Matt Stafford is the concensus best quarterback available in the draft. But despite his throwing for 3,500 yards and 25 touchdowns last year, the conspicuously quarterback-deficient San Francisco 49ers have declared him unworthy of their first-round pick. A team psychologist has found Stafford not-sufficiently willing to discuss his parents divorce in a draft combine psychological evaluation session, and coach Mike Singletary has decided Stafford lacks the mental stability to be a San Francisco 49er.
Who is Mike Singletary to call other people crazy? At least Stafford didn't drop his pants.

That's ridiculous. I wouldn't want to talk about that crap to some stranger either.

This sounds like a smoke screen, or just plain propaganda to justify why they passed on this kid if he were available years on down the road. It could also be to make him slide. Who would intentionally tell their adversaries that they have taken him off their draft board? If you didn't want a player you wouldn't be badmouthing that player, as you would hope someone above you would take him letting a player you want drop to you.

I could see that he might fail a psychological test, but I don't see how his parent's divorce in any way relates to his ability to be an NFL QB. If he failed the test, I highly doubt the nail in his coffin was his parents' divorce.

I hope you don't take this the wrong way but you do not fail a psychological test. As far as him not wanted to discuss his parent's divorce, it depends on how old he was when he it happened. The psych should have asked if he received any counseling for it or if felt like he needed it. Your right, it has nothing do with his ability to perform as it did not at Georgia.

I realize it is not high school, but if the test eliminated him from their draft board, could that not be considered "failing" the test? :D

That's comical. Most say Stafford has his head screwed on very well. I'm not sure I'd use the top pick on him, but at #10, I think the risk-reward is in line. He won't be there at 10 anyway, so this is a mute point.

Just dis-information, that time of year/ move on....

I teach at UGA. I see Stafford around campus and know other teachers who have had him.

I'm telling you -- HUGE BUST!

The guy is not very smart, despite his wonderlic which I can't believe. Also, he just has this look of deer caught in the headlights. You know how you look at people and can just tell that there are no lights on? he's got that

I don't know about the pysch exam, but I can see teams determining he doesn't have IT.

He lost most big games at UGA, except the FLA ambush which was more of a team thing.

He is VERY inaccurate. VERY. He overthrows a lot and receivers always have to dive for the ball.

And, he just seems like a mental goofball to me.

I am calling it now--BUST!

It has nothing to do with his performance? Actually he'd be answering a ton of tough questions from sportswriters, etc. and you don't want a guy who is going to flip out like Ryan Leaf under that sort of pressure.

Frankly, if someone can't talk reasonably about their life experiences in the most important series of interviews in their life then they have a problem.

Hmm... You don't call yourselves "Professors" at UGA? Teachers work in high schools.

Good. They are stupid. Perhaps, they will not draft Lawrence Sidbury Jr.

Hey, Singletary.

Take Larry English.

He'll talk to you about anything.

For every pass he 'overthrew',he probably had three dropped!I'm glad your not in the war room for the Cowboys, what with your football expertise.

I think that term nailed it, metal goofball. He has the arrogance in a bad way like J.P. Losman and an odd quirky attitude in a manic standoff way, dare I say it, like Ryan Leaf.

I just keep coming up with a similar conclusion, there is something wrong with him. During the combine they tried talking to him, but he was still too busy entertaining himself by goofing, yes again, with Sanchez before he "realized" he needed to be on National TV, just odd.

One of my best friends is a professor at JMU, and he refers to himself as a teacher...and a professor. FWIW.

I think Det will take him so it is a mute point what the 9ers say about Stafford

you'd be hard pressed to find more than a handful of folks who prefer the title "teacher" because it does not accurately reflect the job. Professors may teach 3-12 hours a week but most - especially at a big research school like UGA -- are involved more deeply in their own research and writing. FWIW.

So I'm questioning the previous poster b/c his use of a title that most profs wouldn't use to describe his colleagues at UGA seems inconsistent.

No, a professor is a Dr. I am a graduate student, about to finish my PhD. So, I am a teacher, not a professor.

His passes were dropped a lot because he is so inaccurate. I am telling you, he is not going to be a good NFL QB.
