Resign our players like Church, Wilcox, maybe Williams and Claiborne if they don't command a ton, sign some solid players to fill holes(no big free agents). Spend the money wisely, in other words. You almost always overpay in free agency unless you're getting stopgap players

It would be shocking to get a 2nd. 3rd rounder tops we get for him

Id be elated if we could get that. Unfortunately I think teams don't want to take on his 14 mill contract and are willing to wait for him to hit free agency. We are already projected to be well over the cap and a 14 mill backup doesn't make sense.

I have had this argument in the past but I just don't get how so many people are overrating Romo's value.

37 years old that hasn't played in two seasons and the cowboys have zero leverage in negotiations.

Teams you negotiate with have all of the leverage because they know that if you don't close a deal, you can likely get him for free. If you start just shopping Romo to the highest bidder, one leak to the media that he is retiring and that's the end of that.

Everyone looks at the Bradford trade as proof but it's far from the same situation. If we hold Romo hostage until training camp and hope a playoff teams starting QB goes down, we might have a shot at decent compensation but we won't do that.

Regardless, I hope I'm wrong.

Unless someone tampers, they don't know that Romo will pick them over another team that wants his services. That's the leverage.

Yes......that long......his game isn't about speed and neither was Boldin

I think Dez will stay in DAL for the duration

Re-signing a few of our own free agents sounds right.

Darren McFadden is not a free agent.

Re-sign a QB, Jonathan Cooper if he's cheap, maybe Morris Claiborne for 1-2 years, either Barry Church or J.J. Wilcox, and let the rest go unless minimum deals will do.

Add 4-6 external free agents and plug up the remaining spots with draft picks.

Cap space is going to be an absolute non-issue.

Tony Romo's contract will be off the books.

Never say never.

It isn't sound business strategy to attempt "winning" NFL free agency every off-season with big money additions, but that doesn't prohibit the occasional splash signing.

Dallas' goal will be to re-sign their own deserving free agents and bring in new blood through the draft.

We don't need to go on a spending spree akin to the New York Giants of last off-season, but should be prepared to spend for DE and CB.

Why resign Claiborne he has never played a full season ?

The 14m is a bargain for a starting QB of Romo's quality.....the only question is health

What doesn't make sense is releasing him for nothing..... there would be a feeding frenzy for his services

That's true but there will only be 2-3 teams that will be in the market for Romo considering his health and contract. Not to mention, Jerry just won't send him somewhere he doesn't want to go.

We don't even know if teams like the Texans, Chiefs or Broncos would even want him considering the assets they already have tied up at the position .

Restructure TSmith, Frederick, and Lee, extend Dez:

Cap space: Roughly 30mill.

Trade Romo for a third rounder and conditional in 2018-save 5mill.

What do you do?

Me:

RE-sign: Carr, Wilcox, Sanchez, Gachkar, T.McClain, McFadden, TWill, Irving, Dunbar, J.Crawford, Cooper

I like continuity, availability and appreciate role players which many of these guys are.

Total cap hit: approx 18-19mill

Sign:

Cordelle Patterson-I am not a huge fan of #13 myself. Too one dimensional for my liking and prone to fumbling, Patterson offers an upgrade as a returner and talented enough to develop as a WR still.

Andre Branch, DE-truth be told I would prefer Sheard, but something tells me he commands big bucks given his exposure with the Pats. Branch seems to be ascending and has very good ability.

Micah Hyde SS-Love his versatility and attitude. Good player, not sure if he will be overpaid but if not love for Cowboys to pick him up.

Draft:

Thought to say at this point:

Rd 1 targets-Taco Charlton, Solomon Thomas, Sidney Jones, Caleb Brantley

What does CowboysZone do with 30 mill in cap space and a low first rounder?
I would love to bring Patterson here. Put him as punt/kick returner and I think he could take over as the number two receiver. He's too athletic to pass up on

From all accounts, Patterson is an idiot and still can't run a route tree or be bothered to know the playbook. I'd take Boldin before I took Patterson.

I really hope that's not true.

We should attempt to make a pairing where everyone is happy, but not at the expense of Dallas' future. Especially considering Romo made 24 million last year for some preseason and garbage time action.

CowboysZone DIEHARD Fan
I can't get a 1st for a SB winning caliber QB? Please

Spare me the injury crap.. It's a risk a team will have to take.

Brett Farve was traded for a conditional draft pick, that became a 3rd rounder, to the Jets after a 13-3 season the year before with Green Bay. He actually was a Super Bowl winning QB. He was 38 at the time of the trade, Romo will be 37. However, Farve wasn't coming off 2 back surgeries and played all 16 games for 13 straight years before the trade. So, while not impossible, it is not probable that he will net a 1st.

Yeah, that's about right irish. We should have enough leverage and market interest to generate a conditional 3rd rounder. I'd say KC or even Houston would bite on that. IF he hits certain numbers it goes to a 2nd or 1st. If not..it stays at a 3rd rounder. I realize that's different than Favre but KC and Houston are SO close IMO. He could put them over the top. Then again, Houston's Oline SUCKS. I think he could thrive in KC under Reid...I don't see why not. Same with Denver...Elway is blowing smoke IMO. He'd like to have him for another run or two IF the price is right.

If Jerry has seen these championship games then he better come to a conclusion that we need immediate FA impact, bargain shopping wont get us anywhere, just to win our division will be tough next year.
