Let's go down the line...

Brice Butler - I think he'll be back on a 1 year deal. We'll probably lose Williams we cant go in to the season with only two experienced wide outs.

Gavin Esobar - A chance he could comeback on a 1 year deal, but I think he's done. Hasn't shown a enough to reduce Ego's snaps and not as good a player as Swain.

Lance Dunbar - He's been a waste of space for years now. I cant believe they brought him back last year. It's time they stopped being seduced by the tease!

D-Mac - A chance he could comeback. I would probably let him walk. "Yella Boy's on your team so your losing". I feel the same way about D-Mac. He has a career loser vibe to him.

Ron Leary - He'll probably walk. Wouldn't surprise me if the market for him is cold. According to Pro-football-reference his season AV was only a 4. Doug Free's was a 9.

Terrance Williams - For my money the best all around receiver on the team. I would bring him back but the team probably won't.

Mark Sanchez - He's probably a better QB coach than Wade Wilson, so why not

Kellen Moore - Who cares

Johnathan Cooper - Never heard of him

Brandon Carr - Got a feeling he'll be back. I would look to upgrade from him.

Morris Claiborne - I beg the team to let him walk. He can't stay healthy, don't be seduced by the tease.

Barry Church - Same as Carr

J.J Wilcox - They will probably let him walk. With Heath showing he isn't a liability(major) out there, is probably the end for Wilcox.

Jack Crawford - He may get another 1 year deal if we strike out in the free agent market

Terrell McClain - He's probably done. Didn't seem to play as well at the end. With Collins, Thorton(maybe), Irving and the draft, I think he's done.

Justin Durant - We need to upgrade that spot. He gave up the biggest play in the GB game.

Don't know who the last two guys are.

Players on NFI do not receive credit towards free agency.

Darren McFadden only played in the final 3 regular season games.

Players need to be on the roster for 6 games in order for the season to count towards free agency.

McFadden hurt himself at home doing something stupid and was unavailable to play football for most of the season.
It depends on what they were paid.

The CBA says full pay status qualifies a player to accrue a season. They gave McFadden his full pay according to reports.

This has been a discussion in regards to Jaylon Smith. I'm still not certain where they draw the line on full pay but it appears that Jaylon also received full pay.

I don't extend Dez and if I can avoid it I don't restructure Lee. Tron and Free restructures are a given.

You mean Tyron and Frederick, right?

Dallas doesn't have to restructure Dez Bryant or Sean Lee, but one or both may occur.

Tony Romo, Tyron and Fred will clear over $20M in cap space.

Extending Jason Witten could get another $4M and Tyrone Crawford might be restructured to create another $4.5M.

Dez could net $8M (existing 3 yrs on deal) to $9.6M (add 2 yrs to deal).

Lee could add 3.34M (existing 3 yrs on deal) to $4.4M (add 2 yrs to deal).

I resign Mcclain, Irving, Cooper, Mcfadden and Moore. I sign Claiborne to a similar 1 year deal as last year.

Dallas could've extended Terrell McClain last off-season, they do like him, and they chose instead to sign Cedric Thornton.

Both players will turn 29 before training camp.

I'd rather try to find a younger DT to bring in.

I'm not against keeping Mo' on one year deal, but another veteran might be needed due to his injury history before also looking for help in the draft.
I make one free agent splash. Eric Berry.

He will probably be re-signed by Kansas City prior to the start of free agency.
They will also be trying to do the same thing with NT Dontari Poe.

As long as they get at least one of them done, the franchise tag can be used on the other.

Nothing wrong with an occasional splash signing, but we might be more likely to spend mid-range money for a DE and CB.

- Bring back McClain

- Bring back one of Carr or Claiborne

- Bring back Wilcox

- Bring back McFadden as the #2

The rest I don't care about. Well maybe Butler as the 5th WR if he comes back cheap.

- Sign Tony Jefferson, SS from Arizona

- Sign Mario Addison, DE from Carolina

- Sign a vet LB for depth.

- Sign a vet WR like a Boldin or Patterson

Then work the draft like they have for the last few years. BPA but with a keen eye on defense and possibly a speed WR.

