7/30th morning practice, Newman gets drilled

Maybe we shouldn't let him drive either, he might get in a car accident.

Seriously, this isn't about "a few yards." Newman was a top returner in college (guess they were stupid too) and could literally change the field position game and even break away for several TDs a season if he was used extensively.

Its certainly better than Fair Catch Crayton, and the risk is not nearly as bad as you are making it out to be. Punt returners really don't get hurt all that more often than anyone else.

if Newman showed anything in the NFL as a punt returner, I wouldn't have issue with it

but he's a middling returner

edit: oh, he busted a 50 odd yarder a couple of years ago

I absolutely loathe the idea that you don't play players in areas they excel at because they may get hurt. Its football, not badminton.

Agree completely.

Even more so now that we may have actual depth at CB.

Makes three of us.

When you have a top CB and you stupidly risk him on a punt return to get a few extra yard then you are an idiot. LIke I tried to point out- you should weigh what you might gain by what you might lose. Losing Tnew on a punt return injury is dumb when you consider how valuable he is to our pass D.

And this BS about it being football is just that.

Name me 1 PR that got hurt last year returning punts. Big PR are a huge momentum shift and Newman is good enough that he can take it to the house a couple times a year.

Next you will be saying Felix shouldn't return kicks or heck why not just use Newman on nickel because he might get hurt the other downs.

Looks like you beat me to it. I seriously cannot remember a single PR seriously injured on a PR. Its obviously happened I just cannot recall one.

This is football.

deon anderson just pancaked marcus spears, woohoo,

choice just broke through line of scrimmage for a huge run, then he howled after the big run

think these two guys are trying to send a signal that one wants to ensure he makes the squad and the other that he doesn't sit on the bench all year?

I'll take both of these things as major positives...

More like get Newman off the punt team

This is the solution. We drafted return men. Scandrick needs to get in there and pull some weight. Our top corner does not need to return punts. Rather have Jenkins or Scandrick doing it than Newman. Ideally they don't touch that stuff either.

I seem to remember a punt return on which Newman got absolutely pasted.

Happened a few years ago ... maybe when Parcells was still head coach.

Anybody remember the details?

yep he got nailed, i remember that game was woozy for awhile

From where I was sitting, it was Newmans fault. He ran into the defender, it looked like #27, although I've read it was Anderson. They were trying to slow down and avoid him, it seemed, and Newman ran samck into him.

McQuistn was running second team RT and third team RG.

That was Newman's fault. The punt was to the sideline and he tracked it but never signaled fair catch. Once he got close to the sideline he eased up assuming (I guess) since he was going out of bounds he wouldn't be hit so he relaxed and was nailed. He did catch it inbounds though.

:hammer:

The guy is already injury prone, why the hell do you line him up on special teams where the biggest hits happen.

+1

Emergency use only.

While we are at it let's wrap him in bubble wrap, lol.

I am against having him taken off of ST. He is a threat if there is a crease and unfortunately football consist of tackling.

First camp cupcake, now kamp killa. :)

I dont know about seriously, but I recall our own backup punter pretty much turning someone's lights out last year on a hit.

I dont mind Newman returning them occasionly, when the other team is backed up in there own territory for example. Lets not confuse him with Deion either though.
