Randle looked good, I was surprised how often Dunbar was out there and used. DMC was DMC, his bigger version of Dunbar at this point in his carrier. Randle had some nice runs, I also feel the play calling was a bit conservative, very dink and dunk because they were playing our receivers the same way we played theirs, allow the short stuff prevent the big play.

I'm sure they would have run more if they hadn't kept turning the ball over for touchdowns and had to play catch up...

I think our backs are very Jagish running the ball, outside of maybe McFadden.

If I was Garrett I would dress Michael instead of Randle next week

with all due respect. We have to pass the ball to do that; It works. But at what cost?

you tell me what cost…

Those passes to the backs are all very quick developing plays. The ball is out of Romos hand very quickly, and it is barely more than an extended handoff. While it's not a true running play, it serves the same purpose, and has the same effect.

Think about it in these terms – our running backs average better than 6 yards per touch tonight.

We did almost exactly what I thought we'd do with the RBs tonight. I'd have been happier if there were more holes for Randle, but it's not like he left a lot of yards on the field.

I like putting the backs in and then spreading out the defense. And I like the quick screens to the TEs in those situations. We can do a lot with those personnel groups.

Tonight's game, the turnovers put us in a really tough spot as far as the running game was concerned. Had we held onto the ball better, those drives would have had more runs and ended in more points and I don't think anybody's complaining about carries at that point. Tough to look good running it when your WRs are coughing the ball up left and right and you're playing with urgency the last two or three possessions.

I find all the McFadden love and Randle hate a little strange. Maybe it's people seeing what they want to see, maybe it's that McFadden looks the part, maybe it's that McFadden's first run went for 8 yards. After that, though, he rushed for 3, 3, 3, 1, and -2, finishing 6 for 16. Randle had the fumble and didn't light the world on fire, but at least he averaged 4 yards per carry and had zero negative runs. Plus the three catches for 42 yards.

Look at our first TD drive.
Two Randle rushes put us in 3rd and 1, which he converted by catching a pass for 25.
Then he caught another one for 11 yards and another first.
Then he ran for 5 on first down.
Then, after we converted that one, he ran for 5 on the NEXT first down.

I'll admit my bias against McFadden. He's never stayed healthy and has been extremely unproductive the last three years (albeit behind a poor line). But I see a lot of people here saying how good he looked running. Me, I'll be impressed when there's actually production there.

Excellent observation.

In my opinion, McFadden looked like he was shot out of a cannon on that first run, then looked tentative every time he carried the ball afterwards.

Randle didn't have the same burst McFadden showed on that first run, but as you said, he had no negative runs. More than that, it seemed like he was always pushing the pile, gaining an extra 1-2 yards after first contact.

And now the facts........

In his 53 games as a Cowboy DeMarco Murray averaged 17.6 carries and 3.2 receptions for an average of 20.8 touches a game.

Joseph Randle had 16 carries and 3 receptions for 19 total touches.

In 39.6% of his games, Murray averaged less than the 4.06 yards per carry that Joseph Randle averaged in this game.

DeMarco Murray averaged 108.4 yards per game when you combined rushing and receiving yards.

Joseph Randle had a combined 107 yards.

DeMarco Murray averaged 5.2 yards a touch during his time as a Cowboy.

In this game, Joseph Randle averaged 5.6 yards a touch.

Meanwhile, McFadden had a total of 7 touches for 35 yards, 5 Yards a touch.

In all, a third of Romo's passes went to RB's. The RB's had the ball in 35 of the Cowboy's 68 total offensive plays, that's 51.5% of the time.

I realize this isn't the traditional concept of a balanced offense, unless you are the New Orleans Saints. However, it was Randle's first start, McFadden's first game as a Cowboy and Dunbar came within 2 yards of surpassing his career high 82 yards in a game. The only time he gained more was some garbage time against the Raiders.

In total, put this RB trio down for 35 touches for 222 yards from scrimmage, an overall average of 6.3 yards a touch.

Put the rest of the offense down for 214 yards on 33 plays (including incompletions), an average of 6.4 yards a touch

Going to be tough to improve the running game the next few weeks with Dez out having to face a lot of 8 men in the box trying to stop the run. Romo attempted 45 passes which was more than he attempted in any game last season. He took some hits tonight and appeared to be a little shaken up on a couple of them.

It's going to be a rough season if he has to carry the team like he did tonight. Without Dez and Murray this isn't going to be the same team we saw last season. Fortunately Dez will be back but who knows where the Cowboys will be when he does.

The concept behind RB's and a successful running game was to control the clock, thus giving more rest to your defense so they can play harder when called upon.

Did the Cowboys fail to dominate the time of possession?

In 2014 the Cowboys averaged 32.8 minutes time of possession, or 26.5% more time than their opponent.

In this game, the Cowboys had the ball for 37.2 minutes...........62.4% longer than their opponent.

I wanted to make it easier for readers to match up the comparisons. I realize that numbers can get tedious.

so the RBBC got "35 touches for 222 yards from scrimmage, an overall average of 6.3 yards"

interesting point.

can we maintain the success we are seeing with these sort of slot receiver RB plays to spread defenses?
