they've invested highly into the secondary through the draft and taken a very minimalistic approach to the defensive line

it's time to reverse that philosophy

I will wait until the end of the season to be concerned on this, if at all.

I was thinking about last night. Claiborne might price himself out of Dallas.

Claiborne. Church, possibly, as a backup.

Carr, Wilcox.......... see ya.

Claiborne will get injured before the year is done, which will drop his price.

Carr back at a significantly reduced rate.
Claiborne back on a 1 year prove it deal again at a higher rate then he is currently getting.
Church I am not sure, think he will be 29, would not mind if it is 2-3 year deal.

Not sure I agree. They signed Crawford (2nd round pick) to a huge deal, Thornton was our biggest FA last year, they brought in Hardy, Lawrence was a very high 2nd round pick that they traded up for, Gregory was a 2nd round pick, Collins was a 3rd round pick. I think they've invested enough to have a quality group, their investments just haven't panned out to this point.

I do agree that we need to keep addressing the DL until we get it right, but think the secondary needs to be invested in as well.

I think Claiborne would need to miss half the year with something pretty big to consider another 1 year deal, personally. Teams will certainly see the youth and upside there and be willing to gamble on that, given the market for starting CBs. I just don't see him being willing to make that big of a gamble two years in a row.

My initial reaction is to resign Claiborne. My only concern is will his play drop off again after he gets paid?

In the end, all of these guys would look a lot better if they had a pass rush helping them out. That's where the primary focus should be next year.

Sadly, we'll have to focus on the secondary just to field a unit.

Claiborne, Wilcox, Church and Carr* will be UFA at the end of this year. That accounts for both of our starting outside corners and both of our passing down safeties (as Byron is flexed to man-to-man). That leaves a Flex-FS and two slot corners under contract for next season. I'm really curious about what will end up happening and would like additoinal takes.

Do we give Claiborne a relatively big deal or will he price himself out of town? Does he hold up for 16 games? Do we stick with Church or look for an upgrade?
Will Carr take what we're likely to offer, or look for one last semi-sizable multi-year contract elsewhere?
Will Wilcox's good play continue and would we trust him as a (likely) much cheaper replacement for Church at SS?
Starting CBs are getting EXPENSIVE - will we bite the bullet and look to FA? Will we grab one early in what looks to be deep CB draft class?

My hope is that Claiborne and Church take fair, team friendly deals. Wilcox and Carr move on. Then, we either draft a CB early or sign another starter in FA. I'd love to land a ball-hawk safety, but think we can make due without one, if things don't work out that way.

What are your thougsh?

*I'm pretty sure Carr is UFA. His salary details look odd to me and I could be mistaken. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Am I missing something here? Will Wilcoxs' good play continue? Has going from horrible play to below average play somehow elevated him to worthy of keeping around?

Good for him. It's relative, of course. I'm not suggesting he'll do anything that makes him look like a legit long term option. But as a one year bridge on a small contract - I could see it. Not saying it's likely, but I could see it, assuming he continues to look like an average safety, even.

Could be, but if he misses 4 or 5 games again this year with his history it's going drop term/price on what teams will offer.

If he goes 16 games at this level of play, they Boys are going to have a decision to make.

Church Wilcox and Carr aren't top 4 in anything. Maybe missed tackles.

Contract year for the 4. Maybe that is why they are exceeding expectations. Or, the expectations were so low based on previous years. Carr was forced to take a pay cut or get cut. Claiborne couldn't even got a FA visit. No way I would even think about a long term contract for any of them.

I'd rather roll with 2016 draft picks Frazier and Brown. Maybe those 4 (Carr, Claiborne, Wilcox, Church) will do well and move on and we get comp picks.

In with the new and out with the old for the defense next year. Just like the offense this year, those new players are doing well.

I don't care if any of them stay. Claiborne's been solid, but to contemplate giving him a big deal, to me, would be insane.

What I care about is getting front 7 talent. That will make whoever's in the secondary a lot better.

Extend Claiborne now for about 4 years. Seeing what CBs get, if you wait, he's gone.
With his injury history, they had better sign him to a play for pay type of deal.
