They are going to be cutting players that aren't scrubs. This is their best roster in decades.
We say that every year....they can't cut this guy or that guy....and they do...and nothing happens. They make it to the PS. Only rarely does it not happen.

For example, everyone has been projecting we keep 6 WRs. That means the 6th is either Simi Fehoko or Jalen Brooks. Is it really the end of the world if we lose one or both of them? We still have guys like Dennis Houston, Jalen Moreno-Cropper, Dontario Drummond and even Durden for next year. Likelihood is that if we let Fehoko and Brooks go that one of them still makes the PS. It isn't a big deal.

On the OL...we are going to keep 9 most likely. After the starting 5, I'd keep Richards for sure. Ball has actually played well at G. Probably keeping Farniok since he is the only real C backup. After that, does it really matter that much if we risk Waletzko, Edoga, Bostick, Hoffman, etc? Some of those guys will be back on the PS.lly be bad if we

At LB...we have Vander Esch and Clark as starters. Cox and Harper probably the backups. Would it really be awful if we let a guy like Jefferson go? We can stash some similar guys on PS in case of injury. Possibly including Land, unless they count him as DE.

At corner, we have Diggs, Gilmore, Bland, Lewis, and Eric Scott. Can we really not afford to lose a Joseph, or a Wright?

Safety, I know a lot want to keep Juanyeh Thomas, who looked good wk 1 of preseason but like crap in week 2. But we have Hooke, Wilson, Kearse, Bell, and Mukuamu before even thinking about Thomas.

So there are at least 5 guys that are easily cuttable.

Game day roster is not 53, its 46
The 3rd QB DOES take a spot on the 53 man total roster but NOT on the 46 man game day roster....so you can now have 47 active of yr 53 instead of 46
I quoted from the rule itself.... Im not a rules expert, but what I posted is from the rule itself.

Just so we are clear, compared to the old 3rd QB rule that expired years ago

"The rule also has one other new caveat: A player has to be on the 53-man roster to be eligible to be named the inactive third quarterback on game day. In other words, a team may not use the relatively new practice-squad elevation option to line up an emergency quarterback."

So
  • 53 man roster
  • 48 active and 5 designated inactive on game day
  • Now, a QB, if one of the designated inactive players, can be used in a game-day emergency.
Wiki definition is confusing (and wrong) because they say "active game day 53 man roster"...and there is no such thing.

The third quarterback has to be on a team's 53-player roster for the regular season.
On gamedays, the third QB will be inactive for the 46-player squad.
But if he has to enter the game because both QB1 and QB2 are injured or suspended, QB3 becomes eligible to play - and does not count against the 46-player squad.
And I believe that neither the QB1 or QB2 can reenter the game in that case.

So now, unlike the old rule. If the doctor gives them the "ok", they can re-enter the game.
The key is they have to be out, due to the doctor's decision, not due to the coach's decision.

If they are medically cleared to return to the game, the emergency QB (QB3) must be removed from the contest (only to return if the first two QBs are again made unavailable.

It was hard to do the 53 with 2qbs. I take it that they now will have 3 qbs on the 53 with the Lance acquisition.
Same thing they would have done if the draft had fallen with the QB they were interested in still there at their pick. One less overhyped by this board won’t be on initial 63 and will most likely make it to the practice squad anyway!

It's just too bad we made the trade so late that he'll get no PS snaps.
That is the only part of this trade I don’t like. I wish we got him in April or May and he had 6 months to get acclimated before the season started and got some preseason reps in. But it is what it is.

I was thinking the same thing. I was using that extra spot to keep Isiah Land or Juanyeh Thomas on my roster projections. Lance being here is awesome but he's going to cost someone else a gig on the 53.
is Thomas the one that was running his mouth in the first PS game that cost the 15yard penalty and 1st down on a play he had no effect on?

If so- no loss there- we specialize in stupid players!

I really wish Durden’s first name was Tyler.

The first rule of practice squad is, you do not talk about Practice Squad.
The second rule of practice squad is, YOU DO NOT TALK ABOUT PRACTICE SQUAD

yeah, its going to be tough. I wonder the cowboys hope/plan is to move lance to #2 spot. when somebody in midseason is eligible to move to 53 (I am not sure about that).

Yes. To my understanding the 3rd QB doesn't count as a roster spot now.

Plus he can't play in the first 3 quarters unless both QBs are injured. Not sure if he can come in in the 4th for mop up duty without an injury though?

Big Mike: "Hmm, so how many QBs are we gonna have in the 53?“
Jerry: "Yes!“
