lesson 2. Take the best player on your board except TE. Usually a decent talent will slip but may not be at position of need. Don't draft for need or anymore injured players.

2004 still pisses me off. We were lining up with Troy Hambrick and Steven Jackson was there for the taking, but we had to get cute and trade down. Julius was great for half a season or so. SJax was the biggest loser, he would've been awesome here.

LB has been the most solid for us in the 2nd it looks.

A good year for LB's in this draft too. Oooh and we need some Bad. Probably 2.

Not terrible, not great. Wonder how that compares with other NFL teams. Since about 50% of second rounders start, probably on par

If you can find the time, go back and get all of the 2nd rd picks under Tex Schram and Tom Landry. Would love to see how they did in their 29 years together.

That wouldn't be a fair comparison. The NFL had fewer teams then, so players picked in the 2nd round would be 1st round picks today - even if picked at the same draft location.

The NFL had 14 teams in the 60's, and 26 teams for much of the 70's after adding the 10 AFL teams, and also the Dolphins and Saints in 1970. They expanded to 28 teams in 1977 (Seahawks and Buccaneers). The league expanded to 30 teams in 1995 (Panthers and Jaguars, and then 32 teams in 2001 (Browns and Texans).

No FA either. Players stayed with their teams. Few left for greener pastures because none were green and the game meant as much as the "green"
