This. We probably have better 3-4 style linebackers than 4-3 style. In the 4-3 you only need 2 TRUE linebackers (outside linebackers are basically the DE's in our 4-3).

I am hoping we do which to a 3-4. I hope we don't hand the new guy Ebeflus playbook lol

I think it'll be a 4-3- or 5-man line defense. My opinion.

5 man is what pretty much all “3-4” teams use. The discussion about defensive schemes should really be even vs odd fronts and about gap responsibilities.

Osa and Clark at DE? WIlliams in the middle. Or will Clowney play DE(assuming we resign him). EZE at OLB? Justin Houston OLB? Or would Overshown be an OLB?

I’ve said many times that a 3–4 is the way to go, and hopefully they finally make the switch. We can start by not re-signing Clowney and instead transitioning Ezeiraku into a 3–4 linebacker. After watching plenty of BC’s breakdowns, it’s clear they already used him more like a pass‑rushing linebacker than a true defensive end.

The next step is the draft. We should use our first pick on Sonny Styles, then add another linebacker through free agency—someone like Quay Walker or Quincy Williams. That approach gives us speed, flexibility, and depth without having to spend big on a high‑priced edge rusher like Hendrickson.

The biggest advantage of the 3–4 is how much harder it makes life for opposing quarterbacks. It allows for better coverage disguise, more creative pressure packages, and far more uncertainty about where the blitz is coming from. With the right personnel, this defense could be faster, more aggressive, and much tougher to prepare for week to week.

All teams play multiple fronts.

Nickel is by default a 4 man line.

Quinnen Williams played in a 3-4 for part of his time with the Jets.

Osa played 3-4 DE in college.

Yeah.

We need a defense that is dynamics & can do anything.

Having 3 stud Days is hope we do more of those 5 man front.

A 5/2 can be just as useful as a 4-3.

We just need a lot of good players on defense. We have 3 defensive tackles and not a lot after that.

We dont have 2 decent LB’s. Now we’re gonna need 4 starters?

It’s not the 90’s anymore, most of this discussion is wildly outdated. We won’t be in a base 3-4 OR 4-3 anymore than 30% of the time. You need 5 DB’s on the field the vast majority of the time in the modern NFL or you’re going to get cooked. Having versatile LB’s and S’s is key, something we’ve been SEVERELY lacking for a few years.

Align/call the front 4 whatever you want, but it’s not going to be a traditional 3-4 of the past. 5-1-5, 3-3-5, 4-2-5…they all end up in virtually the same thing after the snap (depending on if/when a blitz happens), it’s really just a matter of giving the offense different looks. And as others have said, what gaps you have your front 4 attacking.

I would think most NFL DC's now have a nickle base defense, that slot CB is on the field 80% i would guess. but i could be wrong.

He was with Fangio in Denver as well. Believe Vic Fangio was running a 3-4 back then.

If it was me, I would definitely favor the 3-4 with what we have on the d-line and OLB is exactly where Eze would do better not having to take on 300lb lineman right off every snap.

Clowney and Fowler both played OLB in 3-4 schemes in the past assuming we resign any of those 2. Overshown could be one of the ILB and if we could draft David Bailey, he would fit on the opposite OLB side. Sonny Styles could go inside as well with agent 0. Houston can play OLB as well.

We would fix our front 7 faster with a 3-4 than a 4-3 and we'd also save money.

Now would be the time, we are not solid at anywhere except maybe the middle now but even that is up in the air. Build it from here the only way to go is up which ever way we go.
