How many punt returners got hurt last year returning punts? How many in the last 5 years?

I absolutely loathe the idea that you don't play players in areas they excel at because they may get hurt. Its football, not badminton.

Agree completely.

Even more so now that we may have actual depth at CB.

When you have a top CB and you stupidly risk him on a punt return to get a few extra yard then you are an idiot. LIke I tried to point out- you should weigh what you might gain by what you might lose. Losing Tnew on a punt return injury is dumb when you consider how valuable he is to our pass D.

And this BS about it being football is just that.

Maybe we shouldn't let him drive either, he might get in a car accident.

Seriously, this isn't about "a few yards." Newman was a top returner in college (guess they were stupid too) and could literally change the field position game and even break away for several TDs a season if he was used extensively.

Its certainly better than Fair Catch Crayton, and the risk is not nearly as bad as you are making it out to be. Punt returners really don't get hurt all that more often than anyone else.

But Parcells didn't let him do it... :p:

I'm all for Newman doing it, and have been all along. Decamillis said during the draft that Wade told him he wanted to use TN there more this year with our increased depth at CB, so let's just hope that happens. Really, punt returning isn't nearly as dangerous as kickoff returning.

Or, who knows, maybe Deangelo Smith will be the guy. He looks pretty good at it. But he still doesn't have that true breakaway speed.

I have no problem with Newman returning punts just as I had no problem with Sanders returning them when he was in Dallas. If someone shows they are a better then put them back there.

As Jimmy Johnson once said there are 3 phases to this game offense, defense and special teams if you win 2 out of those 3 then the odds of winning increase.

I think some people do not look at special teams as that big of a deal but to me bad special teams will get you beat because you are either giving up long returns to the opponent or putting yourself deep in a hole because of poor returns.

some other notes on practice today;
Bennett looked pretty good in practice today, the last 2 days too. Mae a one handed catch again, that drew oohs and ahhs from crowd.

Felix like choice seems to be bent on a mission, shown hard running, absorbing hits and plowing through arm tackles easy

pat mcquistan just had 2 false starts, really ticked jason garrett off, he is sitting on the sidelines now.

From Archer's report --

"Pat McQuistan drove Marcus Dixon 5 yards off the line on a run. During the run drills, McQuistan looked pretty good to the untrained eye."
