because Juarez is basically the most dangerous city on the planet.

Not even close.

If you note, "non-war zone" cities, it is in consideration with several other cities like Bogata and San Pedro Sula.

By war zone, I mean were there is active war / uprising violence or military type service (more than just local PD) actively patrol a city to keep the peace. (ie, Bagdad, Mogadishu, Grozny, Lebanon, etc)

Well technically it is the second most dangerous in terms of violent crime but the most dangerous (San Pedro Sula in Honduras) is a product of a massive prison which is incredibly easy to escape from. Juarez has the second highest murder rate in the world and the highest drug-related violent crime rate in the world (and by a wide margin).

Bingo, you can't logically count war zones. EVEN THEN, San Perdo Sula and Juarez are comparable in terms of violent deaths per capita.

Meh, I've spent a good amount of time there and never felt unsafe. The police and border patrol really overcompensate because Juarez is basically the most dangerous city on the planet.

I talk to people who live there and work here every day. They would know.

I live in Las cruces and that is TOTAL BS about El Paso being that safe.
A LOT never gets reported.

That's the same for every major city, a few years ago El Paso was rated the 2nd safest city in the US i really only have that to go by i haven't been there in years my self so i have obviously no first hand experience, but compared to what's across that border it really night and day.

I'm not concerned with the spillover in El Paso as much as the major cities in Texas like Houston, Dallas and San Antonio. Much of the cartel use these cities as hubs not El Paso

Unless you have mexico levels of corruption in the police force the chances of them gaining control of any US cities the way they control Juarez and Monterrey are 0.

I don't expect them to have the same control. As for the corruption of the police. Let me say when the Cartel goes after your family, wife and kids, mother and father it becomes hard from many of the police not to take money and look the other way. The cartel does not play around and they will not go after just the individual they go after those you care about. This is why you see so many of the police in the drug task force cover their faces but even at that once the information gets out you can't protect those you care about. These cartels are nothing like your avg street criminals

North Mexico is one of the most dangerous regions in the world and no matter what they try that will probably never change. As long as the demand for drugs in the US is so high they'll always be fighting over the border crossings once the drugs are inn there's really not much point in fighting over it anymore.

I wouldn't worry to much about it spilling over Juarez is the single worst place in the whole world it seems, right across the border El Paso is one of the safest cities in the US.

Mexico isn't that bad once you get away from the north i spent 2 months there earlier this year including 5 weeks in Mexico city and i never felt unsafe apart from the time i accidentally ended up in Tepito

El Paso is not all that safe anymore. Even with Bliss, DEA, ICE, Customs/Boarder Patrol, it's not very safe. Seriously.

I've lived in Texas my entire life, and I've NEVER been to Mexico. I don't really plan on it either.

I've been a couple of times and don't plan on going back.

I've been to Cancun and Cozumel. Cancun had the nicer hotels, but the place just sucks. Cozumel's hotels aren't that great, but the awesome snorkeling makes it easily worth it.

My issue is [strike]this[/strike] these:
  1. Hotels are way to close together and they are high towers. You lay on the beach and the hotel next door blocks out your sun if you are out there and it's past noon / 1pm.
  2. The downtown area is dirty and the people that work there (especially at the Hard Rock) just plain suck and don't care.
  3. Too many people begging you to buy crap or trying to scam you the second you step foot out of the hotel. (I heard it happens in some hotels too, but our Hotel didn't allow it or those idiot time-share / cigar / art sellers do business in our hotel, or the little chicklet gum selling kids)

I know there was something else, but I can't think of it now. In Cozumel, our hotel was aged, but the service was really good. We drove around the island and we had a good time doing that. Cozumel I would go back to just for the snorkeling.

dude when your drinking when the sun comes up until it goes down those are minor things. :laugh2:

Add to that this trip was just myself and a good buddy of mine. We spent a lot of time riding motor scooters, heading down to the marina to charter boats for fishing, snorkeling away from the tour guilds and just having fun.

Now you add a wife for girlfriend into the mix Yeah I could see where it would not be a fun vacation. :laugh2:

To me it is like camping when it is just me and my buddies we always have a fun time only when we add women into the mix do all those inconvenient annoy us because it annoys them.
:laugh2:

Cancun is no different than going to Miami Beach... it's so Americanized with American chain restaurants and MTV-like atmosphere...

Playa del Carmen is quickly getting commercialized, but is much better... try Puerto Morelos... still has the charm of Old Mexico and the reef is still pristine there...

Not really comparable as this is like saying that Berlin was the most dangerous city in the world in 1945.

It's not like saying that at all.
