My wife and I are trying to free up some space in the living room and would like to purchase one of those CD players that you can put 300 to 500 CDs in. This way we can just pack the CD holders and get rid of the shelving unit that is taking a lot of space.

My question is two fold. One, do any of you have/had one of these and do they have any drawbacks. Two, if you were to recommend one, which one would it be.

Preferably it would be one which allows us to organize our CDs by genre or other kind of organizing system so we can access specific CDs relatively quickly. We are willing to spend around $300.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I used to have one of those 6 cd loaders and when it crapped out I had to dismantle it to get my cd's out of it. :laugh2:

I'm afraid I can't help either. The thought of having a cd player is almost foreign to me in these, the days of the MP3. Can you use itunes or an MP3 player and hook your computer to your speakers? That just seems so much easier to me.

I like the new home theater set-ups with MP3 docks.

Like I said..i'm no help either. :D

I've thought about it but the problem is our PC is in the office upstairs and our entertainment system is downstairs. And we use our our laptops a lot both at work and at home. So we need a separate player we can dedicate for music. So for example, if we leave our laptops at work we want to be able to listen to music when we get home and have all our CDs available to us.

Also, although i have an MP3 player, I don't think it will be able to store over 300 CDs.

  1. You should be able to store 500 CD's worth of songs on a 30GB ipod and still have plenty of room to spare.
  2. They have a cable that plugs into your ipod headphone jack that connects to the back of your stereo receiver.
  3. Keep a copy of the songs on the PC as well.
If you need any help or questions. I have done some "stuff" with ipods ;)

That's about as much as the 500 CD changers are and ipods obviously take up less room. I might be investing on an ipod.

it's a good investment, you don't have to worry about any music being affected, say you scratch your CD, and besides the shell life of CDs aren't going to be as long as a file will

Well for what you want to do (store your music library) I would go on craigslist and buy someone's used 30gb or 60gb ipod. Probably get it for $100 or less. (people are constantly taking losses on their gadgets to get the latest and greatest) you could get a deal if you take the time to search.

You could buy newer which will go over $200 and you really dont need it.

You buy it seperately. I think I got it in a combo pack. Either way, you go into the store and tell them you want to connect to your receiver they will know. I think its a 2 color(red/white) or (yellow/white) that goes into one which is the one that goes into your earphone port on the ipod.

What you want to do is a piece of cake.

Actually, that should work and you should have enough room at 20gb.

I believe they are both 3.5mm earphone jacks.

It should work just as if it was the ipod in my example.

I know iPods and mp3s are convenient for storage and such, but I actually like CDs. I still buy them. I like to read the CD jacket to find out who is involved in the projects.

I gave my iPod to my baby sis. I bought a 2gb memory card for my phone, because it holds media files. If I want to listen to music, I just transfer music files from my 'puter to my phone.
