5 Things I'd Like To See Improve As the Season Goes On

Somebody on this team has to be better at returns than Thompson. An average returner should get you to around the 25 every time he fields a kick off.

It was nice having Keith Davis back. A couple of times on returns it looked like a hole had opened up for the returner, but Davis showed up and took care of business.

all good points but i would not start barber regularly, just against teams like NE who have alot of firepower & where we wouldn't wear them down anyways.

the FG really has me annoyed and disappointed at this coaching staff. utterly and totally pathetic.

Many find a silver lining in the fact we are missing some players to injury. That is fine, but remember this, the Patriots were missing Richard Seymour and Lawrence Maroney as well. Great teams overcome injuries. To this point in the season we have been a great team because we have done that.

Newsflash, we are still a great team. We just got beat by a better team. There is no shame in that. We have room to improve. No doubt about it. Here are some things I'd like to see going forward from here.

1. No more Tyson Thompson as the primary Kick Returner.
Yes, he had one good return last night that almost put us back in the game. He also pinned us inside the 20 yard line against a great defense on every single other kickoff that he received. The guy uses bad judgment constantly. After he gets the ball he jogs leisurely out to meet the coverage where he hopes he can make the first guy miss and then accelerate. This would be a great plan if it had ever worked in NFL history. The best Kick Returners hit high gear immediately and then worry about making a guy miss. Not sure Thompson can make anyone miss anyway, he simply has no wiggle.

2. On 3rd down this defense needs to come harder not try to cover closer. Just my opinion mind you, but if you give an NFL QB more than 4 seconds to throw a football they are generally going to kill you. You give that kind of time to a Brett Favre, Peyton Manning, or Tom Brady and they will kill you in a most heinous manner. We have got to send the dogs in waves. I expected to see a more aggressive pass rush, and while I do see improvement over previous years, I still don't see near enough aggression. How long has it been since we batted a pass down? I swear, Too Tall Jones seemed to bat at least one down per game. "Yeah Hos, but he was 6'9" tall." Last time I check Hatcher and Canty weren't exactly short. new England has a great OL, not a good one, a great one. But we still could have pressured Brady more than we did.

3. We have got to either wrap up on tackles, hang on until someone else can come bail the tackler out, or start hitting guys so hard that they play timid. I personally would prefer if we'd simply tackle better. Guys bite on the first move every time. What the hell is up with that? I don't care if it means playing closer. I don't care if it means be more physical. But for the love of all that is holy bring the guy with the ball down. They teach you this in Junior High. Watch his torso, not his head and drive to the torso. Now, wrap up and drag down. I also could do without ever again seeing us throw a ball carrier forward. yeah the tackle still gets made but you're giving them yardage. Always push backwards. Wrap up and push backwards.

4. Can we play Marion Barber at Safety too, or at the very least start him at RB? Julius Jones is running great, but this team has scored 6 points in the 1st quarter for the season. That simply is not acceptable. You're telling me that an offense with this kind of firepower cannot script plays to score in the 1st quarter? You want to offer me some swamp land for sale too? I'm not buying it. The obvious answer to me is to inject some attitude into the offense and right now, no one on the Dallas Cowboys plays with more attitude than Marion the Barberian. Let's use him to light the fires under this offense. Either that or like I said, play him at CB or Safety and let him knock the crap out of someone. Give me 53 guys who play as hard as this guy does and forget who the opponent is, we won't lose. Julius Jones is playing well. Marion Barber is inspiring and igniting the offense. Why not inject his enthusiasm into the picture immediately? This team starts to score once he is part of the game plan. Do the math.

5. No more being Conservative by the coaches. Every time this season that we have gone for it, we have had positive results. When we were down by 14 yesterday and went for 3 on the Patriots 5 yard line it simply let all the wind out of our sails. The team folded after that. Wade Phillips might as well have waved a white flag. What he told the team at that point was that he didn't think we could punch the Patriots in the mouth, but we could still manufacture 2 more scoring drives in the final 10 minutes against this team that we couldn't punch in the mouth. I guarantee you the Patriots were relieved when we lined up for that Field Goal attempt. It gave them new life. They saw the defeat in our eyes and they mashed the pedal down. Tony Romo talked the coaches into going for it last week and it paid off huge. Listen to the Gunslinger and let's go for it. Even if we don't make it, pinning the patriots 95 yards from the endzone has to be better than kicking off to them and letting them start at the 30.