You'll be staring at that phone for quite a long time. You are not getting a #1 pick for Romo.

I can't get a 1st for a SB winning caliber QB? Please

Spare me the injury crap.. It's a risk a team will have to take.

I'm starting to hate trying to figure out the NFL CBA (go to page 146).

Section 3. Nonfootball Injury:
(a) A player who is placed on a Nonfootball Injury or Illness list (“N-F/I”) will not be entitled to any compensation under his contract while on such list but, except as provided below, his contract will continue to run while in such status.

(b) A player on N-F/I who is in the final year of his contract (including an option year) will have his contract tolled. However, if the player is physically able to perform his football services on or before the sixth regular season game, the club must pay the player his negotiated Paragraph 5 Salary (pro rata) for the balance of the season in order to toll such player’s contract. If such player is taken off N-F/I during the period when such action is allowed by League rules, his contract will not be tolled.

This is total BS.

Darren McFadden hurt himself at home during the off-season, was unable to play football as a result, and he gets to become a free agent anyway?

The team should be protected when the player is responsible for being unavailable.

No, you likely can't get a #1 pick for a 37 year old QB who hasn't played essentially in two years. You can try to throw out the injury stuff all you want but it's a key factor here.

Not to mention a 14 million base salary.

Restructure TSmith, Frederick, and Lee, extend Dez:

Cap space: Roughly 30mill.

Trade Romo for a third rounder and conditional in 2018-save 5mill.

What do you do?

Me:

RE-sign: Carr, Wilcox, Sanchez, Gachkar, T.McClain, McFadden, TWill, Irving, Dunbar, J.Crawford, Cooper

I like continuity, availability and appreciate role players which many of these guys are.

Total cap hit: approx 18-19mill

Sign:

Cordelle Patterson-I am not a huge fan of #13 myself. Too one dimensional for my liking and prone to fumbling, Patterson offers an upgrade as a returner and talented enough to develop as a WR still.

Andre Branch, DE-truth be told I would prefer Sheard, but something tells me he commands big bucks given his exposure with the Pats. Branch seems to be ascending and has very good ability.

Micah Hyde SS-Love his versatility and attitude. Good player, not sure if he will be overpaid but if not love for Cowboys to pick him up.

Draft:

Thought to say at this point:

Rd 1 targets-Taco Charlton, Solomon Thomas, Sidney Jones, Caleb Brantley

What does CowboysZone do with 30 mill in cap space and a low first rounder?

Trade Romo for a 3rd to the Jets..They need a face GM HC on the thin line this yr. Bowles was in Dallas 05-07 so he has some familiarity with Romo. They have offensive weapons and i think they will draft Fournette. Romo will do good there.

Resign: TW. Wilcox, Claiborne, Moore
Tender David Irving

FA signing
Sign Either of these two
Sheldon Richardson, give him a prove it contract. Where if hes on the field and out of the trouble the more he makes. LIke Hardy. Da;;as had interest in him but not the price NY wanted. Now they can get him without giving up anything. Just depends if he wants to earn it.

Kawaan Short, if you cant get Richardson go after Short. None of the headaches but a little less production. One of the best DT against the run tho.

DT is a much bigger need IMO then DE. Dallas has a nice young group of DEs once u add in a healthy Lawrene and Tapper to Irving and Mayowa. Dallas doesnt have a guy who can collapse the pocket and force the QB into DEs on a consistant basis. Dallas doesnt have that Warren Sapp player.

Yes why not? Two or three years, he will be 32-33.
You save a ton of dough.

Good god man.

Enough money, time and attention has been given to this guy.

Stop worrying about the future.

Let him help us win a super bowl before you think about giving him more money....but......saving $$ for the team.

Good god man.

There is no way Jerry and Stephen are giving away Romo for a 3rd. What, a 2nd round pick is too much to ask now?

As much as I like Romo, thinking we can get a 1st or 2nd for him is a pipe dream.......as with anything, something is only worth what someone is willing to pay........if you're an NFL G.M. do you give up a 1 for a player with Tony's injury history not knowing if he can last a season, a game or even a down?
