4 of our top 6 DBs will be UFA at years end. Who stays?

Claiborne, Wilcox, Church and Carr* will be UFA at the end of this year. That accounts for both of our starting outside corners and both of our passing down safeties (as Byron is flexed to man-to-man). That leaves a Flex-FS and two slot corners under contract for next season. I'm really curious about what will end up happening and would like additoinal takes.

Do we give Claiborne a relatively big deal or will he price himself out of town? Does he hold up for 16 games? Do we stick with Church or look for an upgrade?
Will Carr take what we're likely to offer, or look for one last semi-sizable multi-year contract elsewhere?
Will Wilcox's good play continue and would we trust him as a (likely) much cheaper replacement for Church at SS?
Starting CBs are getting EXPENSIVE - will we bite the bullet and look to FA? Will we grab one early in what looks to be deep CB draft class?

My hope is that Claiborne and Church take fair, team friendly deals. Wilcox and Carr move on. Then, we either draft a CB early or sign another starter in FA. I'd love to land a ball-hawk safety, but think we can make due without one, if things don't work out that way.

What are your thougsh?

*I'm pretty sure Carr is UFA. His salary details look odd to me and I could be mistaken. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Is that good or bad?

You got me. The unit is wildly exceeding my expectations this season, but I can't help but feel they'll eventually be exposed and come back down to earth. I'd say it's bad, in terms of the kind of contracts that CBs are getting on the market. We'll end up paying a lot more money than we are currently to replace Claiborne, Church, and maybe even Wilcox.

That's why we need to draft well. Don't be surprised to see a FA and a rookie manning the CB positions next year.

I wouldn't be opposed to bringing back Carr at a significantly reduced salary.

I actually don't think we keep Claiborne. Some team will break the bank for him in hopes he's turned the corner and I think that'd be a huge mistake.

Wilcox is gone.

I think we keep Church.

So, I guess I'm going to be a bit of a contrarian here and say that of those four, it'll be Church and Carr that'll be on the roster next season.

I think Church and Carr are back because they will be back at reasonable prices. Claiborne with his age and if he keeps playing like he is..... he may be too much for us to retain.

Extend Claiborne now for about 4 years. Seeing what CBs get, if you wait, he's gone.

I mean how are they wildly exceeding your expectations. They gave up 317 yards to Hoyer and 364 to Cousins. If we were sitting at 1-2, which we easily could be , we would be ruing the secondary

Agreed, hopefully church and carr come back on reasonable deals, vet CBs like car are just fine as a #2 CB.

Claiborne will be a tough call. I'd like to think he rewards the team that is giving him a chance, but his agent will not.

This was precisely a large part of the argument on why taking Ramsey would have been prudent.

Secondary is a premium paid position and this team will be trying to fill a bunch of holes next season. The contract Ramsey made him just the 44-46th highest paid DB in the game. Elliott's contract made him the 9-10th highest paid RB.

He is probably taking into consideration that we have the worst pass rush in the league.

No one can cover forever.

At the beginning of the season, I would say let all 4 walk.

Try to keep Claiborne. Rest can still walk. Sign/draft a real safety. No projects that just started playing safety their senior year at some small D-II university.

I totally get the concern. I'll say now that I'm not willing to give him anything in the Janoris Jenkins range (5/62). But I do have some fear that a team will be sign him and that he will infact have turned the corner. Claiborne's biggest issue has been learning how to play his game without getting flagged and hurting his confidence. (Well, that and staying healthy.) But I do think it's possible that he's ready to be a top 20 outside corner for the next 5 years. He might look like a bargan now, considering that if we do fix the pass rush, he could look that much better than he has.

It's a tough situation that I could see playing out either way. I'm really torn. It's hard to gamble on him, but he's young and the upside is there. That's worth something at the CB spot.

I think most recognize that the pass yards are mostly a result of the DL and not the secondary.

Hoyer's stats were garbage stats based on volume, with much of it coming against a semi-prevent. He threw it 50 times.

What they've done needs some context - as they've had one of the worst pass rushes in the leauge.

Maybe a bit against Chicago, but Cousins should have had 450 on us just with poor DB play on its own. We never have a ligitimate pash rush since Demarcus left, why is this year any different?

I think the only difference this year is TOP.

For all of Carr's detractors, the guy has never missed a game here. Not one.

The best ability is availability.

This pass rush is much, much worse than anything we've had before. Sure, it's never been good, but it's never been this bad either. Our best pass rusher has been David Irving. While he has promise, that's a very bad thing.