I wonder how many drives we've scored TDs on with Barber as the primary as opposed to Julius. In my head, it seems a significant discrepancy. Get them both in the game, but the order may need reversed.

That's basically what he did, and it showed. Honestly, I think he was just trying to get the Cowboys to cover. ;)

Trust me, I started.

Then I got to the Giants game, where started Julius on some drives, and finished them with Barber. I didn't know where to put the check mark, so I quit.

Mmmmmm.....I love the smell of dedication in the morning.

So what do the Cowboys do now when all teams they play just spread them out and pass on almost every down?

Obviously all teams don't have moss, stallworth, and welker. But they don't need to have those guys when Greg Ellis is covering the slot.

I'd like to improve on the midgame adjustments and communication in the secondary. Hopefully, those things will come with more games played.

You just said it these other teams are not the Pats so I don't think is going to be a consistent problem. We have faced others who also would use spread formations with no success. So I don't think the Pats showed other teams how to defeat us unless the Pats are going to rent out players.

I agree with you on Tyson. I mean how many times are we starting at the 20 or under? We need to be around the 30, 35 at least. I wish we would put Austin back there for a few tries.

As close as I can get, there are 9 TD drives with Barber as the primary, and 7 with Julius. I didn't count some drives, like ones within two minutes where we passed the whole time. I needed to see a good 3-4 carries on the drive to count it.

After the first two games, it was at 5 for Julius and 3 for Barber, I think. Since then, it has been 2 for Julius and 6 for Barber.

Bottom line is the Pats pretty much drove up and down the field all game.

Hos, and I agree with the conservative side of things. Defensively and offensively both of our respective teams; need to put their foot on the gas on offense, and foot down their throats defensively.

Why Witten and Cooley arent leading the NFL in receptions right now, is beyond me.

Good post Hos and I couldnt agree more.

The only thing I would add is the stupid penalties we seem to come up with that wind up shooting ourselves in the foot. A trend that still seems to be ongoing even after the Tuna.

I truly beleive this team had a chance to win yesterday. We were moving the ball and starting to score. Romo was starting to get into a groove. Then bam the penalties came, drive killers at that. I lost count how many times we gave New England a first down from being offsides.

We have a good team there is no doubt in my mind. They could be a great team if they could just stay focused in big games of this caliber.

It's the first thing that popped into my head when it happened. We lost our chance to win the game - I came to that conclusion immediately. But, with the field goal, we still had a chance to cover the spread. I was like....ok. :)

But then.....:bang2:

Kojak, the penalties are killing us. We are the most penalized team in the league. Imagine this offense without some of the stupid penalties. A couple of weeks ago someone counted all the yards Julius had stripped by penalties for a game and it was 56 yards. Just Julius Jones.

I don't know what it is about the yellow laundry and our team this year but there seems to be a magnet. The worst part is, you know the officials prepare for games too. So if they see a pre-disposition by a team to commit penalties, they are going to be watching for it.

I could be completely wrong about this, and if I am someone can correct me. I do not remember the team of the early 90's as drawing a lot of penalties. It seems to me that they just didn't kill themselves with penalties.

Up until yesterday it had not been an issue. Against a superior team like that, it is a death sentence.

There are several things to take away from the game that are positive. The defense scored. Always a positive. The defense harrassed Tom Brady and no other team has. Also a positive. We were the first team this year to be ahead of the Patriots in the 2nd half of any game. A positive.

In my mind 2 things absolutely killed any chance we had yesterday. Tops is 3rd down Defense, and right behind it is penalties.

We've been drawing penalties like this since the campo era. The sad thing is two fold - 1, those were generally offensive line penalties and defensive pass interference calls. We seldom get called for PI anymore. 2. The only offensive lineman left from that time is Flo, and his only penalty was a hold, not a false start.

I don't know why our offense has so many penalties, especially on the OL, but it needs to stop. We've seen them fore more than half a decade, and it's getting absurd.

i would like to see marion barber in the red zone, exclusively.

seems like last year, the team was guaranteed to score with MB3. now they sputter.

thought for sure they'd just run MB3 behind gurode and davis this season, but it hasn't been used much. actually, i see davis pulling quite a bit, maybe because teams don't even bother lining someone in front of him?

Sputter?

Only one team is scoring more than us.

Am I missing something?
