When calculating how many season an NFL team has played, you must remember that they turn one in the same year they begin play. A person born in 1959 would turn 1 in 1960 and be 10 in 1969. Same for the Cowboys. They were one in 1960 and 10 in 1969.
I always think of the Cowboys as being born in 1959. It is easier :)

FWIW: 1984 was the Cowboys "Silver Season" not "Silver Anniversary". 2009 will be the Cowboys' "Golden Season", not "Golden Anniversary".

Look at it this way: if you got married in 1960, you would've celebrated your first anniversary in 1961, not 1960. You would've celebrated your tenth anniversary in 1970, not 1969. 1969 would've started your tenth year of marriage, but you wouldn't celebrate your tenth anniversary until 1970.

Same with the Cowboys -- 2009 is their Golden (50th) Season, but 2010 is their Golden (50th) Anniversary. The fact that some call it "50th anniversary season" is just sloppy usage, nothing more.

Sorry, the Cowboys were "born" in 1960. They turned one in 1961, although 1960 was their first season. They turned ten in 1970, although 1969 was their tenth season of play.

So, they turn 50 in 2010, although 2009 is their 50th season of play.

In terms of what the Cowboys will celebrate, it will be their 50th season. You go ahead and celebrate their "anniversary" next year if you want to. The old AFL teams are also celebrating their 50th seasons this year aswell.

Another way to look at it:

Your 50th birthday is actually the 51st time you've been alive for that particular date.

Similarly, the Cowboys won't turn 50 until 2010, but 2009 marks the beginning of their 50th year of existence.

I'd be happy to celebrate the 50th season, but apparently Jerry isn't preparing to celebrate anything this year, other than opening the new stadium.

YES!!!! Thank god!

To be fair the original post ask two separate questions mixing them as one but I answered, "is this their 50th ANNIVERSARY" (the opening question).

Wow. Let's try this another way. I can't believe I even need to do this actually.

Hint: Football teams begin to play at 0 years old, not 1 year old.

1. 1960
2. 1961
3. 1962
4. 1963
5. 1964
6. 1965
7. 1966
8. 1967
9. 1968
10. 1969 (Exactly as I claimed, not 9 as you somehow derive.)
11. 1970
12. 1971
13. 1972
14. 1973
15. 1974
16. 1975
17. 1976
18. 1977
19. 1978
20. 1979 (Exactly as I claimed again.)
21. 1980
22. 1981
23. 1982
24. 1983
25. 1984 (Silver Anniversary exactly when I said it happened.)
26. 1985
27. 1986
28. 1987
29. 1988 (Landry coached how many years? 29. Coincidence? I think not.)
30. 1989 (Seems to be a theme here.)
31. 1990
32. 1991
33. 1992
34. 1993
35. 1994
36. 1995
37. 1996
38. 1997
39. 1998
40. 1999 (Things that make you go hmmmmm.)
41. 2000
42. 2001
43. 2002
44. 2003
45. 2004
46. 2005
47. 2006
48. 2007
49. 2008
50. 2009 (Gasp! Can it be? Is it so?)

Are you reacting without reading my response? Why all the snarky responses??- I agree this will begin 50 seasons. The anniversary will be in 2010. End of story. sheesh...

Let's have a beer and get the season started.

You can spin it any way you want to and make a big deal about the semantics of a word. It doesn't matter if that word is season or anniversary. The original question was about commemorating 50 years. Anyone who thinks we are doing that in 2010 instead of 2009 is not paying attention.

Hostile, don't get all riled up. I'm not spinning anything, and I'm not suggesting that celebrations be delayed until 2010.

I agree that 2009 is the Cowboys' 50th season. But other than a uniform patch, I don't see Jerry and the Cowboys doing much celebrating. He's focused on opening a new stadium. The 2009 catalog doesn't mention 50 seasons, I see no special t-shirt or hat, or events planned, etc.

So where exactly is the celebration we are all debating?

It's just a username. If I disagree with someone it doesn't mean I am riled up.

Merely pointing out there will be announcements of commemorative patches and other ceremonies. To think there won't be is a bit silly.

I hope you're right -- maybe Jerry will say something at today's "State of the Cowboys" address.

I didn't see Jerry's press conference, but according to JJT's summary, no mention was made of the 50th season.

I went to the Kick-Off celebration, and there was lots about training camp (obviously), and a little bit about the new stadium, but absolutely zero mention of the 50th season.

So we still don't know when (or even if) Jerry plans to announce anything special re: the Cowboys' 50th season.

One thing worries me about going to Miami for the Super Bowl. We have been 3 times. Super Bowl V, X, & XIII.

Those are the three we lost.

Well that just means it's another wall we should climb this year then. :)
