There's one thing to say a general 'interest' but to specifically say Phil or LA Rams? When they don't at all, and SF can easily find out later you acted in bad faith...if you dont see why this undermines your credibility in the long run ...then i dont know what to tell you.

Its semantics whether they say general interest or just throw out a few names of teams that have also shown interest. GMs will tell teams whatever they think they need to in order to get something they want done.

Reality is I bet the Rams and Eagles would have probably called the Cowboys anyway to gauge interest in making a move, so technically Jones wouldn't be lying if he then told the 49ers that Philly and LA are ringing his phone too.

Yeah, I think so too on your second point. I personally wouldn't outright lie with mentioning a specific team that you say is competing with them for Goff, because they can find out that they werent & word can get out which might hurt your ability to make deals with other teams in the future (if you lied to X before outright, what makes you think you won't do so again). I'm sure Jerry has said some white lies in negotiation, but for the most part his reputation is that of a straight shooter

If, however, they also have a tangible interest in Goff, then it would be smart to play the 3 against each other to see who can get you the 'sweetest' deal

It might seem silly, but trustworthiness & reputation do matter. If people feel you are trustworthy (which I feel JJ is in his deals) they are more likely to be repeat trade partners down the road.

If you intentionally mislead them & they find out, not so much. And I'm sure the word will spread to other GMs

Yeah, you don't want to outright lie to them either though. This isn't a zero-sum proceeding; your reputation and credibility matters going forward. If, however, you do have interest from Philly and/or LA then its a very viable (and I would even say good) strategy. But you don't want to try to get a better deal for you in bad faith, because they can easily find out later, and while you might 'win' on this one trade, you hurt your credibility in the long run (which I think is very important and why JJ is a straight shooter in deals)

I was actually just kidding. I'm sure the 49ers could call the Eagles and Rams themselves and discuss what their options are.
That's why they have so many phones working on draft day. While you're on the phone with one team, someone else in your war room is on the phone with another.

As an aside, I never saw the movie "Draft Day" with Kevin Cosner. I plan to rent it before this year's draft day. Anyone seen it? Anyone have any reviews?

Yeah. I'm not sure Dallas would do it either. Maybe if they were at 4 and had 4 players all in the same tier, so moving down would basically be a free/riskless move. But I don't think they'd have 4 players grade all about the same on their board that early in the draft. That's something that happens fairly often much later, but not at 4.

In the last few weeks I've seen Bosa, Ramsey, Buckner and Jack mocked to us.

Hypothetical and likely scenario, Tunsil / Wentz go in the top 3 along with someone else, lets say Ramsey. If we moved from 4 to 7 and SF took Goff, only two other players would go before we picked at 7 guaranteeing at least 1 of the players I mentioned above (Bosa, Buckner, Jack) would still be on the board. The question would be does Dallas really have Bosa, Buckner and Jack in the same tier?

You also mentioned why would SF move to 4 if they think Goff will still be there at 7. It's possible since if Dallas doesn't really want him and Balt/Jax are set at QB. But the risk for SF is that not only is it possible Dallas could trade with someone else that wanted Goff, but so could Balt or Jax. Barring no trades then SF would most likely have Goff land in their lap, but if NO/Rams/etc wanted him they'd have a few teams possibly willing to listen ahead of SF.

Yeah, regardless of whether it's EE or not, the actual trade values are viable. And the trade doesn't have Dallas getting unrealistic value like some others do. Legit...in fact, Dallas might even squeeze and extra 6th or 7th out of SF in your scenario.
I do keep hearing that love Ramsey. So if he goes to SD at 3, they really might be on the phones at that point.

Just curious why SF would want to trade ahead of Baltimore and Jacksonville for Goff. I guess maybe if they thought another team was also trying to get into our spot or one of the others.

If the team doesn't want Goff @ 4 or pay the ante to move up to 1, I would hope they take Lynch @ 7 for the same reason. Then nab Jospeh with one of the 2nd rounders, and get the DL/LB/RB some help with remaining picks. But if they are sold on Wentz, go get him from 4 while it is "cheaper".:D Make a decision on the QB and go from there but Wentz has the tools, but admit the risk is there too. Sometimes you have to be bold in the right way.

Don't "settle" unless it is an insane one sided trade but trading up for your top QB is essential to secure Jerry World remains functional if Romo can't suit up in a few years (if we're lucky).
