Turnover differential is the most disconcerting stat. The Cowboys' propensity to turnover the ball is a trend that, if it continues, will most likely prevent them from making the playoffs.
Doesn't help when the defense has not shown an ability to get key turnovers themselves. We need this defense to make more plays.

If we just limit our TOs and cut out the penalties, the performance we have from our own defense would be sufficiant. We would be 5 and 0 right now.

I'd love to blame it on coaching, but they did the same thing under Parcels, so--

Being sufficient shouldn't be what a defense full of 1st round draft pick strives towards.

5-0 and the best team in the league would be.

I'm starting to wonder when was the last time that Dallas had a defense that scared anyone.I know you had Doomsday back in the 70's and the unit from the early 90's was pretty good.I know they had the number one unit here a few years back but that was due to playing on a short field with an inept offense at best.Last years "sack champions" didn't force many interceptions with the pressure that was generated. This years version resembles a rubber band because of the way they bounce of opposing players or snap at critical moments.

Penalties are killing us, pure and simple. Players are coached not to commit penalties, but it seems like there is little accountability in the Cowboys organization. We keep playing the same guys who are making the same mistakes over and over because we don't really have much choice. Lack of any quality depth is hurting us.

So my question is, what do we do? Do we bench the habitual offenders and maybe lose more games than we otherwise would or try to play with a bunch of stupid players hoping physical talent will overcome stupidity?

If we fix the penalty issues and take care of the ball we are as good or better than any team out there in my opinion.

Shocking.. Been this way for a while now. Stupid players = stupid mistakes. You are right, if they can fix penalties and turnovers we got a good shot...they have not been able to fix them for a long time, don't know why they would be able to now. Im not holding my breath.

It’s not just penalties...its costly penalties. We get a huge play of 23 yards...but holding brings it back. Those type of calls will kill you. We have been doing this for years, i see no reason why it would change now.

We have a defense that doesn’t create many turnovers. I mean against the worst offense in the league and nada? The Cowboys basically need an INT thrown right into their gut (Newman).

I will go back to the coaching staff. Give these DBs some extra time with the jugs machine...work an extra drill focused on stripping the ball. This defense hasn’t had someone who could generate turnovers since the old Roy Willy.

The 90’s Cowboys was awesome at that.

I rarely chime in in agreement on a *****-thread, but the TO/penalty problem from last year hasn't been solved. And just like last year, it can be overcome against mediocre teams, and kills us against the good teams. If we don't fix the TO ratio, we're not going anywhere this year.

If I were Wade the 1st Pre-Snap penalty that any player on the team did I would take them out for a series in a game.

It would be huge in getting this teams attention because you are willing to do it in a game. It would also get the media off of his back.

Just 1 series.

Yes. This is something I'd mentioned in a thread about Flozell and getting Doug Free ready. Mental errors and concentration lapses shouldn't be tolerated, and our running game is good enough that we can limit the offense a bit if our blindside pass-protector is on the bench for a series. It doesn't need to apply to everyone, necessarily. There are a handful of players making mistakes that are hurting us.

Confusion in the secondary is another area where I'd like to see players subbed. It's riskier, but Allan Ball's a good player; I don't mind him or Watkins going in when a starter blows a coverage.

:hammer: It's the same story though.

We were 13-3 in 2007 because we were +5 in turnovers.

Our defense needs to create turnovers. Plain and simple. If we do that, we'll win ball games and be able to overcome our mental mistakes.

If we end up +5 this year we will make the Conference Championship game.

I really like that idea. Plus I like the idea of Flo getting a breather and getting Free some reps.

That is a really good idea. That would get their attention.

As far as the turnovers I think we tried to address this in the draft by focusing on players in the secondary who had really good ball instincts. Players like Mike Hamlin, Deangelo Smith and Mike Mickens who all had lots of ints. Unfortunately, only one of them made the 53 man roster and he is just coming back from injury.

Thats why I feel so encouraged about Mike Jenkins. He easily has the best instincts of anyone in the secondary. Newman a good cover corner but his ball instincts are very poor imo. Same with Hamlin, his instincts are below average hence the reason why we have problems with ints.

Actually we were 13-3 because Romo had a 3-1 TD to INT ratio. plus 5 is crappy.

Romo actually hasn't been half bad at controlling turnovers save for the Giants game. Our issue is not getting any on defense.

That and penalties have consistently had almost zero correlation to winning and losing in the NFL, whereas turnover differential consistently has a strong correlation to winning and losing in the NFL.

The big problem we have, probably bigger than Romo's inconsistencies and regression (to whatever degree he has regressed) is the safety play. We have had ONE pick from ALL OF OUR SAFETIES in the LAST 27 GAMES. This should be downright alarming to somebody in the organization and the local media, yet I'm the only one that researched this and brought it up.

Approximately 75% of the league's turnovers come from the QB position, be it a strip fumble or an interception. If you can't get your safties to make interceptions, you're going to lose the turnover battle more often than not.
