Ian Rapoport is reporting the cowboys plan to play A LOT of 4 cornerback sets..maybe even as our base defense. The 4 CB set would still be in nickel packages, meaning, we'd only have 1 safety on the field.

Sounds like we are keeping Jenkins and it sounds like we plan to play him a lot.

4 cornerbacks as a base defense? Risen star may have a heart attack, lol

Jenkins is under contract he isn't getting anymore than what his final year salary calls for. Next year maybe a different story if the base 4 works

Sounds like we could be in for lots of corner blitzes too. If we do go blitz happy this year, I hope it results in lots of turnovers and defensive points.

As long as the defense can still contain the run, I'm all for it.

That's the problem when running that type of defense.

Its also probably why the Cowboys hold Anthony Spencer in such high regard since he's more of a run stopper than pass rusher.

This brings up a good discussion

Our nickel d would have a plethora of options..

The dline would be shifting players left and right.

Yea I know. It almost seems too good to be true lol. What would this do about the depth of the cornerspot though? How many do you take on the opening day roster? 5 or 6?

I don't mind him staying here. I think we should resign him to a modest, incentive laden deal.

And how do you think Jenkins would feel about that? Probably not what every 1st Round Draft pick is looking for in their 1st FA contract.

I agree but what i'm saying is fans for the most part feel Spencer at most is a solid rotation guy and at worst a "JAG". But if the Cowboys plan on using this 4 cornerback package as their base defense than he's more important to this team this year than he was last year. His role will even be important.

He's talking about Spencer.

You'd never use a dime D as the base. Teams would run over you all day.

Very likely means:
3 corner 1 safety base
4 corner 1 safety nickel

Yup. My bad.

However, the same applies for Spencer. This is HIS first FA market contract too. You only get FA's to sign "modest incentive laden deals" when they lack the leverage to get the big guaranteed bucks.

And the franchise tag suggests that Spencer indeed has some leverage.

The time to offer those modest incentive laden deals is when the player is not on the cusp of free agency. Ratliff's 2nd deal was a good example. Team takes a little risk, player gets the bird in the hand while conceding the two in the bush.

Probably had that opportunity with Free but the FO apparently needed to see a bit more. When Free played well, the price went up.

The window for a modest deal with Spencer & with Jenkins is probably closed I'm afraid.

Agreed. This is nonsense. It would be a wrinkle, nothing more.

We would get eaten alive....

2nd and long? Most 3rd downs? sure...

I agree but at the same time the only person that for the most part won't be out there would be Brodney Pool correct? You think this team is a Brodney Pool away from not getting "run over all day"?

I agree with what you're saying. I feel like its a little different situation for Jenkins being he's 26 and he's a year or two removed from making the Pro Bowl and for the most part we'd credit injuries as to why he hasn't made it back. With Spencer, I feel like his best interest is to stay for the Cowboys and we'd offer him market value.
