Sorry, the Cowboys were "born" in 1960. They turned one in 1961, although 1960 was their first season. They turned ten in 1970, although 1969 was their tenth season of play.DWhite Fan;2854593 said:When calculating how many season an NFL team has played, you must remember that they turn one in the same year they begin play. A person born in 1959 would turn 1 in 1960 and be 10 in 1969. Same for the Cowboys. They were one in 1960 and 10 in 1969.
I always think of the Cowboys as being born in 1959. It is easier
In terms of what the Cowboys will celebrate, it will be their 50th season. You go ahead and celebrate their "anniversary" next year if you want to. The old AFL teams are also celebrating their 50th seasons this year aswell.fgoodwin;2854616 said:Sorry, the Cowboys were "born" in 1960. They turned one in 1961, although 1960 was their first season. So, they turn 50 in 2010, although 2009 is their 50th season of play.
I'd be happy to celebrate the 50th season, but apparently Jerry isn't preparing to celebrate anything this year, other than opening the new stadium.DWhite Fan;2854618 said:In terms of what the Cowboys will celebrate, it will be their 50th season. fgoodwin;2854615 said:FWIW: 1984 was the Cowboys "Silver Season" not "Silver Anniversary". 2009 will be the Cowboys' "Golden Season", not "Golden Anniversary".
Look at it this way: if you got married in 1960, you would've celebrated your first anniversary in 1961, not 1960. You would've celebrated your tenth anniversary in 1970, not 1969. 1969 would've started your tenth year of marriage, but you wouldn't celebrate your tenth anniversary until 1970.
Same with the Cowboys -- 2009 is their Golden (50th) Season, but 2010 is their Golden (50th) Anniversary. The fact that some call it "50th anniversary season" is just sloppy usage, nothing more.

Hint: Football teams begin to play at 0 years old, not 1 year old.

50. 2009 (Gasp! Can it be? Is it so?)
You can spin it any way you want to and make a big deal about the semantics of a word. It doesn't matter if that word is season or anniversary. The original question was about commemorating 50 years. Anyone who thinks we are doing that in 2010 instead of 2009 is not paying attention.fgoodwin;2854615 said:FWIW: 1984 was the Cowboys "Silver Season" not "Silver Anniversary". 2009 will be the Cowboys' "Golden Season", not "Golden Anniversary".

Hostile, don't get all riled up. I'm not spinning anything, and I'm not suggesting that celebrations be delayed until 2010.Hostile;2854708 said:You can spin it any way you want to and make a big deal about the semantics of a word. It's just a username. If I disagree with someone it doesn't mean I am riled up.fgoodwin;2856161 said:Hostile, don't get all riled up. I'm not spinning anything, and I'm not suggesting that celebrations be delayed until 2010.
I agree that 2009 is the Cowboys' 50th season. But other than a uniform patch, I don't see Jerry and the Cowboys doing much celebrating. He's focused on opening a new stadium. The 2009 catalog doesn't mention 50 seasons, I see no special t-shirt or hat, or events planned, etc.
So where exactly is the celebration we are all debating?
I hope you're right -- maybe Jerry will say something at today's "State of the Cowboys" address.Hostile;2856165 said:Merely pointing out there will be announcements of commemorative patches and other ceremonies. To think there won't be is a bit silly.

Those are the three we lost.
